"RK" Madhubala walked into their room quietly, her hands fidgeting with her duppatta, her eyelashes lowered and refusing to meet the gaze of RK.
"Haan Biwi?" RK was buttoning his shirt in front of the dressing table and didn't even bother looking at her while answering.
Madhubala opened her mouth to say something, a word, perhaps two but the words just hung to her lips, refusing to make a sound, refusing to form a clear sentence, a clear indication as to what was going to come next. Nope. Her words just hung on to her lips, refusing to cooperate.
Madhubala turned lowered her eyelashes to the ground, looking for a way out. She didn't want to tell him but he had to know. It was complicated. But in fact, their relationship had always been complicated, never normal.
After not hearing a sound come out from his Biwi's mouth, RK turned around to finally face her. Concern was evident on his face but at the same time, he tried to play cool. Yes, he had professed his love for her and yes she made me weak, but she was also his strength. And plus, he was The Superstar RK. And he didn't fall weak, run after a girl like a crazy dog like nothing. Girls ran after him but Madhubala was different. Madhubala matched his every step, his every attitude, his every move. Madhubala was different because she was HIS.
"Biwi, do you want to say something to me?"
"Huh?" Madhubala looked up to face RK as if she had just awakened from a trance. She looked lost, vulnerable, unprotected and RK hated seeing her like this.
"Biwi, do you have something to say to me? Because you better hurry up as I am leaving soon for my shoot."
"I…I just wanted to know if you needed help with anything?"
"Biwi, I am not a little kid and neither am I on my death bed, and neither am I sick or hurt to need your help. And as you can see, I am already dressed for work and I didn't need your help."
Madhubala nodded her head and looked around the room as if searching for something. And RK noticed her every move. "Biwi. What's wrong? Just tell me."
"What? Nothing's wrong. Why would anything be wrong?" Madhubala replied back, putting a fake smile on her face.
"Do I look stupid to you?" RK asked Madhubala, sarcastically.
"Well…since you asked…" Madhubala continued on.
"BIWI!"
"Sorry!"
"So tell me. What is bothering you?"
"Like I said, nothing is bothering me! I just came to see if you needed any help to you know, dress up and all."
"And like I said, you are lying."
"I am not lying!"
"Biwi, your hands are all fidgety and you aren't able to look me in the eye. So unless you are Superman, tell me what's wrong."
"Nothing is wrong."
Before Madhubala could react, RK grabbed Madhubala's waist and pulled her towards him so that their noses touched and their mouths were barely apart from each other. Madhubala's hands went up till RK's chest, and moved up his shoulders to hold him closer to her despite her instincts telling her to push him away since it wasn't the right time for this. Right now, she had to tell him the truth.
Tell him the truth.
About her.
About him.
About them.
He had to know. He had to know the truth. Madhubala pushed at RK's chest. "RK, let me go." Madhubala struggled in RK's tight grip on her waist but all her efforts went in vain. He was as strong as anything she ever imagined.
"Madhubala, what's wrong?"
Madhubala closed her eyes and let out a sigh. Here goes nothing. She had to tell him the truth as much as she didn't want to. Because she knew he wouldn't remember. Because she knew that he would just shrug it off like a nightmare. Because she knew that he wasn't ready.
"I'm pregnant."
