There is a wealth of meaning behind the word 'Biwi'. But to RK, it was nothing but a term that symbolises his authority and his ownership of Madhu. It had nothing to do with care, concern, love, affection, respect, integrity, or the numerous meaning and feelings associated with the word. For him, his Biwi, was nothing, but the ninth servant of his mansion. For him, 'Biwi' was someone who is always at his beck and call. For him 'Biwi' was just another spot. For him, 'Biwi' was someone he owns. For him, 'Biwi' was someone on whose very breadth he has authority. For him, 'Biwi' was just someone who files his nails. For him, 'Biwi' was someone to taunt to his heart's delight.
To the same man, today his 'Biwi' is someone for whom he will accept unjust accusations to preserve her respect in her father. For whom, he will forgive the man who tried to kill him, not once but three times. For her happiness, he takes her to her home in the middle of the night. For her, he is willing to forget what her father has done. To her, he has given the right to look after him. To her, he has given the right to feed him. To her, he has given the right to talk back to him. What has changed? Everything. For today her tears move him. He doesnt mind Death, but for the effect it has on his Biwi. For her, he wants to live. For her, he has let down his guard. For her to enter, he has opened the doors to his heart. Its not his pain that makes him unhappy, but her sadness. Its not his happiness that makes him smile, but the smile on her face.
The old is gone and everything is new. Including their relationship. It has a new meaning now. He belongs to her. Just like she belongs to him. She has authority over him. Just like he has authority over her.
