First of all...I am fron the U.S....and have been here all my life. I do have those "values" u speak of..respect and so forth..at the same time...I'm western in the way I dress. I pretty much married a FOB from India....why? I feel in love when I visited there. Anyways...upon him moving to the U.S....I dealt with the same issues mahi & shabd are going through except in this case.....my husband wanted me to dress "traditional." From my prespective......the way I dress expresses how I want to project myself to the world...and how I feel about myself...my identity as a peson. It is a HUGE deal...and no..it's NOT some stupid fight. It had a huge impact on our marriage ...to the point of divorce. Yes, I am divorced now. I couldn't change myself. At one point....I tried to make him happy...but I could never be happy pretending to be something I am not. It's not fair for Mahi to change nor is it fair for Shabd to give up his dream. I'm not sure what the producer has in mind for the couple...but in real life...having been through it myself and seeing a lot of relationship suffer from "lifestyle" issues...it always ends ugly. There is no middle point often time. I like mahi and shabd together...but my personal opinion is...they would be better off apart b.c they already have a distinct lifestyle set and compromising will just belittle there relationship....in the end...there will be nothing but pain and resentment if they stay together. "clothes" really encompasses a whole "lifestyle" ...not just the way u dress. U can be traditional and western...majority of Indian Americans are both.
