I don't think Mahi gets more importance in this serial. Both are central characters. Each track is different and some concern Soni while others concern Mahi.
I started watching Maayka in Dec 2007 and at that time the Soni-Jeet-Cherry track had just started. Mahi was staying at the Gurudwara and some days there were fewer scenes of Mahi than Soni - which led me to believe that Soni was the main lead. But things changed after a few weeks.
Anyways I love both Soni and Mahi. And I watch Maayka because of the storyline which has been quite interesting.
