How has it been so far? Fantastic. I started with theatre five years ago and graduated to television. I would have loved to stick to theatre but it's too much work and one gets paid peanuts. Where and how did you start? I went to Ohio University to study. That's where I dabbled in theatre. When I re- turned, I continued to do theatre. Four years later, I got my break on television with MTV's Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi. Why did you do a blink and miss part in Parineeta? Pradeep Sarkar saw me in one of the episodes of the MTV show and thought I looked like Saif Ali Khan. I was ap- proached. I said yes because I thought it was a huge compliment to be compared to Saif Ali Khan! I didn't mind doing that blink and miss part. See, you remember it.. I'm sure others do too. So did that get you more film offers? Yeah, I was approached for playing the hero's brother, heroine's friend, the works. But I declined because I didn't want to fall into that trap. How did you land Love Story? The lead actor (Mishal Raheja) is my friend. He told me that Anurag Basu was auditioning for his new show. I decided to give it a try. He took one look at me, asked me to grow a beard and meet him after a week. I did. A week later, after an audition, I'd bagged the role of Bhatti. What's it like working on TV? It's maddening but a lot of fun. I've been working for nearly 15-18 hours a day and 25 days a month since it's a daily . Didn't Balaji Telefilms approach you for anoth- er role after Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi? They did but I was busy with other things. You know, when you're on one show, you're flooded with offers. But the minute you're off it, everybody forgets you and you're left with no work. What's happening to theatre now? After working for long hours every day, I don't find the time to even think about theatre. Plus it needs three months for rehearsals.. it's a one take thing unlike TV. What has the feedback to your character been like, so far? Quite funny, actually I often get calls offer- . ing me work in a typical Punjabi set-up. I politely convince them that I'm not a sar- dar in real life. Love Story reportedly has a definite life-span. What happens after that? When we started out with the show, it did have a definite start, middle and end but if the channel wants and the producers agree, it may get extended. What about your social life? What social life? Sometimes, I don't even get two days off in a month. I'm unable to meet and spend time with my family. I don't regret this but yeah, I do miss them. Is there a special someone in your life? Nope, there is no woman in my life. Actu- ally, there is.. my mother. What's next for you? More television.. theatre for sure and of course, films are my ultimate goal. rachana.dubey@hindustantimes.com

Payal Sarkar stepping into Tollywood
By MIO Team
Jul 19, 2007, 12:09

COOL PAYAL

Payal Sarkar is one of those aspiring actresses from North hoping to make her career in films in Tollywood. She will debut with the comic flick 'FM' to be made by Hyderabad Nawabs. Payal Sarkar already had her brush with acting when she played the lead in the Bengali version of the Telugu film, 'Nuvvuosthanante Nenoddantana'. 'FM' will be directed by Shekhar Surya and produced by Rama Krishna. "The film is a rib tickling tale of a painter, who moves to Hyderabad to make it big. It's a riot of laughter from the word go," says RK. We hope Payal makes her mark from her first film itself!

Shruti is a young girl. She lives in a very conservative part of Delhi and so her upbringing is quite conservative. Her family is connected with the local goondas and the local dons of the area. She goes to Hindu College and is very happy until she meets Akash. She falls in love with him but he does not seem to reciprocate her feelings. Dev falls in love with Shruti but she loves only Akash. On Dev's birthday Akash admits that he too loves Shruti. And they become a couple. Dev is very upset, he thought that Shruti loved him. The songs from the serial are already a rage with many. The title song is scored by CACTUS and the band has also contributed many other songs that feature in the serial such as the title track 'Meri Har Chahat Hai Tu', 'Teri Yaadein'and 'Ranjishe sahiin',Yun chal pade rahi safar', & the latest one is 'Kaise kahu tujhse rubaroo'..which is well known by 'Deewana' track and all the tracks are really awesome i think these people should take out an album of all these songs.

The song Teri Yaadein was originaly sung by a Pakistani band IMIK in 2005. It was included in their first album Zamana Badlay Ga. The song was titled as Piya.

The show's screenplay is done by the talented young writer Mukul Srivastava, who also wrote FAME X , Left Right Left and FOUR for the same channel.

Rupa joins Ekta camp

The actress has joined Balaji's daily soap Karam Apna Apna…

Ranjib Mazumder

Rupa Ganguly, who is still remembered for her role as Draupadi in Mahabharata, is back as Suguna in Karam Apna Apna. Rupa is excited about her comeback. She says, "It feels nice to be back on national television. I am playing Suguna, Ipshita's mother, in the serial. It is one of the significant characters, who will bring in the much-required twist in the tale. I had been getting calls and mails from Balaji over the last four years, with offers. This time, their offer had been lucrative enough… The schedule will give me a scope to divide my time between my hometown Kolkata and Mumbai."

But, why Balaji? "Frankly, I did not get many calls from other production houses. I found the Balaji people professional enough to work with. Besides, I liked my role in the show."

Reportedly, Karam... is not getting good TRPs. To this she says, "Being an artiste, I only care for my character and nothing else. I am not bothered about TRPs."

So, what kept her away from national television for such a long period? Rupa says, "Actually my son Aakash was very young and I could not leave him alone. Now that he has grown up and we have admitted him to a boarding school, I have ample time to devote to my creative pursuits."

How does she like living in Mumbai? "I have stayed in Mumbai for an extensive period of time when I was doing Mahabharata. Although I have a flat at Lokhandwala, I prefer to stay in Kolkata, closer to my family and friends."

Now that Rupa is in Mumbai for some time, will it affect her film assignments in Kolkata? Rupa says, "After Ritupo*no Ghosh's Antarmahal, I did a few other Bengali movies. I had been a little busy with my family too. I know, Mahabharata gave me recognition; but I wanted to explore many other things as an artiste and therefore left Mumbai."

What about Anurag Basu's new show, Love Story? Says Rupa, "I have already started shooting for the serial. It has two parallel love tracks with an intriguing storyline. It'll be aired soon after the cricket World Cup is over. Right now, I want to concentrate on these two shows and I don't think I have enough time for any other project. As for my film assignments are concerned, I will always take time out for directors like Rituparno Ghosh and Gautam Ghosh."

Rupa to play mother again

Tellywood's newfound mom, Rupa Ganguly will be playing the protagonist's mother in Balaji's upcoming show Kasturi

Kavita Shyam

Rupa Ganguly has been roped in by Balaji for yet another venture, Kasturi. The Bengali actress made a comeback of sorts on Hindi television with Karam Apna Apna recently and will now play Kasturi's mother in Balaji's new show.

Apparently Rupa was also offered a meaty role in Kayamath too, but she had to refuse due to time constraints.

So how different is her character in Kasturi from that in Karam Apna Apna? "In Kasturi, I will be playing a typical bahu with middle-class values. She is the most-loved woman in the house, who prefers to keep quiet most of the time. She brings up her child Kasturi, who eventually wants to go against the family, for her higher studies and I, as a mother support her completely. This role is completely different from that in Karam Apna Apna, where the character I play is more independent," points out Rupa, who will soon begin shooting for the show.

Though Rupa gets along well with all the actors on the sets, she is particularly very fond of Achint Kaur on the sets of Karam Apna Apna. She adds, "I am friendly with all the actors on the sets. I also do not hesitate to go and start a conversation with anyone."

While the actress spends 25 days a month in Mumbai, she likes to be in Kolkata for the rest of the days. But is she planning to shift her base permanently to Mumbai in the near future? "I like to be in Mumbai but my hometown will always be Kolkata. I go back to Kolkata and come to work in Mumbai. Now there's immense scope for any actresses here, compared to what it was 15 years back when we were only expected to run around the trees," asserts the actress.

Rupa is grateful to Balaji and Ekta for getting her back to Hindi television and offering her meaty roles in many of their projects. "Balaji is treating me very well and there is no reason to for me to say no to their projects. I am thankful to them for tracing me back and convincing me for the roles. Ekta is an intelligent girl who knows her job well," says Rupa. Rupa will also be doing Anurag Basu's Love Story where she will be playing an independent, headstrong woman who is separated from her husband.

Harsh Chaya's Hollywood Calling!

Harsh Chaya's Hollywood Calling!
By Our Correspondent 2007 Bollyvista.com

Harsh Chaya
News is that Harsh Chhaya was apparently asked to act in Anjolina Jolie starrer 'A Mighty Heart' for which she had recently been to India. But we learn Harsh didn't seem too interested and had put down the offer.

When contacted, this is what the man had to say, "I'd rather do some good work for our Indian industry here than do a measly role in an English movie with a top star."

Quiet a modest fellow, especially considering that he didn't talk about it for so long!!

Caught between two worlds

Post marriage, Abhishek Bachchan isn't being his usual friendly self towards female co-stars according to the grapevine. Poor Priyanka Chopra, whom he fondly called "Piggy Chops", was at the receiving end of his surprisingly cold behaviour during the shoot. Apparently ever since he has got married, AB junior is keeping most of his heroines at arms' length. This sudden change in behaviour is being blamed on Ash, who, sources say, likes to keep her hubby only to herself and his male buddies. Let's see what a few

married and unmarried celeb guys have to say if they are to choose between friendship and conjugal bliss.

***

Mishal Raheja (actor)

I expect my wife to be sensible and to trust me. If she points fingers at my female friends, I will find out the reason behind it, as she won't be objecting just for the heck of it. I can't just cut off ties from trustworthy old friends. I will explain to her that I will be within my limits. I will give her examples of other married guys who have female friends and tell her "you too may have friends whom I don't like, but I am not asking you to destroy your friendship with them". Thus I will strike a balance between marital harmony and friendship.

***

Vivan Bathena (TV actor)

At first I will try to make my wife understand that I have known my friends for a longer time than I have known her. So, I will try to work things out by encouraging my female friends and my wife-to-be to meet up so that they get along well. But despite all my efforts, if she is not happy with my friends, I will slowly back out from them because ultimately, the comfort of my spouse, with whom I will be spending all my life, is more important than friends who may come and go.

***

Ignatius Camilo (model)

First of all, I won't be dating such a girl. After spending time with her for years, I would get to know her nature properly. I will drop her if she becomes possessive and suspicious. However, if my wife suspects my friendship with another girl, I will clarify my position once and then expect her to understand. If she still persists and objects to my mixing with my female friends, I will ask her to carry on with her own life as her possessiveness will affect our future too.

***

Nikhil Mehra (fashion designer)

First of all, guys shouldn't make a wrong choice by marrying such a possessive girl. In case you have, prioritise who is more important. You can always meet new people and new friends. But if you want to keep up the friendship with old friends, then reason out with your wife. I will first ask her the reasons for her objection and depending on how logical her answer is, I will take the decision.

As told to SULOGNA MEHTA

Ajay Chaudhary should be rewarded for his loyalty towards his show Love Story. Though he plays the second lead in it, he turned down the offer to play the central character in an upcoming Balaji show. Two weeks ago, he was asked to come and meet Ekta Kapoor as she was interested in casting him, but he declined the offer as he was hard pressed for time. "My commitment to Love Story is 25 days a month. It's difficult to say no to Ekta but I expressed my inability to act in one more daily and she was very understanding. But I told Ekta that I am open to work with Balaji and may be after six months something will work out," he says.

When asked what is so special about Love Story that he wants to continue acting in it, even though he is not the lead, he says, "It's a lovely show and I really enjoy doing it."

Talking about his role in the passionate and violent love story that is set in a college campus Ajay says, "Dev is like any other college boy. But he has style, looks and great communication skills. His friends are his life and he is madly in love with Shruti who comes from a well-connected political family. There are lots of twists and turns in the story."

The irony of the situation is that before he landed a role in Love Story, Ajay auditioned three times for Balaji, but didn't get any work. It was only after they saw his work on his debut show that Ekta Kapoor and her creative heads were impressed with the young actor's looks and acting skills.

Till something with Ekta works out, Ajay is content with Love Story and he is also busy shooting for the title track of a ghazal album by Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali and Abida Parveen in Delhi. Movies he says are not yet on his agenda

'Men and women have become equally adept at surfing the Internet, but a recent survey shows how they make different use of the same technology'.

Mars and Venus both have access to the technology of the millennium — Internet. Men and women have become equally adept at surfing the Internet, but a recent survey shows how they make different use of the same technology.

As per the report: "Online life mirrors off-line life very closely. Men are more action-oriented and women are more communication- oriented."

Budding actor Mishal Raheja says, "I surf for the latest models of cars and gadgets. I also read news on the net."

Sarod players Aman and Ayan Ali Khan have also set up their own website. "I enjoy looking up for interesting messages people put on our site. I enjoy looking up for sports cars and aircraft.

I also surf for holiday spots across the world and chat with my friends," says Aman Ali Khan.

Mishal Raheja turned a year older on 18th August. In real he is totally opposite to his character Aakash in Love Story who talks less and delivers punches more. Catch this special chit-chat with a very lively, fun-loving person.
What is on the cards for this birthday?

Mishal: It will be the first time in my life that I will be working on my birthday and I am really excited and looking forward for it. Actually it's a good omen as on my birthday last year I gave my auditions for Love Story and Anurag Basu has personally called me. So, I think it's a lucky day.

Has your crew members planned something special for you?
Mishal: We all are planning to go to some place and fortunately the shooting is close to my house. So, I will be taking everyone home for dinner. Then probably we will go to Envy in Kolaba for a couple of drinks. I am not throwing any party, so anyone can come to wish me. I will be more than happy.

Tell us about your character-Aakash in Lovestory?
Mishal: Aakash is very introvert as he does not talk much. He is a very reserved cat. The reason behind this is his childhood trauma of his father leaving his mother and him. Like any other child he wanted his father to be around him and at a same time blamed his mother for his father going away. He loves his two friends Dev and Bhatti and can give his life for them. Mostly my character speaks through eyes then through the words. And then his life changes as he fell in love with the girl SHruti from his college. The problem starts in his life from then as Shruti's family is politically connected and from underworld. Her brother is also from the same college and there are lot of fighting scenes, cop chase and high voltage drama.
The latest storyline is that Shruti's brother is killed and the cops blamed us and we are shooting a cop chase right now. Overall Aakash is a big fighter. More than words he throws punches.

You have been a part of the MTV show Pyar Vyar and all that and have done a couple of ads…and now to the main role in the TV serial..how has this been?
Mishal: I started off with Pyar Vyar which was also a main lead. The journey has been good. Pyar Vyar was a short serial with 40 odd episodes. I was very new then and was learning a lot. I am little more confident now than I was till the last year. I think I am still at a first stage of acting and have a long way to go as my ultimate aim is Bollywood. I had got lot of offers in this past one year but I didn't choose to take up any as I was not interested. However, this serial is very interesting, action packed, cop chases, fight sequence. And ofcourse Anurag Basu which was a plus point. I learnt a lot. So, I just took my step forward and here I am.

How does it feel like working with a director like Anurag Basu who has given bollywood some unconventional hits?
Mishal: It is like a dream come true. The first major project directed by Anurag Basu is any fresher's dream. I was extremely nervous but he is a very cool guy. He is a very jovial guy keeps everyone around him comfortable. Even our 2nd director, Swapnaneel Jaykar, who is directing the show right now, is also very good.

How is it on the sets of Love Story, with your co-actors?
Mishal: We are crazy bunch of mad people and all of us keep laughing all the time. Only when the director says 'Action' we are serious. Otherwise, we are bunch of mad people. If you will come on the sets we will drag you mad, that's my promise. Whenever, any new artist joins in we let him/her observe the things around for 2 days and it's the same craziness.

Any funny or embarrassing moment on the sets of Love story?
Mishal:
Embarrassing moment on the sets of love story I wish I would have any. I like embarrassing moment because it is funny to narrate to people. Oh yeah, I remember there is one funny episode though. It was a hostel scene and Shruti has to close her eyes and sob while I was sitting next to her. It was the last shot of the evening and in 5 minutes we all left her alone and went. Her eyes were shut and she could not see what was happening. When she opened her eyes she started yelling as she was sobbing and no one was around then. That was really funny.

Has acting been on the cards since childhood or was it something unexpected?
Mishal:
I had always dreamt about acting and had a passion for it but was not getting any right opportunity to work towards it. I was studying in America then worked there for a while. I came back to Mumbai for a break and got a call from Ramgopal Verma's assistant. He was directing Darna Mana Hai. One of my friends was in the crew and they called me for an audition. But that project never took off but I didn't want to move back after then. I started doing theatre with Nadeer Babbar and at a same time went for auditions. There I got lucky with MTV show and then there was no looking back.

Any message for all your fans at India-Forums who is celebrating your birthday in full spirit?
Mishal:
I visit India-Forums very often. It is very encouraging for new comers like me. I am extremely touched with such a lovely and kind words that my fans rite in there. I am already registered there and will soon post something. My I-F id is Mishal.
