Over-night stardom comes with its share of perks and disadvantages.
All it takes is one hit show to change fortunes and create overnight superstars on small screen. That's why people remember Mona Singh as Jassi , recall Rajeev Khandelwal as Sujal , and know Prachi Desai better as Bani . After all, they're some of the lucky few who gained instant fame with their television debut.
Pulkit Samrat, who essays the role of Lakshya in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi , says, "I was passionate about being an actor. I even signed up for a show, but it never took off. I was jobless for a year during which I kept going from one audition to another. One fine day, I went to the audition for Lakshya's part, and started shooting the day after. I still can't believe the character's become such a craze."
Even for models, television has been a successful step forward . Take for instance, Vivan Bathena, Manish RaiSinghani, Nigaar Khan, Naazneen Patel, and others.
Former model Vikas Manaktala, aka Cadet Amardeep Huda in Left Right Left , says he received many offers before he chose LRL: "Even though the show is aired on a sister channel of a general entertainment channel, it's brought us great publicity . I get a lot of fan mails and even video remixes , which is very touching."
Needless to say, such over-night stardom comes with its share of perks and disadvantages. But, most newcomers say the positives far outweigh the negatives. Says firsttimer Shalini Chandran, who plays Maithili in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii , "I moved from Jamshedpur to Delhi only to become an actor. I don't really mind the long working hours for my pay pack is impressive."
Agrees Manish RaiSinghani , who's become popular as Sameer in Teen Bahuraniyaan , "Although we shoot round the clock, I have no clue if I'm popular. But the journey has been fantastic so far."
For Divyanka Tripathi, being an actor has made her parents happy. "My parents are proud of me and tell everybody that I'm their daughter," says Divyanka, who made her small screen debut with Banoo Main Teri Dulhann .
Getting paid well makes these first-time actors feel independent and self-confident . Says 23-year-old Amrapalli Gupta, who plays Bindiya in Teen Bahuraniyaan , "It's nice to be popular and receive so much appreciation. All the kids in my building call me didi. Being an actor has also made me independent, I've set up a house in Mumbai!"
While mass popularity has thrown up lots of opportunities, films remain on the wish-list for many TV stars. Karan Mehra, who's received rave reviews as Vedanta in Viruddh , says, "When I travel in local trains, people think it's part of my character, who has been ousted from his rich father's house, and so they give me blessings." He adds he's also done a cameo in Drona . "But, at this stage, I'm open to everything good that comes my way."
