I shudder to think what LTL would have been without Kala. She started off as a dark grey femme fatale 'but turned black as we progressed into the serial.
A perfect contrast to Nakusha's shinning white and too good to be true character, Kala vs Naku, is what I truly believe Vamp vs. Devi a la Hindi movies.
If Dutta is the protagonist then Kala IMO is the true antagonist of Laagi .
Kala's elegance, dark humor and charisma gave a new dimension to the predictable negative female characters in the TV serials. Her malevolence and machinations know no depth. She adds glitter, glamor and has a hypnotic charm that says "trust in me" đ
Kala is highly manipulative but controlled, never letting her true intentions and emotions come through. Her viciousness was never obvious and this is what made her more dangerous. Her saccharine sweetness bears a direct relation with the degree of her venomuosness.
Her command, control and dynamics in the evil trio's relationship add a new facet to sibling relationship. Kala knows that she is smarter than Leela and Roops and misses no opportunity to give them a good drubbing. Then why does she need them? Her megalomania requires a passive audience and where she can practice sharpening her claws to be ready for the real battle.
Also, her obsession with Dutta and his manipulation at her hands has something more psychotic that mere revenge. It's a cat and mouse game where Kala makes a display of her Tai's love and immediately takes the glimmer of happiness from Dutta eyes with something hurtful.
During Sup's engagement, Kala takes great pleasure in messing up with Dutta, Naku and Sups because by now she has realized that Naku is in love with DSP and that he cares about her, even if it is as a friend. It provides her with pure entertainment.
Her aim has been not only to harm Dutta mortally but also kill him emotionally. She leaves no stones unturned to hit out at Baji and Naku ~ Dutta's emotional anchors.
Kala wears the pants in the Kishore-Kala relationship. At times I have wondered why Kishore stuck with Kala -- was it Anay? Did Kisser boy by now realize that his wife was evilly mad and would go to any lengths to portray herself as normal to rest of the world?
Two places where I thought that CV's lost Kalavati was when she dangles Anay from the balcony ---- which mother does that --- No, totally, not acceptable by me. And the other when she ties bombs on AS.
However, her failed plans and over-confidence does add some comic element in the serial
If only Kala had been a few years younger, she would make us think whether the nurse at the hospital had mixed up the two newborns ~ Dutta and Kala ????
Because Kalavati Damodar Patil would suit her best - -even better than Kalavati Kishore Rao!
