Part One
Unable to look into his eyes anymore, Naku lowered her gaze. Dutta smiled at her faintly, and withdrew his hands to cross them across his chest. Naku closed her eyes, drew a deep breath, and took Bappa's name one last time before she started. "Saab, aap ko tho patha hai, hum ek choti si basthi se hai. Hamare ghar mein Aai, Baba, Setji, Mei aur…" Naku stuttered out of nervousness "…aur R-r-roopa …rehthe the". Dutta ears twitched, he had never heard this name before; especially not from Naku. "Roopa? Kaun Roopa?" He questioned amused. "Roopa meri badi behen" came the meek reply. Dutta was startled by this revelation. Naku had never mentioned that she had an older sister. "Kahan hai woh? Aur tum sab ke saath yahan kyun nahin hai?" Dutta probed further.
"Bathathi hai Saab. Uske bohaut bade sapne the, lekin hum gareeb the. Woh…Roopa hamesha se hi khoobsurat thi. Aur uski yehi khoobsurati uski barbaadi ka waja bangayi. Aai ne usko bohaut samjhaya, pann who kuch bji sunne ke liye thayaar hi nahin thi. Apni khoobsurati mein usko ek raastha mil gaya, apne sapne ko sach karne ka, amiir banne ka. Who galat logon se dosti karne lagi, aur uske ke kadham behekne lage. Paison ke laajal mein who nachne lagi, humse dhoor jaane lagi. Aur phi eek din, who Aai se jagda karke, hum sab ko chod ke…ghar ko chod ke , chali gayi. Aai ne uska laut ne ka bohaut intezaar kiya, pann who nahin aayi. Uss din ke baad Aai toot gayi Saab. Who ghabrane lagi, mere liye. Aur usne mujhe samjhaya, ke gareeb ke liye khoobsurat hona kisi shraap se kam nahin hai. Uss din se leke aaj tak aai ne hamesha mera rksha kiya Saab, is duniya se…duniya walon se…aur unki nazron se." Naku suddenly paused here, not knowing exactly how to continue. She looked up at Dutta, who was listening intently to every word she uttered. He was trying to decipher how any of this could possibly affect their future, but decided to wait until Naku was completely done.
"Saab, aap ko yaad hai, jab hum pehli baar mile? Mai ne aap se madat manga tha, us aadmi se bachne ke liye. Aur agle din aap ne poocha bhi tha, ke who humme kyun pareshaan kar raha tha. Us waqt mei aap se kuch nahin ken payi. Aap ke sawal ka jawab nahin de payi. Pann aaj, ussi sawal ka jawaab dene aayi hai mei Saab." Naku turned away from Dutta at this point. Her eyes feel upon the jug of water at this bedside table. She slowly progressed towards it and began to speak again.. "Who aadmi ek policw wala tha Saab. Who mere se shaadi karma chahtha tha. Woh…woh Aai aur mujhe bikul pasand nahin tha, pann hum kuch nahin kar sake. Ussne hum sabko dhamkaya, aur Baba ko bhi bohaut pita. Hum dar gaye the Saab. Aur phir…phir aai ko patha chala ke shaadi toh sirf ek bahana tha, uske iraade toh kuch aur hi the. Shaadi ke baad woh mujhe Dubai bejhna chahtha tha, paison ke liye." Dutta's eyes grew wide and became full of rage. "Naku, tune yeh sab mujhse pehle kyun nahin bataya? Kya tujhe mujhpe inta bhi bharosa nahin tha?" Dutta's voice was full of anger and hurt. "Aisi baat nahin hai saab" Nkau tried to explain. "Toh phir kaisi baat hai Naku?" Dutta snapped back.
"Saab" Naku pleaded "us waqt hum inte ghabraye hue the ke…ke humme nahin patha tha ke kis pe yakeen karen… aur kis pe nahin. Mujhe galt mat samajhna Saab… aap bohaut ache ho…pann us waqt hum aap ke barein mein kuch nahin jaanthe the. Aap ne humme bachaya, apne ghar mein rakha, aur humme ek nayi zindagi di. Hum apni pareshaniyan aap ke saamne rakhe aap ko aur takleef kaise dete?" Dutta slowly began to see her perception, but he was still angry. "Saab aap ka gussa sahi hai…pann hamari bhi majboori thi. Aur jab aapne mera vishwaas jeetha…mei, mei aap ko batana chahthi thi….sab kuch sach sach batana chahthi thi, lekin Aai ne mana kiya tha Saab. Aue mei Aai ki baat kaise taal sakthi hoon?" Naku sighed and tried to find the right words to say, in order to make him understand.
Dutta realized that Naku was not really at fault, but still felt the need to reassure her. "Aage se aisi koi bhi baat ho, toh sab se pehle tu mujhe batayegi Naku… samajh gayi na?" Naku nodded in approval, but did not turn to face him. Dutta realized that Naku was not done, there was something more she wanted to say. "Kya baat hai Naku?" he asked softly, walking towards her. "Saab, yeh dekh kea cha laga ke sach sun ke aap ko gussa aaya… ke aap mujhpe apna haq samajhthe ho. Pann… aap ko ajeeb nahin lagtha…ke koi mujh jaisi..b-b-ad-soorat ladki ko is…is dhandhe mein kyun bejhtha?"
Dutta stopped in his tracks, a bit taken aback by Naku's words. Exactly what was she trying to say? What did she want him to see" "Tu kehna kya chahthi hai? Mei kuch samjha nahin." Dutta had a small inkling that something big was waiting for him in the shadows. He hoped that Naku would prove him wrong. NAku hestitantly continued "Saab, Roopa ke wajai se Aai ko meri fikar hone lagi. Usko laga ki jab mei badi hojayegi toh logon ke behkave mein aakar mei bhi Roopa ki tarha ban jayegi. Meri Aai mujhse bohaut pyaar karthi hai saab. Usne hamesha har faisla mere bhalayi ke like hi kiya. Who hamesha dhal banke meri raksha karthi hai. Uske ek faisle ne mujhe badal diys… aur meri ka sab se bada sach chupgaya…e kais a sach who meri wajood se juda hua hai….aur aaj mei wahi sach aap ke saath baatna chahthi hoon."
Naku picked up the jug of water and poured a small amont into the plam of her hand. She played with it for a second before wiping away the kajal from her hands. Dutta looked at Naku puzzled by her twisted words. He drew a deep breathand braced himself for the final truth. Naku too drew a deep breath and thought 'this is it'. "Aai ke darr ke wajai se….uske us ek faisle ke wajai se…aaj tak mei ne aap se apni asli chechra chupaya. Mai aap ko bohautpehle batana chahthi thi Saab…pann Aai ne mana kiya, mujhe apni kasam de kar. Sach yeh hai ki har din mei apne aap pe kaala rand daalthi hai. Mei kaali nahin hai Saab." Naku finally turned to face him and slowly brought her white hands forward. Dutta's gaze fell upon Naku's hand. He just stood there like a rock, staring at her in disbelief. Naku – his Naku- was not black; not even close. And she had hidden this truth from him till today, the day before their wedding. He didn't know what to say, what to do, or even what to think. Naku tried to read his eyes, and saw how much it was affecting him. She chose her words carefully and spoke again "Saab muhje patha hai aap kya soch rahe ho. Agar aap mujhse gussa ho, toh mei samajh sakthi hai. Mera yakeen karo Saab, mei aap ko kabhi dokha nahin dena chahthi thi." Dutts broke his silence "Dhoka!...dhoka hi toh diya hai tune Naku! Kaise karron mei tera yakeen? Kaise Naku?" The agony was evident in his voice, and it crushed Naku's heart.
"Mei kya karthi Saab? Ek taraf Aai ki kasam aur doosri taraf aap ka pyaar. Aap hi batao Saab… aap mere jaga hote toh aap kya kathe?" Dutta closed his eyes and tried to fight back the tears. Seeing this Naku decided to humble herself. "Saab, agar aap ko lagta hai ki mei galat hai, toh teek hai. Aap mujhe jo bhi saza denge mujhe manzoor hai." Naku's voice reached his ears clearly, but Dutta's mind had stopped processing her words. "Saza?...Mei kya saza doon tujhe Naku?" He was at a loss of words "Kya? …Kyun?...kyun kiya aisa tune?" Dutta couldn't stop himself from getting angry. He needed time to think. He needed time alone. He grabbed Naku's hand and dragged her to the door. "Chali ja yahan se Naku" He commanded "Yehi tera saza hai. Is waqt mei akele rehna chahtha hoon." Naku stood there speechless at the words coming out of his mouth. "Tune suna nahin?" Dutta tightened his grip on her arm, speaking through clenched teeth "Chali ja yahan se…meri nazron se door."
Tears strolled down Naku's face and she slowly stepped back, all the while looking into his eyes. Dutta was too hurt to change his mind, and shut the door in Naku's face. Naku turned away and headed towards the stairs lifelessly. As she descended down the staircase, she pondered over his final words. 'Agar Saab chahthe hai ki mei cahli jaoon, toh mei jayegi. Unke nazron ke saamne tab tak nahin aayegi, jab tak woh mujhe maaf nahin kar dete.' Naku walked across the hall and approached the door. She turned back and glanced over the house thoughtfully. "Mei wapas aayegi Saab…aap kudh mujhe lene aogey" Naku stepped out of the house with complete determination. As she walked towards the main gate, she looked up to see a figure approaching her. "Kya re Naku? Inti raat ko kidar ja rahi hai tu?" Baaji asked, with a hint of worry. Naku just smiled at him, and tried to brush off his concerns. "Tu bhi na Baaji…Is waqt mei kahan jayegi? Bas woh Aai ke paas hi…" Naku trailed off. She hated lying to Baaji, but she needed to fight this battle alone. But Baaji knew her too well; he could sense the sadness in her eyes.
As she walked past him, he grabbed her hand to stop her. That's when he realized the colour wasn't there, and he immediately understood what had happened. "Yedi hogayi hai kya? Aai Sahib…mei…teri Aai….hum sab ke mana karne ke bawajood tune…tune Bhao ko sab sach bata diya? Kal teri shaadi hai Naku, Bhao ke saath. Kyun kiya re tune aisa?" Baaji exploded. "Isi liye toh Baaji…kal meri shaadi hai, Saab ke saath. Inta pavitra rishtha mei ek jhoot ke saath kaise shuru karthi? Saab mere se gussa ho toh mei seh sakthi hai Baaji…pann woh mujhe dokhebaaz samjhe…mere pyaar ko dhoka samjhe…mei nahin seh sakthi. Pichli baar unko sirf galat-feimi hui thi…lekin is baar sach chupake Mei phir se unka vishwaas nahin thodna chahthi" Naku cried.
"Arre Naku, Mei samajhtha hai re…mei sab samajhtha hai..pann tujhe Baho ka gussa patha hai na? Gusse mein uska dimaag ghum jaatha hai…aur patha nahin kya kar detha hai who" Baaji tried to make her understand. "Tu chintha mat kar Baaj. Saab mujhse abhi thoda gussa hai…pann mujhe yakeen hai woh mujhe zaroor samjhenge" Naku reassured him. Baaji wanted to tell Naku she was right. He wanted to tell himself she was right. But knowing Bhao, he also knew how blind and oblivious he could be in his anger. So at that moment Baaji decided that come what may, he would not let Dutta make the wrong decision. He would not let anything separate Dutta and Naku. Baaji looked at Naku lovingly and said "Naku tu fikar mat kar…mei hai na…tu apni Aai ke paas ja…Bhao ko mei sambhal lega…samjhyega mei usko…tu ja, araam kar le." Baaji rushed into the house before Naku could stop him. A single tear traced the course of her face, and she began to walk away from Patil Niwas; leaving with the hope that her Saab would come looking for her and bring her back.
