Hey Swapna...ThankyouHey suvi,

"Mumma, where's my clothes?" I heard Anu whine. I saw her standing outside the bathroom swaddled in a towel, shivering.
"Oh my…Did you have a bath all by yourself?" I pushed the quilt off myself and went up to the walk-in wardrobe, not realising that someone was already in there.
"Er…" I tapped him on the shoulder, "Bhai?"
He jerked slightly, startled. "Oh, Naku! We didn't wake you up, did we?"
"Um, no." I grabbed a lilac summer dress off the rack and headed back into the room. "Anu, come here sweety. Look, do you want to wear this?"
Baji leaned against the wall, "I didn't want to wake you up, so I bathed Anu, myself."
I picked Anu up and helped her wriggle into the dress, "Mmnhmmn thanks!" I mumbled distractedly, still half-asleep, "My gorgeous sugar plum" I pecked her cheek and placed her on the ground.
"Actually, I knew where her clothes were kept. I couldn't decide"
"You could've asked Anu" I lifted her wet towel off the ground and threw it towards him. He caught it and chucked it into the laundry basket.
"By the way, have you finished packing?"
"Er..yeah. I think. Did you book your tickets?"
"No, I am going to drive" I smiled, "Now come on downstairs. Tina will be here soon, and I have to prepare breakfast. We will leave for the airport, together"
Baji scrunched up his forehead, as if he was concentrating.
"Tina's coming?"
"Of course she is!" I grinned, "How can she not come? She has to see the beaches…or rather the guys on the beaches"
He smiled awkwardly.
-
"Cooo-eee!" Tina gurgled as she fed a spoon of Baby Food into Anu's mouth.
"You really don't need to make those weird noises, you know. She's a big girl now, aren't you?" I pulled her cheeks as she grinned widely through the gunk caked around her mouth. I grabbed a tissue and wiped her mouth.
"I know!" she tossed a grape into the air and caught it with her mouth, causing Anu to clap her hands and giggle in delight. "Do it again!"
"Tina! Hurry up and feed her, we have to leave early, otherwise god knows what time we will arrive there"
"We can't even leave until Dutta comes, so who cares?"
"How does Dutta come into this?"
"He's coming with us! I invited him along!"
"What?! Why would you do such a thing?"
"You sound like I did something bad. Come on, he's not a bad guy. He's pretty cute, actually" she let out a small giggle, "And, the more the merrier"
"You do know we aren't exactly going on a field trip, right?"
"You aren't. But Anu and I are."
Naku shook her head; as Baji came in and declared 'Dutta's here and I have put all the luggage in the car!'
"Come on, then!" Tina wiped Anu's face with a baby wipe, and she jumped down and ran outside to the car.
(DUTTA)
I leaned back on the bonnet of the car, and stared at her face. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, her lips were covered in clear gloss, and her eyes were accented by eyeliner.
'Hey, Dutta.'
'Hi. Where does my car go?' He cared less for formal greetings, and more for actually getting the work done.
'In the garage.'
'And yours?'
'We're taking it?'
'So, you're going to actually drive all the way to Brisbane.'
'I am.'
He guffawed, 'Are you serious? You probably couldn't drive to Newcastle, and you want to go…'
'I've done it before, so don't scoff at me. You can go and put your car in the garage.' She dismissed him and moved on to help Tina make sure that everything was prepared for the journey.
-
Naku wasn't in a talkative mood, and Tina and Baji were talking with themselves. I decided to eavesdrop a little, to ease my boredom.
'So, like, how was India?' Tina said.
'Well, the people are kind, the kids are sweet, but the best thing of all is the food!'
'Ooh! But how could you eat it? I fell sick each time I tried to eat anything that wasn't made at home'
'I got used to it.'
'Oh…'
Their conversation was enough to put me to sleep. I tried to concentrate on Naku's face. She was frowning slightly, her attention completely on the road.
'Nakusha.'
'What is it?' she snapped, 'Don't disturb me while I'm driving.'
'Shut up, Naku. You're going to wake Anu up.' Tina butted in.
I sighed and gazed out of the window at the passing cars.
-
'Dutta!' Aayi clasped my head to herself, 'My son! I missed you so much!'
'Aayi!' I hugged her back, 'I missed you too. I'm so glad that you're back!'
Aayi finally let go of me, her attention diverted to Naku and Anu, standing behind me. "Beta, who are they?"
"Oh, them…"
Naku came forward to touch Aayi's feet, 'Namaste, Auntyji.'
'Namaste, beti' Aayi smiled.
'I'm the interior designer.' Naku smiled back.
Aayi gave her a confused smile, and faced me with her eyebrows raised curiously.
'And this is my daughter'
Anu grinned at Aayi. 'Hello!'
Aayi beamed and bent to plant a kiss on Anu's cheek. 'Such a sweet girl!'
Baji and Tina came together to greet Aayi.
'Namaste' they said in unison.
Baji turned towards Naku, 'Ok, I should go now.'
She nodded, her chin turning to each side instead of up and down. Baji hugged her and ruffled Anu's hair. He smiled and nodded at Aayi and me, then turned towards Tina.
Surprising me, she hugged Baji. It was supposed to be a "friendly" hug, but I reckon they stayed like a tad too long than they should have. I shrugged away my thoughts and picked up Aayi's luggage.
'Dutta, will it all fit?' Naku tapped the suitcase with her nail. I followed her gaze, noticing that Aayi had packed for an entire family.
'Why all these bags, Aayi? Your stuff is already here, then what was the need for more?'
'Arre Dutta, I can't buy all my things over here. Yahaan pe toh kuch bhi dhanka nahi milta.'
I rolled my eyes. 'I'll go to the post office, and send these home' I put the luggage, besides a small suitcase, back on the trolley.
'Why, Dutta? I thought that our car was big enough.'
'Aayi, all of our bags are there, so one bag can fit, but not all of this!'
'Why all of your bags?' Aayi seemed to be getting more baffled by each passing second.
'We're going for a trip!' I tried to plaster an excited smile on my face, 'To Queensland!'
Aayi clutched her pallu to her mouth, 'Why? Arre, at least let me go home, rest, and tomorrow...'
'No, Aayi, the plan's been made.'
'Dutta!' Aayi sighed.
Naku looked to and fro to our faces with an apologetic look, 'Dutta, Auntyji is right. You can go home if you want, and then start tomorrow.'
'And you?'
Naku bit her lower lip, 'Well, I can't delay my trip.'
'Then, no, we will go today itself. And Aayi, I've already paid for the cabin. The longer we stay, the better it is, right?'
Aayi thought for a moment, and then nodded. 'Accha hi hai. I will join those yoga classes. Mann ko shanti milegi. Especially after such a long journey.'
YES! I blew her a kiss, and wheeled the trolley away. 'Love you, Aayi!'
-
(Nakusha)
Dutta was in the seat beside me, while Auntyji and Tina chatted animatedly with Anu as she narrated one of her far-fetched tales.
'So, Naku. Why exactly are you going to Brisbane?'
'To meet my parents.' I kept my eyes on the road, tightening my grip on the steering wheel. I didn't want to talk about that. Anything but that.
'Oh.'
I think he got the hint, since he didn't try to start a conversation for the rest of the journey. The trip was uneventful; we stopped once at a gas station, and then again at a Subway outlet.
__
I dropped Dutta and Auntyji off at their resort, and continued driving towards Brisbane. The sun had set, and Anu was asleep in her booster seat.
__
I tucked Anu into the crib. Tina was sitting on the recliner, watching TV at a low volume.
'What, now, Tweets?' I whispered, making myself comfy on the armchair across her.
'Your choice! Romantic movie or comedy?'
I gritted my teeth in impatience. 'I wasn't talking about that! How do I go and meet ma and papa?'
'You go to their house, and…'
I raised my hand to stop her, 'Tina, it's not the time to joke! Seriously.'
'Look, Naku. I can't help you in this. You have to do this by yourself. The only advice I can give you is….follow your heart.' She shrugged.
I rested my cheek on the palm of my hand. 'I'm lost.'
'You can try what I told you. Go to their…your house. And then talk with them. Tell them everything!'
I chewed on the nail of my thumb, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Oh god!
__
Diing! I fumbled for my phone and held it against my ear. Who calls anyone in the middle of the night?!
'Hello?'
'Nakku?'
'Dutta…? Is anything wrong?'
'No! I just felt like talking to you!'
'Are you have moodswings or something? Why in the world do you feel like talking to me, in the middle of the friggin NIGHT?'
'Ouch! Just because.'
'So, what do you feel like talking about?' I asked with sarcastic sweetness.
He kept me entrapped in his web of useless small talk for half an hour, and then I heard a light snore. I sighed exasperatedly, and tossed the phone onto the bedside table.
