Why I Love Flawed Characters

I love flawed characters. I really really love them. All things dark and flawed appeal to me. Which is why, Dutta is addictive. There's this darkness, this inexplicable sorrow about him. There's something soul-stirring about him.

He's got his own set of flaws. He's hotheaded. Acts without thinking. Cannot stand lies or betrayal. And yet every person in his life is out to cheat him, one way or the other. He has his own set of prejudices, thanks to his upbringing, his lost past, and his "unlucky at love" fate. He is more often than not, oblivious to others' pain. Not that he's heartless, just that he can't see beyond his pain. When AS hid DPs truth from him, all he could think about was her betrayal, not her pain. He loves Naku to distraction, but doesn't really know her. He has been so caught up in his own sorrow to read the pain in her eyes. He is insecure. All his anger stems from his insecurity. For him, it's almost like he doesn't deserve to be loved for himself. He sees himself as this person beyond redemption.

Naku. It's amazing how different they are, and yet this character is similar to Dutta's. She is not the master of her own fate. She has a heart and a face that could get her every good thing in life. And yet, her circumstances force her to lead a life that would have broken anyone weaker than her. She's got spirit. Inspite of her tears and naivety, she's tough. She almost landed in More's evil web, but her destiny intervened. She became Dutta's friend, his estranged wife, and is now his life. She's seen almost as much pain as Dutta. While all the negativity has hardened Dutta on the outside, it's broken him on the inside. At the same time, Naku's emerged unfazed, she remains untouched. She might appear weak on the outside, but inside she possesses that moral courage Dutta lacks. She believes in people, even those who hurt her. While she is good, she is also ready to lie, or even hide a truth if it means saving someone's life. She'll readily give up her life, or even stand up without batting an eyelid for the people she loves. Her principles don't necessarily make her righteous, she always does what she believes is right in the situation. For it's people she believes in, not principles. She's easily manipulated by people, the evil ones, but somehow her faith has always kept her safe. Her faith has moved mountains. Well, it has moved Dutta, hasn't it?

It's amazing how these characters, inspite of being so flawed are perfect for each other. They aren't just gonna complete each other, they're gonna share each other's completeness. Dutta believes that beauty equals betrayal. Hence it was necessary for him to love the dark Naku first, without knowing her truth. If she had told him the truth, and he'd slowly come to terms with it, half of the fun would've been lost. Now that she's altered his life and lifted him out of one of the worst spells of his life, he needs to decide. Her keeping this secret from him, does that make her a traitor? Does that make her the same as Seema and Supriya? Now is when all his preconceived notions will bite the dust. Now is when he learns that it's not always about him. When he finds out that Nakusha's hidden her life under a layer of soot, silently borne all the taunts inspite of being dazzlingly beautiful, he'll have to question himself. He'll slowly realize that pain isn't always what you express, sometimes the sacrifice you make to see someone happy is far far beautiful. He will have to look into his heart and decide if she is true or not. While he's always told her why he's loved her, now he'll have to ask himself if she's worthy of the trust, if he's worthy of the silent love she's always bestowed on him!

Nakusha believes that her beauty is her curse. She's always had something bad happen to her whenever she revealed her face. Every man who's seen her beauty has wanted to harm her, make her his. And hence she lived the life of someone ugly and unwanted. And that is why, Dutta loving her the way she was, respecting her altered all her notions. She fell in love with him because he treated her like a lady, even when she was invisible to the rest. She found a man who loves her deeply, and looks at her as if she's the most beautiful woman in the world, even when she's sporting a thick layer of soot, and wearing her rags. This is the most pleasant surprise she's ever received. The answer to her faith. And now, her beauty's again gonna prove a curse, coz she knows that D's gonna hate her once the soot comes off. Now is the test of her love. It is only Dutta's love that can finally make her realize that her beauty doesn't have anything to do with love. He has to see her goodness that shines through.

And so we have a match that is flawless. Am waiting for them to slowly heal each other, my flawed diamonds!!

Now what do I say, You have said it all.

You are such a good writer. What you have written is what I feel about Dutta and Nakku. Whatever these both do, they are the heart of this show and yes, they have flaws...it is acceptable and one of the reason for me to love them.

Loved how you called them 'flawed diamonds'! 👏

Thanks crystal!😊

Their flaws make them human, and all the more lovable. 😳

Oh my goodness! SO beautifully written! I would watch LTL day and night just to be able to get all caught up on the episodes I haven't seen. One of the main strengths of this show is the depth of characterization of its protagonists - and the way you have described Dutta and Nakusha is essentially what I feel about them even though I may not have seen every step of their journey just yet. Brilliant analysis of Dutta's and Nakusha's personalities, motivations, and mentalities. This is why I am so emotionally attached to them, and it's as gratifying as it is stressful. I will wait for them to heal each other because I know that theirs is a story worth watching, despite all their pain.

Thanks a lot. Yes, everything you said is true. Both characters have so many layers to them, and this depth makes LTL different from every other show on TV. You must go and watch all the old episodes. You are gonna fall in love with them all over again. There is this poignance to the old Tasha scenes, they are unhurried and sad...and heartwrenching at times. And their friendship is so beautiful it'll bring tears to your eyes.

Liz! girl u rock!👏.. Thank u for this post!!! thank u so much... it was really needed..as lately Nakusha has been bashed upside down ... and being accused of character assassination ..

i tell u the day i feel her character is butchered ill stop watching Laagi tujhse lagan .. same goes for dutta.. to me this show is abt THEM! both my heart and mind wont be able to tolerate if either of their characters loses the shine .... so that would be the end for me,....

Nakusha as u said is also an imperfect character.. she is young! naive and strong individual inspite of her weaknesses her trust in spiritual side has given her many reasons to believe in her bappa..but when it comes to duta she had also abandoned her bappa .....

now coming to her lie.. how can one forget tht she was being told that his life is in danger .. i know she was trying hard to accept AS' decision to marry him in koel roop but her HEART was not ready to let her take this deicison ... she stood there in her real roop! praying to find a solution! it was when AS came with a solution which did helped her to calm down a bit as another big issue was riased infront of her... ( now AS here Mentioned that she has to MARRY to be his kavaj, naksuha doesn't know the exact words by purohit..either AS misinerpreted pandit or pandit meant to get them maried as without marriage how can they stay together?? and after knowing her truth he mught have abandonded her or it would have ended up with a seperation of these two .. so being a mother or whatever she thought it would be better to marry them off.. lame reason by AS i know ) and she was just being told that Pati or sach ??? and A girl like nakusha who made dutta's car stopped at a mandir inorder to pray for his father inspite of knowing he has no time left...so if she still would have gone with her sachaai then it would be called as a character assassination for her ...

For the truth ... either way it was already too late... she was still being termed as a dhokay baaz in dutta's book... wasn't she??

so this whole development will cause her pain!! for Dutta she will be there.. baaji will be there! even if he abandon her .. per who will be there for nakusha???

again .. im not defending her Fault! 😊 to me she would have told him they day they became friends ...there she was at fault! no one would have stopped her.. Things would have been better for her .. per inti complex aur beautifully layered story dekhnay ko na milti in that case. 😊

thank u once again for this wonderful write up ...

😆@ Sara

I agree. The characters of D and Naku keep the show alive. And I'm glad that you liked my post. I had a feeling you'd like it.😳

And yes, I had my misgivings about Naku marrying Dutta in her dark avatar, hiding her truth from him during the marriage. But once you reminded me of that Kaun karega isse shaadi wala promo things kind of fell into place. It makes sense. Dutta had to accept Naku wholeheartedly in her dark avatar! With love! The whole serial is built on that premise!

Naku's not the smartest person when it comes to herself. She might know how to solve Dutta's problems, but she doesn't know to fight for herself. It's like Baaji said: Wo kabhi apna haq nahi mangegi, aapko use apna haq dena padega! So, it was easy for AS to convince her with her lame logic. Apni Nakusha to hai hi gullible. And the moment she heard that her suhaag ko khatra hai, she forgot about herself. To all the Naku bashers, all I'd like to say is that she's not perfect. She is not educated or streetsmart. She has none of the survival tactics or female wiles all other television heroines have. She is dumb, when it comes to a lot of things. Very very superstitious, to the point of being annoying sometimes. But above all, she is good. Like AS said, there's so much goodness in her that it shines through the ugly facade she maintains. She hasn't been able to hide it. For me, Dutta's more flawed than Naku.

sigh. I am waiting, waiting waiting for the love story.....and I know that it'll be worth the wait. Aur kitna tarsaoge CVs?😳😆
