Naku felt pangs of guilt for she knew that he did not know HER completely. He did not know...could not have known...the secret she kept hidden under the soot. He knew her heart, he knew her love for him, yet he did not know a most basic thing...her face. She felt a hesitation...how would he react? Was this a betrayal of their love? Of his honesty and trust in her?
Naku said nothing, she stayed in his arms. There was nothing else when he was there.
Dutta told her of his wish to have her come back to the niwas, to start a life together. He told her of his inability to be without her. Of this, he was sure. Their time apart had shown him that he needed Naku in his life, and he would always be dead on the inside without her.
Naku teared up and smiled...his words, though he struggled for them, were so loving, and she nodded. She looked into his eyes again, put her hand on his face, and her face against his. Dutta felt the naturalness of her touch...of their being together, and he yearned for her, all of her. [GP should switch up the AC] 😆
Bhao drove Naku back, Babi and Sethji sitting in the back. They both stole glances at each other, but remained largely silent. Only Sethji's occasional chatter broke the silence. His questions about Baji, everyone in the house, Anay, etc. Sethji felt his tai was happy, and it showed in his words and delight. Babi too understood...Dutta had accepted Naku...all of Naku...with and without her makeup. Babi felt her heart swell up when she caught a glimpse of Dutta and Naku looking at each other. She thanked God for his benevolence and protection of her beti and the love of her life, Dutta.
Dutta walked in through the doors, hand in hand with Nakusha, although in typical style, it was he who was leading the charge. The family had been sitting in the formal room, quietly thinking through what had happened earlier that day when Bhao left the house, without informing anyone, except Baji. But Kala knew..."Bhao, tu kaha ja rahe hai?" she asked despite knowing from the look on his face where exactly he was going. He did not answer her, swept away in his own thoughts of his house, his life without Naku.
Dutta did not stop to explain...he brought her to their room. Naku looked confused as to why he did not stop to acknowledge the family, but in her heart, she knew Dutta always had a reason. He wanted to be alone with her. [I know what you are thinking 😉 😳 ...Haiye haiye..shame on you!]
Dutta quietly sat Naku down on his bed...[Stop it! You're ruining my tale here!] 😆 He looks into her eyes, he always got lost in them, those big, beautiful, strong, vulnerable, loving eyes. Dutta put his hand in his pocket and pulled out his chain--the mangalsutra he had given her when he had married her. The necklace had found its rightful place, he knew that, the only place it belonged and that being around the neck of his lover.
He placed it around her neck, touching her neck with his hands. Naku looked at him all this time, and both again stole a look.
Dutta: "It is where it belongs...to whom it always belonged."
He got up, took out a folded paper containing sindhoor, and was about to fill her maang.
Naku: "Mein apse kuch batana chaati hu. Voh meri sabse bada... "
Dutta looked shocked, but he gave her the space, the time she needed. Naku got up, walked to the (magical) armoire, and pulled out a small cloth hesitatingly. She brought it over to Dutta. "Kshama kariye..." she said as she put the cloth in his hands.
Naku started her story, of her mother, her sister, of living in fear, of her mother living in fear, of Morey, and his intentions, and....of the moment she met the love of her life. She told him of why she kept her face hidden, of her desire to be believe when it came to Supriya. Naku held his hand, and then brought it to her face. She put her hand on to his face and then rested it on his top of his hand that was on her face. And then, with each stroke, she revealed a part of herself. Piece by piece, Naku was freed of her secret, freed of her guilt. Dutta could not find the words to begin to say what he was feeling. Before him was someone else, some other face, not his Naku. Naku had tears in her eyes, of her shame in hiding her truth from him, of her shame at not trusting him, of her fear that he would not understand.
Dutta looked away, but she tugged at his hand, and made him wipe off the rest of the make-up from her face. "Yeh mere jivan ki sabse badi secret thi...ab kuch nahi hai. Yeh apki Naku hai...sirf apki." She probed into his eyes, and in her worry, got up. Naku was upset, she had betrayed him. She explained to him she never wanted to keep this from him. But how could she not? She had wanted to see him happy in his life, she could not let him see her. When he thought that she had betrayed him, she did not have the heart to reveal her truth because it would be another betrayal. When he had set her free, she could not do it, because she thought he did not love her...what was the use then?
She looked back at him, and he sternly walked towards her. He grabbed her hand, and filled her maang with sindhoor. "Main ne kediya tha na? Main apse bahut pyar karta hu Naku. Tu meri jaan hai."
