Last night, Indian television's favourite bahu Tulsi breathed her last on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The iconic daughter-in-law of the Virani parivaar, played by Smriti Irani was on air for seven long years.

Smriti, who found instant fame as Tulsi, had begun to feel stifled working with Balaji, where everything is closely supervised by Ekta Kapoor. Her relationship with Ekta had soured and the monotony of playing a character that would leap by 20 years every year was getting to her. Not just that, over the years Smriti ventured into production and had her own shows Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan and Virrudh to take care of.

Now we've heard that things were even worse than that. A close friend of Smriti says, "Smriti was not even aware of the goings-on in the show. She had not been told when her track was going to end. She was just called and asked to shoot for her death scene and she quietly shot for it and left. She never asked for time off and it's rather funny when people at Balaji say that she asked for a break. Smriti is completely clueless about being bumped off the show." Well, what Balaji has hidden from her, newspapers will convey to her today.

Not just that, there were many other instances that speak of the production house's harshness towards the actress. "Smriti has just had a miscarriage. Yet she was asked to report to the sets the very next day after she miscarried. She didn't shoot for Thodi Si Zameen… or Virrudh, but she had to shoot for Kyunki…" says the friend.

Tulsi is indeed a great loss to Kyunki… Many on the sets cannot believe that Smriti is not part of the show any more.

Nivedita Basu, creative head, Balaji Telefilms says, "We are going to start shooting with Gautami Gadgil, the new Tulsi from today as it is an auspicious day for us (Ekta's birthday). Gautami is obviously a little worried as she has to meet tremendous expectations. No one on the sets believes that Smriti won't be with us from now on."

But why did they shortlist Gautami when they were so excited about roping in Padmini Kolhapure? "We had a viewers' poll on Star News and there was a tie between the two actresses. However, we decided to cast Gautami as she is an accepted face on television."
