We've heard of hair today, gone tomorrow, but have you heard this one: 'Stubble today, beard tomorrow?' While the rugged, unshaven, carefree-macho look was the haute thing for the male species last season, this summer, the boys are taking things a step further. Or should we say a shave less! 'Coz it seems to be cool (or hot?) to wear your hair on your cheek, your chin and show off that masculine streak. Bye-bye metrosexual?
Actor Rohit Roy chanced upon this extreme macho bearded look. In fact, he's calling it his 'seven-day stubble'. "I had to have the scruffy look for my upcoming movie, but now, I don't seem to want to let it go. Besides, I was bored of seeing the same face in the mirror everyday. This is a welcome change," he laughs. Like TV actor Hiten Tejwani who also prefers to have a "rough look" because "it does justice to my older character onscreen and looks good offscreen," he says.
Actor Chetan Hansraj feels the unshaven look ups his masculine quotient, so does music composer Salim Merchant, who claims to always have been a 'bearded guy'. "This is supposed to be the look for men. It's male-friendly; it brings out the man in you. It's nice to see even chocolate heroes donning facial hair these days," says Salim. Onscreen baddie Akashh Deep Saigal seconds that opinion. "Once in a while, I like the clean-shaven look, but I prefer the rugged, unkempt one. Clean-shaven is more 'cutie'. Even girls today are giving the stubbled guys a second look," he smiles.
Fashion choreographer Achla Sachdev, however, is of a different viewpoint. She believes most men are just too lazy to shave, hence the excuse: 'The bearded look is in these days'. "I'd still go for a clean shave or a slight stubble, that looks sexy," she says.
Stylist Avan Pereira admits that most men these days are throwing away those razors and bringing on the "natural look", or as is also called, the overall unkempt look. "It's not just the beard, it's the entire appearance. Slashed jeans, open shirt button, chunky jewellery — unkempt was never more cool," says Avan. So all you mamas who want their 'good, clean' boys back, well, they're just grinning and bear(d)ing it
