Hey everyone,

as i watched latest episode of desperate housewives - fabulous serial!!!i thought this would be a great title for this...

EKTA WHEN LAST APPEARED IN KOFFEE WITH KARAN, said her serials were not regressive and as i am a fervent feminist, i wished to delve deeper in the subject because im not sure Ekta even knows what does 'regressive' means.

First of all, it would be plain ridiculous to think that the creatives are hired for nothing and it is Ekta who comes up with these plots. She might be the initial instigator of the outline of the serial but i doubt she has much to do about the serials plots & subplots thoroughly. So if there are be praised it goes to both creatives and Ekta, and if they are to be angry at they are, not EKTA ONLY!!!

I will mention stuff and rank them as plus or minus...
I will try to be as unbiased as possible 😆 😕

1. All her serials are female-oriented : plus & minus

2. All her actresses wear saris, salwar kamiz, churidar: plus & minus: upholds the indian tradition but is not reflective of reality - women who work at offices do wear suit and the youngster wear jeans, women after marriage wear saris mostly for ceremonies or occassions, otherwise they wear everything else they want

3. Rarely do we see the women working in her serials: sure their hands, scheming mind work but not offices shown or independant job: minus - Nandini - was shown as a journalist for a while, Ganga - as a business tycoon (but it never revolved around their job - simply mentioning a job name is not enough!!!!😡)- most of them are housewives and frankly from the way it is shown in her serials its like the idiom 'idle mind is the workshop of the devil', meddling in others business, scheming here and there, fight with saas, or nanad or husband for that matter.... You keep feeling to shout GET A LIFE!!!!GET A JOB!!!

4. The women are always shown scheming, plotting,b****ing(sorry that😳 cant find any word): minus reflects women image badly - i admit some are like that but not all

5. Have extremes for womans image: Vamp , sauth, Mother/Goddess/freaking perfect, virgins (role model daughters!!!) Minus : if it is fiction it ok, but trying to portray this as society 😕 Seem they need to see the world

6. You must be wondering why not mention MEN - well most of the time they are overshadowed by the female actors Nothing much to say

7. 🤢

8. The first time rape was shown - i must admit it was brave and with a great acting of Gauri Pradhan it was fine...especially after the rape the scenes where she was shown fighting the inner demons, memories and nightmares and how slowly she handled it....

But by the mediocre acting of KT, sadly the second rape left us untouched after the initial shock of the rape...Perhaps the bad presence of mind to show her looking and feeling normal, and getting her married got us all confused😕

9. With Kyunki and other serials Ekta productions seem to frighten off young girls on the treshold of marriage

Is a scheming saas awaiting her?
Is the nanad gonna be around to blow things out of proportion?
Or does the husband come with a special deal : husband ek muft mein sauth aur bacha!!! 🤢

It great that TELEVISION HAS PROGRESSED FROM YESTER YEARS BUT IS THIS THE DIRECTION WE WANT IT, CAN MORE SERIALS LIKE KOFFEE WITH KARAN, LEFT RIGHT LEFT, VIRRUD,THORI SI ZAMEEN SAVE THE DAY!!! IS THAT WHY COMPETITION IS HEALTHY?!!! IS THE REIGN OF EKTA JUSTIFIED?! HAVE THE AUDIENCE LOST THEIR INTELLIGENCE?! DO THEY WANT TO COME HOME FOR MINDLESS INSIPID RELENTLESSLY REPETITIVE SERIALS?! WHEN YOU WATCH WESTERN SERIALS LIKE GREYS ANATOMY,FRIENDS,DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES,LOST, PRISON BREAK you wonder why are you watching all these tu tu mein mein rona dhona 🤪 which depicts a distortion of our reality if not far from our reality.....ARE WE TO BLAME TO CONTINUE TO WATCH?! THE SUPPLY AND DEMAND is there....

ARE WE THE REASON WHY WE ARE TODAY FED THE SAME STUFF EVERYDAY, ON EVERY CHANNEL....

IT IS TIME TO ARISE!!! AWAKE!!! TO SAY NO...

ITS TIME TO DREAM OF A BETTER PLACE...JAAGO

(sorrry for the caps but had to capture the attention!!!)

i watched that show from the very beginning one of my favorites, and i agree with you, the women on that show are so strong and influential! but maybe Etka's womens are the housewives of india and these are the ones in the US.... so i dont know but its a wonderful show i tried to get videos up for it on the ABC forum here but its too time consuming it would take too long for each episode since its like 300-400 MB... i would also like to see something more like DH in ksbkbt ... its such a good show.

To take your point about working women--

If she shows working women there are only three scenarios--

1> She works before her marriage, then as soon as she marries she becomes the aadarsh bahu and leaves off working. Okay, many women do give up working after having kids and all, but here it happens instantly, today you are married, tomorrow you stop working.
E.g.: Nandini was a journalist, Tanya was a businesswoman, later they both became doormats to their respective husbands.

2> She is a successful career woman, but only because she does not have a proper family. At no time can a woman have both.
E.g.: Prime example is Ganga. When she started working, it led to misunderstandings between Sahil and herself, ultimately leading to divorce. Today she is a successful businesswoman, but has no family life. Tomorrow if she and Sahil get together, I bet she will hand over the reins of her business to Nakul and Lakshya and retire.

3> She is a successful career woman, and she is also an evil man-hungry witch! This is the most common prototype.
E.g.: Mandira was a doctor, Meera was a lawyer.

I only gave examples from Kyunki, but I think it happens in almost all her soaps.

Oh and then you have Prerna of KZK, who apparently ran a successful business with her husband, but you always saw Mr Bajaj in the board meetings, giving directions and planning takeovers, while Prerna was chasing after one truant child or another.

Given that she sets her serials in urban, affluent India, where a large fraction of women these days juggle career and family, the above prototypes need to change.

i watch that show its great! And it is so true about the whole Housewives thing! In a lot of Ekta's show's the women are the main character's but it's always the men who are dominating the work, office or business or any other proffesion no matter how smart the girl is! It is so unrelaistic when it comes to work and handleing business for women in SERIALS.

I so agree. But 'course, it's only the audience's fault. Most people (including me) 😳 who watch such serials themselves comment on how lame and unrealistic they are, but still continue to watch them.
Many people say television and films are purely for entertainment and should be treated as such. I partly agree, but I also believe that if most women in India, Pakistan and even Afghanistan watch these serials everyday, then they must be influenced by them..! It would be great if these serials have fresh storylines which pertain to issues closer to reality and help in bringing about a positive change in the minds of people, instead of going on and on with the same cliche storylines..
But ofcourse, there's no incentive for Ekta or other producers to change. I mean, they would if people get sick and tired of the same storylines again and again and stop watching these shows. But with the amount of money Ekta's minting with this stuff, why should she stop..?

Okay, over here..this is related to Ekta..but not really related to Kyunki.. People are saying they love "this" show referring to Desperate Housewives. Considering that..this discussion is not related to Kyunki.. so I'm closing this. If you have any questions, feel free to pm me. 😊
