I think the mariagestatus does not end automaticly, because there are much legal things to settle.One has to take legal action first to settle this for good.
If someone is gone missing for eg in war or some other 5 or 7 years than it is easy.

Maybe one can have a saath pheere but it has no legal status. The mariage has to be registred at a courthouse or at the municipal. This is verry important.

In india it is for legal reason not leagally allowed to be married to more than one person at the same time.

If one take a second or more saathphere or nikaa it is not legal. If problems arise there is no mariage (legally) an mostly the women loose out......
