| Smriti is not only acting in the play, she is also its producer | I'm in seventh heaven!" said an excited Smriti Z Iraani as she came back from her stage debut in Ahmedabad. She has acted in the play Kuch Tum Kaho Kuch Hum Kahein with Kyunki… co-star Apara Mehta, directed by Tushar Joshi.
Describing her first ever on-stage act, Iraani said, "I was so nervous in the beginning. The atmosphere is so different from what I have done so far. I was sweating on stage not with the heat but with the fright of performing in front of so many people."
Her main concern was that they hadn't been able to rehearse in advance. "We hadn't been able to do one final rehearsal before the final show. This got me even more worried," she said. However, as the curtains fell, there was thunderous applause and Iraani realised the play was a hit. Image shock
Recalling her entry on stage, she said, "I was wearing a Western outfit — a business suit. Those used to seeing me as Tulsi found it difficult to identify with this woman.
There was actual pin-drop silence as everyone kept trying to figure out who I was. Thankfully, it didn't last long and they soon broke into an cheer as they recognised me."
For Iraani, the biggest compliment came from veteran theatre actor Feroz Bhagat. "When he told me that I had done well, I knew it was for real. I think his comment on my performance is one of the highpoints of my career," she said. Bringing in the moolah
Apart from acting, Iraani is also producing the play, which means she has to keep a check on all the moolah that has been made.
"Being a producer is no joke. I have always respected Shobhaji (Kapoor), but now I have this newfound adoration for her. I think she's one of the coolest producers ever; you never see her stressing out in spite of the staggering number of shows that she handles. I would probably have been tearing my hair out had I been in her place."
Kuch Tum Kaho Kuch Hum Kahein is slated to go on stage in Mumbai sometime in August. Before that, she will hit the road again whenever the call comes.
"The high that theatre gives you is irreplaceable," she exclaims. Warrior princess track
Those following her more mainstream career of Tulsi would have noticed the change in colour that her character has had in recent weeks.
The matriarch of the Virani family has turned into an ass-kicking warrior who will not spare anyone who tries to mess with her.
However, she plays down this role reversal, saying, "Just wait and watch what happens next week. There is a huge twist scheduled to happen in the Virani parivaar." Duty calls
Tulsi will be missing in action at the Star Parivaar Awards. "I am scheduled to go to Goa for election duty so I wont be attending the function. But I shall be there in spirit," she says. tushar.joshi@mid-day.com |
