Balaji bling
He gave Tulsi Virani her mangalsutra
High Fashion, a tiny store in Santacruz Market, claims to light up your favourite television soap characters with its jewels. Screen imitations or the real thing? Your Guide investigates

It will take a while before you spot High Fashion, a tiny jewellery store set in the heart of Santacruz Market. But meandering through the maze of shimmering trinkets and luxurious sari borders will lead you to the treasure trove — one that you thought was limited to rich telly stars. High Fashion owner Rakesh Jain is the hand behind Tulsi's trademark diamond mangalsutra, Rakshanda Khan's R-shaped pendant in Kasamh Se and all the Balaji wedding pieces.
While some might be quick to label his claims as "fibs", fashion stylist for Balaji Telefilms, Nim Sood, confirms: "I have been working with Rakesh for the last 20 years. While he does manufacture specific designs on order, I also pick up bangles, mangalsutras and earrings that he stocks," says Sood. From Rakshanda Khan's jhumkas in Kasamh Se, Riva Bubber's long earrings and Shubhaavi K's small drops in Kyunki, High Fashion has "something for everyone".
Surprisingly, Rakesh does not use his glamorous connections to sell jewellery. "Good designs speak for themselves; I rarely have to lure customers to shop here," he says matter-of-factly. But if you do happen to purchase his latest pink stone earrings or a chunky stone ring, Rakesh might just attach some serial trivia to the price tag. "That pink number was worn by Shubhaavi (Meera in Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi); the ring was a favourite with Sudha Chandran (Ramola in Kahiin Kisi Roz)."
As Balaji's vamps are adorned with garish coloured jewellery, bahus with diamonds and saases with subtlety, Rakesh sees similar trends spilling into real life. "TV actors influence people across age groups and social strata," he declares. While his television jewellery designs are selling like hot cakes, Rakesh is making room on his shelf for Sood's next Balaji venture, Kasturi. "We've stuck to pearl and stones for this show," informs Sood.
Besides television, Rakesh has also been responsible for bedecking film stars. "I've supplied quite a few pieces to Bollywood stylist duo Thea and Pooja, but am clueless as to which films they've been used in," he confesses.
