TV ACTOR RAKSHANDA KHAN

Sleeps for: Not more than five hours
Time: Between 1.30 am and 2 am

There is no ideal time for going to bed. It depends on your personality
- Dr Amita Doshi-Nene
"It's scientifically proven that we require four to six hours of sleep every day," says Dr Amita Doshi-Nene, sleep disorder specialist at the Bombay Hospital.

If you don't get a minimum of six hours sleep daily, the functioning of your brain might be affected, leading to a slower process of thought and understanding.

However, if your lifestyle allows it, Dr Doshi-Nene recommends that you spend eight hours in bed.

The eight-hour myth

"Every individual has a variant sleep pattern. While a minimum of four hours is okay for a healthy person, even eight hours of sleep are not enough for some. It's better to figure out your own sleeping pattern and stick to it," says Dr Doshi-Nene.

Several factors determine how long you should sleep. For instance, we sleep more when we are unwell.

A newborn baby requires 22 hours of sleep daily. It is found that people over 60 can't sleep for more than six hours. After 70, that period is reduced to four hours. This is because the release of chemical mediators called neuro transmitters in the brain lessens with age.

There's no right time to sleep

Those who work at night don't have to worry about health risks just because the world has decided that that's when the human race hits the sack. There is no ideal time for going to bed.

It depends on your personality, profession and preference. There is nothing wrong with reversing your biological clock, and napping in the morning.

Changing patterns

Make sure that you don't make frequent changes in your sleeping pattern. "Follow a fixed time to go to bed every day. Certain professions demand that you sleep when you are done for the day. This can lead to complications such as acidity, mood swings, anger and frustration.

Napping after meals

People who suffer from acidity or digestion problems are advised not to lie down immediately after having a meal. But there is no problem if they doze off in a sitting position. Contrary to popular belief, you are not predisposed to weight gain if you sleep immediately after a meal.

Sleepy corporates causing losses

Reuters: A study conducted by Nihon University School of Medicine in Japan revealed that the country's drowsy corporates are not getting enough sleep. They are causing its economy a loss of about $30 billion a year.

This is because they turn up late for work, take days off and are struggling to stay awake at office, which is all adding up to heavy losses.
