Bobby Darling owes his screen success to Makrand Deshpande. And yet he detests the maverick theatre personality.

"It's ironical but true. I can't stand the sight of Makrand Deshpande. This hatred for him pushed me to make my name in Bollywood," says Bobby. The reason for Bobby's abhorrence is an incident that happened long ago. It made an indelible impact on his mind and motivated him to strive for success.

Sarcastic Makky

"I'd just arrived from Delhi, and wanted to act. I heard that attending theatre workshops would help me to be an actor. So, I ventured forth to Prithvi —- the hub of theatre folks," recalls Bobby.

The actor claims that he met Makrand at the Prithvi cafe and asked him if he could enroll in his Ansh theatre troupe help him gain experience in the stage world.

Says Bobby, "Makrand, in an extremely sarcastic manner, told me there are many other theatre troupes; and just brushed me away. And moreover, when I turned away there was this snigger from him — he was standing with a group of people and they were passing comments and jeering at me."

Gritty Bobby

In true filmi fashion, Bobby made up his mind there and then to be more famous than Makrand. "Today the name Bobby Darling is more known than Makrand Deshpande. Go ask anyone. Makrand's behaviour was extremely shocking, and humiliating for me. He insulted me. I did not expect a person of his calibre to behave in such a manner. And I will never forget this."

This event also led to Bobby never stepping into the world of theatre. "I do get offers to act in plays." But after the incident, I have never stepped into the world of theatre," he claims.

Has he ever bumped into Makrand all these years? "I did once at a film screening. I just stared at him and he, as usual, seemed to be lost in his own world." When asked about the episode Makrand was completely taken aback.

"I don't recall meeting Bobby. There are so many people who come to Prithvi everyday and say they want to be actors. I receive calls from people who claim that they are leaving Mumbai and returning to their hometown because I never gave them a chance! Obviously I will not recall their faces, but they remember me.

All that I can say is that I can only guide people and help them figure out what they are good at. I don't conduct acting workshops," says Makrand who recently staged the children's play, Dhoni Dho Dhalta Hai and was also seen in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. "But if Bobby thinks because of my so-called behaviour he has become successful today — what more can I say?"

'I take offence'

So why is Bobby singling out Makrand? Are not there others who have sniggered at him for his sexuality? "I don't care if a layman passes comments, but when someone like Makrand does it, I take offence."
