Friends,

Here's an article which came in Bombay Times-14,March 2008 regarding the reincarnation track which is hitting the small screen.

BACK FROM THE DEAD!

TV producers are using rebirth instead of time leaps to infuse new life into serials

Times are changing! Earlier, when TRPs of a serial would start dwindling, a time leap would immediately be introduced. Existing actors would become 20 years older (of course, grudgingly) and newer characters were brought in to take the story ahead. But now the situation seems to be slowly changing. Instead of a time leap, rebirth is the latest ploy that producers are using.
Rebirth, which till now was the domain of films, is entering the telly arena in a big way. In
Banoo Main Teri Dulhann, lead characters Vidya and Sagar, essayed by Divyanka Tripathi and Sharad Malhotra respectively, were bumped off and in no time brought back after their supposed rebirth... with background music from Om Shanti Om!
Actors are glad because this trend saves them from ageing prematurely. Being 'reborn' also gives them more scope to perform because invariably, their new characters are different from their previous portrayal. Like in Banoo... Sharad plays a tapori in contrast to his previous rich guy character, and Divyanka plays a bubbly
youngster in contrast to her pativrata, highly emotional character. She's delighted. "Thank God they didn't come up with a time leap. I'm so happy with this track. It's so different from what I was doing earlier," she says. The serial Kumkum that's been on for many years was contemplating a time leap sometime ago. But after the lead character Juhi Parmar reportedly put her foot down and even threatened to quit the show, the producers changed track.Juhi and co-star Hussain Kuwajerwala will now enter the show after their 'rebirth'. Sometime ago the serial Kajjal introduced this twist when lead actors Apoorva Agnihotri and Surveen Chawla decided to opt out of the show. New actors were brought in with the rebirth angle. Of course, this could not salvage the serial and it wrapped up a few months later. Nevertheless, it's better to see actors play their age than use whiteners and play older characters so unconvincingly.
