The night was redolent with the heady beats of Rajasthani folk
music. The air was thick with anticipation. With fervour. With
passion. It had taken them eight months to find each other … eight
long months of anguish, bitterness and pain.

Sumit, resplendent in a white kurta, waited for his Kumkum in the
bedroom that they had never quite shared. Hugging a cushion, smiling
to himself. But where was his beautiful wife? Wasn't she ever going
to come to him?

And all of a sudden, she was there. Stepping out from behind the
ornate dividing screen, Kumkum stood before her eager, adoring
husband. Shy, sweet and hesitant, she was covered in a shawl. With
kajal glistening in her doe-eyes, sindoor on her forehead and her
hair streaming loose, Kumkum was radiant. She had never looked more
lovely.

Sumit turned to look at her and his smile froze. It was as if
someone had kicked him in the solar plexus … knocked the breath out
of him. His jaw fell as he gazed, almost in a trance, at the
dazzling vision in front of him. He rose to his feet, and continued
to stare. She smiled a knowing smile, realising full well the effect
she was having on her besotted husband.

She let the shawl slip … and it fell to her feet.

Sumit was stunned. Dazed. Blown out of his mind. She was wearing the
lacy negligee he had given her. He had hoped to see her wear it. But
never quite thought she would. Overcome by a rush of emotion, he bit
his lips. She smiled. He looked down the length of her lissom body.
Not quite able to believe his eyes. She lowered her gaze … shyly. He
walked towards her … slowly. Continued to stare at her. Like he had
never stared before. With tenderness, with passion, with reverence.
With utter and complete love.

He embraced her. Held her close. Tightly, firmly. Never wanting to
let her go. It was a moment when everything fell into place. When
everything came right. The agony and torment of the last few months
just fell away. Nothing else mattered. No one existed. Just Sumit
and his Kumkum. And their absolute, overpowering, all consuming love
for each other.

The final remnants of the walls came crashing down. It was the point
of no return ...
