According to Karachi-based Rahila Rasheed: "Indian soaps have us hooked with their zabardast storylines." For Rahila's mother-in-law Zubeida Shakoor, Indian serials elicit nostalgia. "Some serials have a strong Gujarati background and remind me of my pre-Partition days in Rajkot," says Zubeida, whose grandson is addicted to "the IAF's fighter planes in Saara Akash." Rahila recounts how Juhi Parmar of Kumkum drew fans when she was in Karachi.
Indian soaps are also setting off fashion trends in Pakistan -- check out Kashish ki baalian, Kumkum ki chudiyaan . "There's even a boutique named after Kashish in my city. These serials are popular here because everyone identifies with saas-bahu squabbles," says Rukhsana Javed of Karachi.
