small talk
Saturday, 9 pm, Colors
Yawn-inducing reality shows are on the rise and channels willing to take responsibility for these are on the rise too. But the makers of Chote Miyan on Colors do not really think so, because this time, they are trying their hand at yet another reality show. After a variety of singing and dance competitions for kids, Colors has come up with a laughter challenge for kids. Thirteen hilarious and talented kids come forward to entertain you as they try to outsmart each other with new gags, jokes and unique standup acts. Each week, they will try and entertain audiences to the best of their abilities. Each week, the ones who are successful in their endeavour will proceed to the next round and the one who is not up to the mark will be eliminated by the jury.
The show is judged by the versatile Sachin Pilgaonkar and the controversial Rahul Mahajan. The contestants are between the age of six and 14 and they are all hoping to make a mark in the world of television entertainment. Juhi Parmar and Kapil Sharma, the two known faces on television, have been roped in as judges to host this show, which not only has kid contestants, but is juvenile in nature too.
Earlier, we had fancy dress and mock press competitions in school. Now children simply head to one of the talent-hunt shows on television. Such is the power of television these days that people of different ages get to be on the small screen. A few of the kids are exceptionally talented, dishing out dialogues like they have been trained by a film training institute.
The hosts need training in diction and presentation. While Juhi cannot get over her Kumkum hangover, Kapil comes across as a nervous wreck. The judges are another funny lot. While Sachin's philosophy on life and his advice on comedy makes you wonder if he is that big a star, Rahul's silly smile is a complete put-off. Rahul does not have any advice to offer, ever. The only thing he says is "Bahut achche, very good", which get plain monotonous. As for the gags, although they are original, they tend to get boring and are poorly executed.
VERDICT:
If you are not looking for intellectual stimulation, this show is just right. It is humorous in parts.
