Chapter 6
"What? What did you say?", he rushed with words in a surprised voice.
"I am not that bad. I could manage to make coffee", he said politely.
"Okay. That's good."
"But..."
She looked at him but couldn't know what he was trying to say. She realized that maybe her inviting him to her home would have made it awkward for him.
"I don't know why I said so. I am sorry. Just forget that I invited you...", she started blabbering as she herself didn't know why she invited him.
"You don't even know me"
"Huh?", she stopped her talks when he started talking.
"You really trust me enough to take to your home?"
"You didn't know me when you saw me in pain. But still you thought to help me. Trust doesn't depend on how long people know each other. It's about how genuine they are with each other."
He didn't expect such an answer.
"I am Pragya. Thought you should know my name if you're coming to my home.", she said to break the ice.
"Abhishek but people call me Abhi"
"So...?", she stretched the word expecting an answer from him before leaving to her home.
"So?"
Pragya was silent. She didn't plant to invite him home but then since the words had already come out of her mouth, it didn't seem to be a bad idea. He was all alone. He didn't look like he was drinking. Maybe he was getting better. She didn't know how and why but the fact is he made her feel better. He did what those countless hours of crying and roaming aimlessly couldn't do. She felt that she should return the favour.
"You're sure? You are really inviting me to your place?", his voice broke her thoughts.
"My mom wanted to know about the friend I met yesterday", her mentioning the word friend' was a pleasant surprise to him.
"Friends?", he extended his hand with a smile.
"Friends", she patted his hand like a high five.
***
"This way", she pointed to the street in the right.
As she saw his face having a tired expression, she said, "I am sorry. I am making you walk too much"
"No, nothing like that. I was just wondering about you.", he replied.
"Me?"
"You walk so long everyday?"
"Everyday?"
"The first day, you were crying near my home. Then you came to see me another day and then today, you came to return the umbrella. It seems you walk such distances regularly"
"I don't walk like this everyday but I love walking"
"Hmm"
"My mom says that when I was a kid, I used to smile at everyone on the street while walking. As I grew up, she was sort of worried that whether I will land into trouble because of this smiling habit. She used to warn me not to smile at strangers everyday before going to school."
"Ha ha then I guess you would have started observing people on the road as you grew up"
"No. I don't see people in the road. In fact, sometimes I don't know whether the road is crowded or lonely because I get lost in thoughts. Walking is my favourite stress buster because it keeps me away from distractions. I could be with just myself when I walk. Whenever I get sad or confused, walking is my first way out", she stopped as realized she had talked much more than she intended to.
"You're opposite to me", he said.
"Meaning?"
"I hate walking. It's so boring and tiring in my opinion."
"Hmm"
As her mother looked out of the window, she saw her daughter walking towards home with a guy. She wondered who it was.
"Here's my home"
"Destination arrived", he said smiling in between his heavy breaths holding his knees.
She saw her mom near the door giving a suspicious look.
As they went inside, she introduced her mom to him and vice versa. She asked about her dad to which her mom replied that he has went to their farm.
She made him be seated in the living room and followed her mom to the kitchen as she went to make a coffee.
Her mom switched on the stove and was placing the milk pan on it as she leaned over the kitchen counter.
"Who's this friend? You haven't mentioned his name before and I haven't seen him before too..."
It was on the tip of her tongue. She so wanted to tell what happened and how she actually met him, why she brought him here etc. But she knew how her mom would react if she told her all that. Her mom might freak out that she had called a stranger to home. It's true, she didn't know him much. To be precise, she didn't even know his name until few hours ago. But he was not a mere stranger. On top of every other reason, she wanted him to feel better and that was why she took him to her home. She didn't want his visit to be a bitter experience because of her mom's reaction.
"Maa", she paused to hold her mom's hand, "His mom died few days ago. I thought it would be better if I brought him here as he might feel lonely at home."
Her mom felt proud for a second that her daughter was thinking about someone else's pain when she herself was in pain. She caressed her face and nodded in agreement. The question of how he became Pragya's friend and how she or her dad didn't know it till then skipped out of her mind as she made the coffee and took it to the living room where Abhi was waiting.
"Coffee is too good Aunty", he said sipping the coffee.
"You don't like it?", her mom said. He looked at Pragya's face and Pragya looked at him as both didn't understand her mom's reply.
"Aunty, I said coffee is good"
"But your face says something else"
He didn't know what to say.
"How did Aunty know I didn't like the coffee?", was the only thought running in his mind.
"Your face when you sipped the coffee said it all", her mom said.
"Aunty, you know mind reading?", he said in a serious tone.
Abhi and her mom started laughing while Pragya was wondering why were they laughing.
The laughter stopped when they saw Pragya's dad entering the home.
"Here, her dad has come"
Abhi stood up from his sofa automatically and her dad asked him to sit.
Before he could ask who he was, her mom introduced him as Pragya's friend.
"Friend?"
"Haan. Friend"
"I haven't seen you before"
"Arrey why are you asking lot of questions like he did something wrong?"
"I was just asking him. I haven't seen him before. Is it wrong?"
"As if you know all of her friends..."
"Oh you know all of them? You don't know anyone except Purab"
"Aunty!", he tried to call him but Pragya who was sitting in the nearby sofa stopped him.
"They're fighting because of me", he whispered.
"Not because of you", she said.
"It started..."
"Mr.Abhi. My parents don't need a reason to argue everyday. So don't feel bad. They would have started arguing even if you hadn't come here."
"So you just sit and watch while they fight?", he asked her while being surprised at her cool attitude.
"What can I do?"
"I can't believe you're a married woman. You're behaving carefree like a kid."
"What does me being married has to do anything with this?"
"Because married women are responsible"
"Who said?"
"I know. I have seen my mom."
"Wait, how does it make me irresponsible if I don't stop their fight?"
"You're being an irresponsible daughter."
"I am being matured. That's why I don't indulge in elders' matters."
"See I told you that you're behaving like a kid. You accepted it by saying elders' matters"
Pragya was about to say something but stopped when she felt her parents eyes on them.
Both of them felt embarrassed as her parents saw them fighting.
"See", her mom said while her dad shrugged.
"Because of you! Because of you they're fighting", her mom blamed her dad.
"Me? It was you"
"Mom! Dad! We have a guest at home.", said Pragya as she got up.
Abhi had a good time with Pragya's parents as they had lunch together and spent some time chatting about his life, education etc. in the lawn.
Just when Abhi was about to leave, Pragya's dad received a call from his manager.
"I am sorry", he mouthed at Pragya who was few metres away.
"For what?", she gestured at him.
Sign language was making him impatient so he walked to her and sat on the bench on which she was sitting.
"I am sorry for what I said"
"I don't get you"
"When you parents were arguing, I told you're irresponsible na. I am sorry"
"Its okay. I am also sorry. It sounds so silly that I argued with you"
"Its just that I haven't seen my dad and mom argue so I thought its something serious"
"Your parents don't fight? You're blessed then"
"My dad left my mom when I was a kid. I haven't really seen him much"
"I am sorry", she said.
