Hiding the truth is putting himself first. Because it is his truth. Ultimately he was scared he will lose his Daadi. The reason why Pragya did all that pretending bad drama before she left and had an accident is because ofcourse to get them accept you know who but at the same time she wanted Daadi to be atleast cordial with Abhi before she left even though it came out by accident and the wrong way she still maintained that. Yes part of it was him scared of losing Pragya but the rest was for Daadi. He was thinking about his feelings first. Even when he went to Sarlaa Maa on the accident day, he was like yes I am proud of her as a friend. Why did he not say as a wife?! I personally feel she did beyond more than a wife who stood by him to go on the right lane according to both of them at that time. You know why he said friend and not a wife, because she rejected him. So that's about his feelings again. Being a wife only doesn't mean papers and rituals, according to him they are divorced but he still could have said wife as he does see her as his, and when she did that proud work according to him and Sarla Maa and many viewers, she was his wife at that time. Now the Sarla Maa incident, he was sooo eager to know about putting hands together deed. Like dude wait few days concentrate on the main thing, Sarlaa Maa's health and the one who kidnapped and attacked her. That was ultimately his first instant reaction but alas he realized he did a blunder there so that's good on him. There's many more. This is how I see things. I don't expect you to. But I don't want to go on and I would not like to think about negative stuff much, not my cup of tea. If I want to take a micky out of them sometimes I can do. I see them as mine.
