kumkum?

kumkum bhagaya ka matlab kya hai😳?

it's the name of the marriage hall owned & operated by pragya's mother

it also means something like 'destiny of marriage'...like there is kumkum from marriage in pragya's/bulbul's bhagya, but in whose name and under what circumstances? that's what the story will tell.

Kumkum bhagya literally means the luck one begets from the kumkum or sindhoor that the husband fills his wife's maang with on their wedding day. So, kumkum bhagya figuratively stands for the destiny or luck attached to your marriage, could be good or bad. As in India most marriages were arranged, the luck that came with marrying into a different household was usually a coin toss as far as happiness was concerned. If your kumkum bhagya was good, you would end up happy with your husband and his family. If the bhagya was bad, you could end up with a jerk of a husband or an evil sasooral or be plagued by other troubles in married life.

So far, Pragya's kumkum bhagya is not looking good. Of course, we all know it will change for the very best by the time the show is done.

Oooh thank you for this! It really makes sense. I think I had the grammar wrong in my head. The bhagya to go with your kumkum, not necessarily the kumkum in your bhagya 😆

my i thought kumkum bhagya in this show means the Bhagya to get married or have a marriage , bhagya mein kumkum likha hai types ?

It does in a sense. Kumkum bhagya means the luck or destiny that one has in regards to kumkum or sindhoor. If one has no kumkum bhagya, it could mean no marriage at all or a bad marriage or a married life plagued with troubles. If one has good kumkum bhagya one is blessed with a good husband and all the attendant good luck, a good sasural, children, prosperity and health.

You are so right. It is a throwback to when almost all married women in India did believe in the power of sindhoor. Not wearing it meant courting bad luck as the belief was it would cut short the husband's life. In these days, women don't follow the practice but I guess the phrase, kumkum bhagya, still does linger on.
