Forget about social message. It's made to make money. Not with a cause. Sadly they don't have that social responsibility. So are our regular bollywood movies! Even worse actually...

I still don't understand why makers make such regressive serials whereas in real life in india a large number of women work and there are no similar issues as they show in serials. I haven't met any people who got married to take revenge and who kept taking bullshit just so the parents won't have a heart attack. I switched to Zindagi which is showing a very real portrayal of how relationships could be.

From the few serials that I have watched or read updates on occasion, I have come to realize that
1) Its all a business for serial producers and TV channels.
2) A highly viewed show attracts advertising revenue.
3) A TV channel will commission a serial from a production house and keep the serial on air as long as revenue is generated.
4) Apparently the Indian viewers love these "proved and tested regressive story lines". Viewers actually tune in to watch the serial when such drama or storylines are shown.
5) The Indian population is very large and there is a huge population that supports the viewership of Indian serials. Some for time pass, some lovers of 'distress of others' , some just for drama , escape from mundane real life, some hopeful romantic idealists who live for insignificant romantic gestures between protagonists. Though the only real union of lead pairs occurs at the end of the serial before it goes off air and some purely for discussion sake with friends and family.

The sad part is that prolonged exposure to such serials has long term effects on the mentality of the viewers. They come to believe its real characters and some behaviours seen on TV become acceptable.

6) Serials are not used as a teaching or reaching out media. It doesn't generate enough revenue to stay on air.

If you were a business person out to make a profit and this is a formula that generates revenue, what would you do? Its all about money, money, money.

But for whatever reasons for watching, members of IF who come to this forum like to discuss and express their opinions and interact with each other. Some feel euphoria others disgust. No one if wrong and no one is right. Everyone has their niche and find their own circle of friends.

Happy watching, reading and discussing.

Thanks! That was very well put.

It's all about TRP and money. Ekta Kapoor is a business woman, not a social servant. Can't blame her, today the society is very capitalist. Everyone is like that whether it's TV, cinema or industry.

I can tell you one effect I have noticed in my family back home. The women do dress up almost like these soap heroines these days and make a big deal out on Karvachauth and all these celebrations.

I guess it is best to take it as entertainment than anything. As long as one knows it's reel and not real, it's fine. The problem is when people start to believe what is shown on these shows.

I completely agree with u too
Like all the characters you mentioned are just bunch of idiots.
Pragya- education for no good. Like she is still a gawar
Abhi- complete loser... Only shows off about his money and all
Bulbul- more idiot ... Instead of clearing everything she is taking the silent path
Sarla- OMG ... Like Pragya is all suffering because of her. If Pragya was not able to get married or now her marriage turned out to be unsuccessful . She should encourage her daughter instead and tell her to move on in life. And tell her that MARRIAGE IS NOT everything. U can enjoy your life in other ways.

The characters in this show are a really big fail. Like their thoughts and actions. But it's just a show. So I think I shouldn't mind. We only watch it for fun. And if the characters weren't idiots everything would have cellared and the show would have ended :)
