Hmm well I think what I like about KB isn't really new, but it does feel different compared to the serials I have followed over the last few years. I am not super familiar with Ekta Kapoor's canon so maybe that's why the premise of KB seems somewhat fresh to me?

What I like about the show comes down to the lead characters. Pragya seems to have the potential to be more assertive, vocal and self-confident than the usual heroines. She has married Abhi for her mother's sake, but otherwise she has stood up for what was right for her. She definitely has that strong self-sacrificing tendency that heroines are more or less required to have, but I am hoping that as she begins to face the challenges of life with the Mehras, she will show some of that toughness of character she has had so far. Too much to hope??

As for Abhi, I like his internal conflict - he's out for revenge but only for the sake of his loved ones (Aaliya, Purab) and he seems to have a grounded, sensible side that is prodding him to not act like an idiot. I am also interested in his experience of dealing with fame and riches while still feeling like a boy from a humble background. Of course Abhi keeps ignoring / being convinced to ignore that better side I think he has, so maybe he too will end up as one of the frustrating, simple-minded, foolish male leads that are so popular on these shows...

I guess the main thing is, it's still early days for KB, and it has the potential to be new and different. Whether or not it devolves into more of the same will become clear as the plotlines unfold...

Have you seen Kayamath? Abhi is a sophisticated and suave version of rustic Milind. Same misunderstandings, wedding, hate marriage, then falling flat in love.😆
Pragya is different than Milind's wife in that soap. I am liking that much.

Nope tiaradeol I haven't seen that! But if the characters and setting are different, that's surely enough to justify a new show despite the identical plot 😆

😆 Well, well.
There the girl was rich, but here it's the boy! So, that's different! Hahaaa.

I am curious to see how Shabbir will make Abhi different from Milind given he is the one representing both. But I can already see similar scenes coming up.

Well KB is the first Ekta serial I am following. I have seen bits & pieces of Ekta's past Zee works & "Kaise Ye Pyar Hai.

If there is any show on Zee that is not like a typical Zee serial it's this one. It's not about one main couple & a bunch of people trying to separate this one main couple over & over again & then this couple tries to overcome their efforts over & over again. Although KB might end up having to do with whatever I just describe in the future 😕. Anyways, KB is also not about ending up w/the first guy u fall for unlike most Zee serials. Pragya ending up w/Abhi even though Suresh is the first guy she fell for is a new concept for Zee. Even though only some people end up w/the very first guy/girl they fall for in reality, Zee serials have a fixation on the phela Pyar. Another thing it gets into is a friendship between a man & a woman. Usually, on a Zee serial, they'll show either the main herione not have any friends or she has friends but they're all girls.

I honestly am not that into a lot of Ekta's works, in fact, I usually just watch bits & pieces her shows. "Kumkum Bhagya" is the exception because I am actually following this show- watching every episode from beginning to end & I am already seeing differences between KB & her other Zee works. In fact, I told my sister that I think she playing it more safe w/KB than her previous Zee works w/having the show have 3 main heroes rather than one main hero. I notice that the show tends to go the more nauseating route when she mainly focuses on one main hero. In "Astitva Ek Prem Kahani", all three women liked Abhi & even though Simran was the main heroine on the show & she was one of these women, he ended having a kid with each of these women & he cheated on Simran during their marriage w/one of them😲. In "Kasam Se", the main hero was Jai Walia, & well the writing got quite atrocious w/the Bani (main heroine)-Jai-Pia triangle, & although the writing was overall less atrocious w/the Purvi-Arjun-Ovi triangle on "Pavitra Rishta", I ended up having issues w/both pairs, Arjun-Purvi and Arjun-Ovi for different reasons so in conclusion I am glad that KB is more like an American show & less like her past works, focusing on more than one hero, even if it means seeing different amounts of the 3 heroes in different episodes since even on American shows, u won't see all the heroes have equal screen space in every single episode. Enough w/more than one woman liking the same guy business & the romantic element of the show mainly focusing on this one guy & all the women who like him. Our dear KB is not like this so I am gonna give this show a big 🤗 because of this and because I have a feeling Ekta is gonna stick w/her story.

Another thing that is makin' this show stand out is the character of Suresh.

I just wanna let this out right now regarding this post. First of all, I find Suresh quite cute lookin' but I feel the specs & the glasses make him look older. I feel naturally he looks more youthful looking than Jai Walia (Kasam Se) & Raghav Singania (Ek Mutthi Aasmaan). If he took off the specs & shaved his mustache, he would have more of a softer look & look more handsome & younger looking. He is definately not the typical Zee hero. It's high time a Zee serial focuses on less conventional men. There was a time when I felt like in pretty much every Zee serial, the main hero was a rich businessman born w/a silverspoon in his mouth. I remember really liking Manav when "Pavitra Rishta" started because he seemed so off of what I was used to seeing & I remember my sister saying wow finally an Indian serial where the guy isn't rich 😆. He was a simple, poor mechanic who was such a sweetipie & I could see why Archana fell for him even w/seeing his face w/grease on it 😊. W/Suresh I am getting this refreshing feeling again, probably more of it this time since Zee is finally focusing on the more geeky type of guy. Suresh is not perfect but a lot of characters on TV are not perfect whether they look like hot studs or not. I think one of the things that sets Suresh apart from a lot of other serial heroes especially a lot of Zee heroes is that w/a lot of these heroes one wants the guy to soften up when it comes to love but w/Suresh I feel more of the opposite w/him. I want him to become more tough. On a lot of Zee shows there's talk about how the girl should become stronger but there are times in real life when a man should become stronger & give more importance to himself. I want to see Suresh be more gutsy when it comes to romance. I want to see him become stronger & give more importance to himself. I kinda know what it's like. I was the more reserved, unstylish girl w/specs growing up & when it came to romance, I wouldn't give much importance to it. I usually wouldn't try to pursue who ever I fell for even though I knew a wanted to experience genuine, romantic love. In fact, it was only in late twenties where I became more gutsy.

I only realized this not to long ago but u know what usually happens on Zee serials when he/she likes someone (usually a main heroine/her) but they don't like them back, especially if this is the case for a longer time or the whole rest of the show...

Either one out of these 3 things happen to the he/she I am talkin' about

a. this he/she eventually becomes a negative character

or

b. he/she ends up w/someone else

or

c. eventually he/she gets killed off

I wanna see the he/she which in this show is Suresh not fall under a, b, or c. I wanna see something different where that person who has liked u all this time in the romantic sense but u never have liked them like this in the past or u have felt that u like them in this sense at least a little but ignored those feelings due to various reasons... Anyways, I wanna see the person which he/she likes be w/the person they like which in this case is Bulbul & for the love between them to turn into a mutual love & for them to have their happily ever after. Anyways, there's more of a chance I will end up seeing whatever I explained in this post w/Surul. So if Bulbul ends up w/Suresh well, this show will certainly be different since I didn't see a, b, or c. 😃.

Hi i agree 100 with the thread maker. The only thing I'd add is: in every serial there will be this snooty, horrid m-i-l or s-i-l who will hold her nose and scoff at the middle-class bahu and her lack of class and etiquette. The heroine will light diyas and sing bhajans and go about in silk sarees oblivious of all the mocking going on.

I actually despair of EK and what she has done to our TV and to India's beautiful diversity -- some of which you can still see on doordarshan.

Every EK heroine looks the same regardless of which region she comes from. Tons of sindoor and the mile long mangalsutra have become the norm for the Indian bride. So much so the new generation of viewers simply does not understand the regional variations in culture.

There is no mangalsutra in punjab, rajasthan, UP and bengal. But Ekta's bride will wear all the marital symbols from all the regions. This has been internalised to an extent where people think it is odd for a bride to look different

When balika vadhu had brides without the mangalsutra, viewers were aghast, not realising that the serial was being authentic.

We had such subtle, layered story-telling , all of which have given way to ear-splitting BG music, circular camera action and black and white freeze shots. Vamps come accompanied by her own BG music so we know she is the vamp.

Feel sad for myself that every soap is following the trend. She has pushed us behind by two generations. She has made us regressive when bollywood is being so experimental.

👏 👏 👏

I wholeheartedly agree. Especually regarding the lack of thought to regional variations. Oh, sure there are serials set in different regions, or with the families from a certain region. But the women, no matter if mangalsutra or sindoor are commonly worn or not, the wives are decked out in whole lot of sindoor and a long mangalsutra. And it's not just in Ekta soaps, but in other soaps as well. No thought that sindoor is not worn in this setting/culture, or mangalsutra is not worn.

I am glad at least now makers and shows are trying to move away and try something different. But as long as they don't have the gumption to tell a finite story, the same old bakwas and regressive era Ekta brought in with her daily infinite format over a decade ago (mega-serials they were called back then) will continue in television.
