Hi All,

I'm a silent reader on this forum and thought I'd make a topic today. I would like to make it clear that I am not trying to offend or belittle anyone's beliefs here. The thoughts expressed here are my own and for the purposes of a healthy discussion. So here goes!

I'm noticing this trend of showing horoscope matching of prospective brides and grooms on shows more frequently of late. It was shown on KumKum Bhagya today and also Aur Pyar Ho Gaya.

My thoughts are these - how relevant is this ritual/tradition? I know many people have full faith in this and even consider it to be a science. I don't know how accurate it is - i think there are very few people who can read horoscopes or do the calculations which can give you an idea of when good or bad times will be in a lifetime - but those people are so few and far between that it becomes really difficult to trust those who run the numbers or do the readings.

In any case - I can understand how in the olden days people would resort to such methods to select partners in an arranged marriage setting as it would be a way to short list or select a prospective. In our generation I find it regressive that families still do this - not only do they do this but they use this as grounds to cancel marriages. Especially so in instances where the prospective bride and groom are in a relationship and want to live their lives together - parents will get their horoscopes matched and find something amiss and use that as grounds to not allow the pair to get married.

What I would like to discuss is how relevant or accurate is this process? If you love someone and your family gets the horoscopes matched and they do not match then what? Do you sacrifice your love over an intangible or do you stand by your commitment and live your life? Why do people still insist on getting horoscopes matched? No one knows what will happen tomorrow so do you forfeit a love based on an abstract reason? There are so many instances where people will get their horoscopes matched - get married and are miserable - there is no compatibility between the married couple. Similarly there are so many instances where people will not match their horoscopes and live a very happy life. Either way marriage is a risk - there are no guarantees - it's really upto the bride and groom to make the most of it or part ways if they are incompatible.

Lol I see you talked about this logically so I agree with you but I know that in KB it was shown that these people are traditional enough to believe in this ritual and consider the horoscope matching a tradition especially during arrange marriages. This gives them peace that the person they are choosing for their children is correct for them. Thats why its important to parents. They can't know a person in few meeting so they believe that this ritual will tell them how they will be. However, if two people are in love and decided to marry than the results even though important for parents will become irrelevant for their children's happiness. KB showed that Suresh cares about Pragya but loves her sister Bulbul thats why its important to show that the marriage between them isn't likely to be happy. It gives people something to think about.

Still... I loved how they showed Pragya and Abhi's horoscope match 35 out of 36. It just seems god supports their love and relationship. It was sooo romantic!!!

I believe in all this ❤️. I feel every tradition like this has some basis to it.

But, answering your question, I won't cancel my marriage just for that if I've known and been in a relationship with the guy I'm marrying and will rather wait and see what happens.

Don't find it regressive. To each his own!

It is absolutely regressive- in fact a lot of things in these shows are. It is not scientific and of course pandits do make bucks out of it. It's their living after all. I think a part of the target audience of these soaps believe in such stuff. Especially the older generation women and men do indulge in such things. I think when you have to get your son or daughter married off to a stranger, the astrology, kundali etc give some satisfaction that you did the right thing. Arranged marriages are still a fact in the country. Children are not raised with independent/questioning minds so many times they just go by what elders say. Even if they try to find their own partners (for which they are not encouraged), it would be a battle to get married to them. Sad is when they get forced to marry someone else for kundali reasons or for caste, subcaste etc (which are even more serious evils).

No wonder these kundalis during matchmaking are a part of our society given their is so much superstition and blind beliefs around. What Ekta is doing is taking advantage of this emotion to sell her stuff and earn money (just like Abhi said he sells love!). I think the younger and more educated (not just literate when I say that) generation also watches these soap for the romance factor they throw in or for some good performances. I personally don't agree or connect with 80% of what they show. I watch it as a time off from a busy, hectic life and for my favourtie actors.

Well I really don't believe in anything like this because I am a Muslim. And in Islam no one can tell the future except Allah. Nobody...

Even if we hear something from the fortune tellers we laugh and assume its all fake.

It's about belief. And we are no one to comment on someone's belief. And this is not something new it's going on through ages and many people still believe in it. You may think that only illerate and superstitious people believe in it; but that is not true there are a lot of educated people today who still believe in it. Horoscope Matchmaking is something we cannot prove but it is there.

I've heard of Indian people still doing all this horoscope matching so I don't mind this being shown in this show but other than what I have said so far, I really don't have too much to say other than maybe the people who never got their horscopes matched, well, their horoscopes actually do match more, they just never bothered to go through w/the process of physically matching them up 😊. Anyways, if one is gonna go through w/matching up horoscopes then they better be more careful & go to someone who is legit because I was told that there are more frauds now days when it comes to people who practice astrology 😕.

I don't tell I will not believe in these rituals. I do believe them but at certain times I won't..!!!
This is the custom that's been followed since centuries.I don't think it is superstitious but yeah certainly the belief of people which is like a continuous process..!!

I dunno how significant this plays a role in ones life, but yeah it's wat the tradition says..! :))
