Many years ago, as a young kid, I used to be a huge fan of the Kamal Hassan - Sridevi pairing. ...I actually thought they were a pair in real life too...
Wen my daughter was a kid, she used to love the SRK - Kajol pairing...such was her love that she had an intense dislike for Ajay Devgan...she thought he had somehow come in between them 😆
The point I am trying to make is till just a few years ago, there was no social media...all we knew about stars and their personal lives was through scandal sheets...in most homes, these magazines were anyway banned...so, we lived in an illusory world where the couples we loved on screen lived in bliss off screen too...in the sense that we continued to write their love stories in our heads...
Today, thanks to the social media, the personal lives of actors are laid bare to us...you don't need to read scandal sheets..stars offer you the details themselves on.twitter and FB...
So, does this make a difference to you? Would you prefer to retain your mental images of your favourite on screen couples and not be bombarded by images from their private lives...does it make any difference to your viewing pleasure or your ability to lose yourself to the magic of an onscreen pairing...when you have been freshly exposed to off screen images...
I ask this question because this became a big point of debate on another forum...the fans bitterly complained that the lead should keep his private life private...and leave them alone to enjoy the bliss of his onscreen pairing with the female lead...they preferred to be allowed to live in a state of delusion...
This is grossly unfair to the star...it is his personal life after all...his relationship with his wife that he is flaunting...how can the fans dictate to him on what he can or cannot do...this is the other side to the argument...
But, given that their images and careers are dependent on the love of their fans, should stars keep their private lives private...and not flaunt them...the question becomes all the more important in the case of TV pairs...a film ends in two hours after all...but a soap goes on for years and years...so, the need to protect the on screen magic is perhaps more..
Twitter and FB are here to stay...I don't think we can go back to an era when stars lived in their ivory towers,,,and yet, would you have preferred they stayed there...or is today's audience mature enough to enjoy the off screen images of their favourite stars and still be lost in the magic of their on screen pairings?
