Why does it mean so much?

Thank you Ariyadasa...you may not know it but your post inspired this...

I know the end of any and every show spells heartbreak for its fans...the clamour for a Season 2 always erupts...nothing new there..

Yet, KTLK has not been a usual soap...at least it did not start out that way...it has had a tumultuous journey, seen many ups and downs, been plagued by one constraint too many...and yet the fact remains that this show has had deeply touching moments too,,,magical moments that have made it possible to digest even the worst.

Given this, I thought it would be interesting to answer a question here..

Why does this show mean so much to you? Why do you love it so much? I already had a poll on most hated moments. Feedback includes both positive and negative. So, what was this wonderful quality of the show that kept you captivated all along? I am not talking about actors, their chemistry or the romance. I am asking you to go beyond that, I am asking for core values of the show, core elements that made it what it is!

Let me make a beginning!

The biggest reason why the show kept me interested for the most part was its attempt to explore human relationships and emotions in a subtle, realistic fashion. The characterizations were not over the top. They seemed like you and me! Instead of focusing on mundane kitchen politics, the mainstay of most shows, this one attempted to look at finer emotions, complex relationships and and even some really relevant social issues. It may not have wholly succeeded, it could have done so much more and yet, the fact remains that it tried. You got to give it to them for at least trying when most people would prefer to play it safe. That in itself is a big thing in today's context.

I know that TV is all about women but after a very, very long time, here was a male character that actually had depth and complexity. He was gloriously imperfect and contradictory, not painted in monochromatic shades.Just today, TOI carries a report on that universally loved literary hero, Mr Darcy. Women across generations have voted him as their most favourite character ever. Ashutosh is no Mr Darcy and yet he ranks up there with him for me. The character caught my fancy, fired my imagination as no TV character has done in recent times. He compelled me to love him, to look at the story's events from his perspective and to root for him all the time.

Nidhi, in my opinion, is the character that the writers have been most unfair to. The character had so much potential as those who have seen DK will agree. Yet, in KTLK, they just did not let her grow and flourish the way she ought to have. She could have been so much more and yet, they did not let her achieve what she could have. That is truly a pity. And yet, she was a spunky, cheerful girl and fighting spirit was her best character trait as I saw it.

I know that this show is about Ashutosh and Nidhi, Yet two other characters made me cry for them. One was Mallika on her wedding day. She made me cry for what she could have been, for how she had allowed her life to be ruined by unrequited love, how a sophisticated and dignified woman had allowed her obsession to turn her into a scheming shrew who was devoid of compassion! Although, Mallika as a character was mercilessly butchered eventually, I still recall that sophisticated woman of Episode 1. She was a woman of class who was unfortunately stripped of it.

The other character was Khushi. I know people cried on account of Khushi and not for her. But that moment when she asked Ashutosh to surgically reduce the size of her stomach, she said it with the innocence of a child. It was not a calculated move intended to have maximum impact. In that moment, she became the face of the hundreds of thousands of abandoned and orphaned children across the world who are denied of their right to basic sustenance. She made me feel for them all, my tears and and sense of helplessness and anger was for them all.

In essence, while it was not a neo-realist masterpiece and was essentially just a feel-good show, KTLk did show glimpses of very real and raw emotion. Granted they were not pretty or even appealing and yet, they were honest for the most part!

So, it is a thank you from my side to the KTLK team for keeping things real for the most part, barring all the lack of medical and other logic. Thank you for touching a deep chord within me, for leaving me with lingering memories of beautiful moments. Thank you for giving me yet another fictional hero to fall in love with! One who still seemed so real that I almost reached out to touch him!

That's about it from me! Hope to hear your reasons and thoughts too!

A few days back, some one else also asked me the same question Sujatha. I am copy pasting a part of my reply here.

This story had the ability to turn an ordinary cup of ginger tea into a grand gesture of romance. It had the ability to bring a smile on a person stuck in a traffic jam because she remembers Dr Ashutosh looking at Dr Nidhi and saying, "you know quite honestly, agar yeh traffic jam kabhi NA bhi khatm ho I am quite happy. Mujhe koi afsors nahi hoga!" It had the ability to turn busy doctors into avid serial watchers. They literally took a break in their work schedule to watch the serial when it was running at the 8 pm slot. I remember there was once a poll conducted in the forum regarding who is in what profession and so many members turned out to be doctors. Every dialogue, every emotion, every minute expression of the characters were stored in our memory. Writers of the serial looked upon the viewers on FB and Twitter to remind them of events in the serial. 25th July – Ashutosh and Baba's birthday, 18th September – Nidhi's birthday, 9th May – AshNi wedding Anniversary. None of these dates were explicitly mentioned in the serial at any point of time. A one liner in one episode and that was that. But the viewers remembered. We not only remembered, we reminded the KTLK team and made sure the occasions were celebrated in style.

KTLK is a serial with a different unique story that touched the heart strings of many people. And irrespective of what the TRP says or does not say, that is a fact. It had the ability to raise the topics and debate on sensitive sensible issues like male-female friendship after marriage, surrogacy, adoption, infertility, career Vs motherhood..what not! It made us think. It made us talk. It made us react. It made us change our thought process.

And on a personal note, it brought beautiful friends into my life!!

Yes Ruchita...when I think of Khushi, I recall only this moment,,,because thereafter, the character went for a toss...she was unnecessarily turned into a mini vamp...I am sorry to have to use such language for a child...but that is what happened!

While you have put it differently, you are saying pretty much the same thing too, Suja...the beauty in the mundane and the real...that has been the show's mainstay...the scene that you refer to...or the scene where Ashutosh mutters to himself about how both Nidhi and he are burning up in the fires of love/ desire...or even where Ashutosh picks a gulab jamun piece and puts it into his mouth in such a causal and yet intimate gesture...these scenes rank way above all the song and dance sequences put together...simply because they were all real!

Edit - On the doctors...I guess that is natural...they were willing to overlook all the lack of medical logic because suddenly their mundane life seemed fraught with romantic possibilities 😆

First of all I am so proud that my post inspired you , I respect u a lot sujatha ji as I believe u are one of the great writers in the Forum .

This is the real answer for my question which I asked my self? Why I love this show much

Let me start like this , I was not a serial addicted person even from my school days , I feel all these serials shows unrealistic situations which can named as only soap operas according to my dictionary . but one day I just watched a scene of KTLK ( Where Nidi find Ashu in the village- hospital ,the first appearance of Sk ) Day by day this show became a part of my life I start watching the previous epi finding information about the story ,IF played a main role in this process.

The reason behind all these nothing else it's a unique story which have its own identity .Specially I love the character Ashu so much, His good looking, Professionalism, good humanism, Best hubby to Nidi and loving son for his father, attractive me a lot. There were lots of loving scenes which I love to see again& again in KLTK

KTLK became a medicine for my stress life. I got a bigger relief after watching KTLK. But still I don't know how I can manage my life without KTLK as this story ,characters became part of my life . Hope god will never punish me as he gave every thing for me up to now. So awaiting till season 2 starts.

Thanks for your kind words...but believe me, I don't think anyone is greater than the other here...we all find different ways of expressing ourselves and our thoughts on a show that has touched us in different ways..

Anyway, this post is actually as much for the show as it is for people like you who feel so much of love and passion for the show...who have no vested interests whatsoever, nothing whatsoer to gain...except the sheer pleasure of watching your favourite show again...I truly hope that the channel, the makers and the actors appreciate the kind of love and dedication you are showering on them...something that deserves to be acknowledged with a bowed head and folded hands...I hope they at least respond positively to your request...and come up with a Season 2 where all the issues that plagued Season 1 are addressed...

Good luck to you, Ariyadasa...God bless!

Sujatha, beautiful post, truly you're a gifted writer!! god how much i have missed your posts over the last few months. You have beautifully worded everything, i'm short of words to add any. Complex characters, realistic, subtle portrayal, dynamics of relationships in an ordinary setting keeps ktlk apart from others. Not a single character turns out as typical hero/heroine, flawless, all goody good. For me Ashutosh and mallika stand out with their unique, strong, sophisticated yet vulnerable and insecure personalities...its love n hate relationship...i have loved them whole heartedly yet hated to the core, eventually both the characters went through asasination, he was dented n she got butchered.

Thank you Nandini...we had some and stimulating discussions during the baby track, I recall...but well...

@bold I agree with you 100%...most of the other characters give you a sense of dj vu...but these two were indeed unique...pity they had to be trashed the way they were...if only the promise of the first epi had been retained with regard to their relationship, this show could have been a classic...Ashutosh still managed to survive...poor Mallika was annihilated...
