I want to be able to sympathize with Ashutosh's past and pain and also cheer Nidhi on in her ambitions. I want to be able to feel sorry for Mallika, a dignified doctor whose bitterness and jealousy consumed her and left her with nothing but a lonely life of struggle. I don't want to hate any of these characters. I am hoping this show is not going to take harsh stands on right and wrong or get judgmental about husbands and wives. I want to enjoy the experience of peeking into their lives without taking sides with anyone. Rather, i want to have the freedom to keep changing sides depending on the context and probably go crazy figuring it out.
I like the fact that this show is letting me do much of this. It is not perfect. It has many flaws. And yet, it engages me unlike no other because it is offering me raw human dilemma without taking a righteous stand.
However, I think over the top drama and negativity ( not that this show has not been guilty of that) is the order of the day, People want to see black and white and gray is not the color of choice. At least that is what the TRPs seem to be saying.
I remember a show called Hasratein in the 90s. Where you empathized with the husbands, the wives and also their other partners...each of their dilemmas was palpable..the show was a big hit too...have we as an audience lost our ability to appreciate gray?
