Gujarati actors takes over prime time
Drashti Dhami
Gujarat is riding on an 'E' wave. No, we are not talking about economy here. With its rich art and cultural heritage, Gujarat now has got share of the much loved entertainment pie. In Hindi GECs, a major percentage of actors are Gujaratis and they are considered to be immensely talented. Forget those non-descript roles for Gujarati actors.

They are now playing lead roles in daily soaps. The list of Gujarati stars actors who are dominating prime time space across channels in leading roles comprise —Shrenu Parikh in Byah Hamari Bahoo Ka, Jay Bhanushali in Kairi - Rishta Khatta Meetha, Aniruddh Dave in Ruk Jaana Nahi, Manav Gohil in The Buddy Project, Giaa Manek previously in Saath Nibhana Saathiya and currently in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5, Drashti Dhami in Madhubala...Ek Ishq Ek Junoon and Vishal Gandhi in Ek Doosre Se Karte Hain Pyaar Hum. This despite the fact that Gujarat is not part of Hindi belt.

What do producers have to say about these actors? Producer Rajan Shahi, he says, "Gujarati actors are very talented. That apart, they are hard-working and enterprising. Gujaratis are also quite active in theatre and can easily adapt to speaking Hindi. Of course the TV industry boasts of good artists. I've worked with many Gujarati actors and they are doing a great job in their respective ventures." So what makes Gujarati actors tick on the small screen? Producer Hemal Thakkar says, "Gujaratis are proving their mettle even on the small screen as they have polished their craft. Many from performing arts' faculty of MS University have done quite well. Diction wise too, Gujaratis are quite good."

The actors are definitely loving it and enjoying their place in the sun. Shrenu says, "My telly journey has been quite exciting. The good part is, we have many veteran actors, directors and producers here who are constantly around to support us." Aniruddh says, "With my accent as a UP guy in the show, many don't believe that I'm a Gujarati. I've done a lot of Hindi theatre with National School of Drama alumni, and it has made me strong with my diction. I feel proud to represent Gujarat on prime time television."

With Gujaratis taking over the prime time band, looks like it is time to celebrate for these stars!.
