Chapter 12 Back Home

After packing up their things all the interns were waiting for Ashutosh in the hall.The head of the village were thanking them so heartedly that they all got emotional. When Ashutosh came, he couldn't meet Nidhi's gaze again, same was for her. Each and every time they got closer, the same feeling of awkwardness and guilt overcome them. They bid farewell to everyone and were all in the car ready to leave. Ashutosh " Dr Nidhi, how is your foot now, still paining" he asked with a concern voice. " It's fine Sir, I'm feeling quite better now" was the onlr reply from her. Rahul was seated front and the girls at the back. After a few minutes drive, the girls were feeling bored with the silent atmosphere in the car as they couldn't gossip about anything because of their senior's presence. Nidhi " Rahul, can you please switch on the radio?" Rahul gave a look at Ashutosh as if to ask him permission and Ashutosh understood the look and nodded a yes. While driving Ashutosh was constantly looking at Nidhi from his rear-view mirror.The song : "Ajeebh dastaan hai yeh kahan shourou kahan khatam" hearing this song both Ashutosh and Nidhi were looking at each other and Nidhi was feeling quite uncomfortable, so she asked Rahul to change the channel.Rahul agreed as for them this song sounded quite old and they were hoping to hear a new song." Hume aur jeene ki chahat no hoti aagar tum na hote" was the one playing now and this one also was too much for her and asked Rahul to change it again,Rahul was now feeling very inconvenient to change the channel each and every time like that and this also under the gaze of Ashutosh.Even Nidhi was feeling weird to ask him this but she couldn't just listen to these kind of songs especially after what just happened between her and Ashutosh. Ashutosh just suddenly stopped the car, turned back and addressed himself to Nidhi " Dr Nidhi, I think it would be better for you to come and sit front and to this job yourself, as I think you have some problems with all the songs.Nidhi flushed and the others couldn't help themselves from chuckling and before she could say anything Rahul was already outside and opened the door for her to come out. Without any word she accepted and took the front seat. Rahul " Thank you Sir, you saved me" and they all laughed." Come on Dr Nidhi you are the Dj now you can start it but please leave the sound low" he grinned at her. On the channel she chose " Dil mera pooch raha hai tujhse kya pyaar karoge mujhse" was playing and she was about to change that also when suddenly Ashutosh hold her hand and said " Can you please leave this one" Dr Nidhi, this touch of his hand on hers were something that she would want to have every day she thought. Giving Ashutosh a sharp look she slowly removed her hand from his. Till the end of the song Ashutosh was giving her a look each and every time and was as if conveying all his feeling to her through that song and Nidhi understood it. After the song Nidhi thought that it would be better to switch off the radio as this was becoming really uncomfortable for her to bear anymore. Looking back, she realized that they were all asleep, Ashutosh asked her to do same if she feels tired but she preferred not. They weren't talking much only usual matter of hospital and most of the time silence was present. They finally reached KGH after a few hours of drive and Ashutosh gave them a day off tomorrow and he knows they needed it all.Finally they reached safely at KGH.

Ashutosh proposed Nidhi to drop her home as it would be more cautious for her rather than to drive because of her foot. Nidhi " It's ok Sir I'll call Rohan to come and pick me up". Ashutosh " Why Rohan? Dr Nidhi when I am here and proposing you my help, if you don't mind for an old man driving you back home" he told her softly and suddenly his voice became more gravelly, " but it's ok, if you preferred Rohan to do it go ahead call him". Nidhi felt so guilty about what she said and she knew somehow that did hurt him.Nidhi " Sorry Sir, it's not what I wanted to say, I didn't want to bother you, as I know I've given you so much hard time,I know you are very tired also that's why and'." Ashutosh didn't give her time to continue as he knew that this girl can just change her mind in a fraction of seconds and he didn't want to take the risk. " So, Dr Nidhi in the meantime would you please go see Dr Wallia,the Orthopedist to check your feet and be assured that nothing is broken".This concern of his for her really pleased her and while walking she just gave her a charming look and said " Sir, I don't mind at all for you to drop me home and don't worry you are not that old". They both chuckled and went inside.They were welcomed by Dr Rangnath, and he sympathized with Nidhi about her accident. Ashutosh was told that Dr Mallika was back and that she asked to be informed when they arrived. Ashutosh went to gather some of his personal things in his cabin when suddenly Mallika arrived and was looking totally shaken. "Hi Mallika, how are you? You looked so pale , what happened?" By looking at her Ashutosh knew that there was something wrong and Mallika couldn't hold her tears." Ashutosh I'm so sorry" " But what happened Mallika?" " Ashutosh the patient I went for the surgery, I couldn't save him, he was already in a bad stste when I reached, I told the doctors there that I wouldn't take such a risk , but the families insisted and still I couldn't save him" Ashutosh knew how bad a doctor feels when you are unable to save a life but that forms part of their daily life as a surgeon." Mallika, Mallika, it's ok, I know you tried your best, we all trust you, don't blame yourself for this please, this is part of our daily life Malllika, and you know it" Mallika " I know Ashutosh, but still I feel so responsible" " No you should not Mallika,look don't worry just go home have some rest and we will talk about it later ok". Ashutosh approached her and put a friendly tap on her shoulder to comfort her and she just grabbed his hand and put her head on his shoulder. Ashutosh couldn't push her back, even thought he was feeling quite uncomfortable. Just then he heard a knock at the door and Nidhi was infront of the door just shocked to see the scene infront of her.They both pulled apart as if they were caught stealing." Oh I'm so sorry sir, I just came to say that''' she couldn't find words to express herself , she just wanted to come and gave both of them a hard whack , but how could she, " I just want to tell you that ''' she couldn't even talk properly,sorry" she just close the door and left the room without saying anything. She couldn't control her tears , she was feelling like being betrayed and this Ashutosh could see it in her eyes but how could he explain to her that what she saw was nothing, and why would he give any explanation also as officially there's nothing between them. All this was so confusing for them both.

Nidhi was so shattered, she call up a taxi and went home. Reaching home, they were all worried to see Nidhi shaken like this, and Col Verma knew that something happened to her.DB " Arey mere bachi kya huwa,and what happened to your foot, see Yog I told you not to let her go see now" Nidhi couldn't utter a word and Col Verma as usual came to the rescue of his daughter " Nidhi, go freshen up, you look so tired, we will talk later".After taking a good bath, she was still angry about what she saw between Mallika and Ashutosh.The knock on the door brought her back, it was Anjie. Nidhi couldn't help hugging her friend and Anjie knew there was something wrong. Anjie " Arey yaar, kuch bolo kya huwa?"Nidhi "nothing dear, it's just that I'm so happy to see you I've missed you so much" Anjie" Oye drama queen, this won't work with me ok come on quickly tell me what is the problem" This was her friend, her so called sister she knew her and both friend understood each other so much. Nidhi recapitulated everything to Anjie, about the fall, but she couldn't really tell her about the kiss as she doesn't know how she will react, most importantly the Mallika-Ashutosh scene.Anjie "Nidhi, I was so worried when I saw your face, I thought that something really bad had happened to you, come on yaar, what can you do if she had her head,her foot, or whatever on Dr Ashutosh?What do you know about their past, may be they were lovers before and anyway look, why are you angry.The one who should be angry would be either Dr Ashutosh's wife or fiance or Dr Mallika hubby and as far as I know you are none of them so chill" Nidhi gave a strong thought about what Anjie told her and she realized that Anjie was right, why should she worry after all she is nothing for him so why is she feeling like that. They both chuckled and joined the others for dinner.While having dinner, Nidhi told them about the medical trip and how she got hurt and how Dr Ashutosh took great care of her. After dinner she went directly to her room as she really needed a good sleep,when suddenly her phone rang. It was Dr Ashutosh, she didn't really wanted to take the call but she couldn't not take it also this would be rude towards a senior.With a trembling hand she answered the phone.

Nidhi: " Hello Sir"

Ashutosh: " Hello Dr Nidhi, how are you feeling?"

Nidhi: "I'm fine Sir, thank you, did you call only to ask this" she couldn't help asking.

Ashutosh:"Hmmm''.." he didn't know what to say more,he wanted to give an explanation for what she saw but how could he." It's only that I'm sending your car as tomorrow you'll be off may be you'll need it"

Nidhi: "No, Sir it's ok don't you worry about it I'll .'" and again before she could finish her sentence he told her

" I know Dr Nidhi you can send YOUR ROHAN to take it right, I know don't worry no need for you to tell me this each and every time that you have Rohan, I was just trying to help you but as I see you don't need it right"

Nidhi couldn't believe what she just heard, was it a feeling of jealousy that he is having towards Rohan but that makes her really chuckle as she could feel this in his voice meaning that she meant something for him but he would never confess it. Even Ashutosh couldn't believe what she just say.

Ashutosh: " I'm Sorry Dr Nidhi, I shouldn't be talking like this to you and anyway you can send anyone to take your car right?"

Nidhi: " Sir,you didn't even give me time to explain I was about to say that I'll get it myself tomorrow and by the way Rohan is not my employee to make him do all my work ok so please stop putting Rohan in it everytime"

Ashutosh: " Ok Dr Nidhi, so he is not your employee, may be someone else for you right" he told her with the same sternly voice.

Nidhi knew that now that he is going bit too far to know about her personal life and she wanted to pull his leg by not going straight to the point but rather playing around the bush.

Nidhi: " Don't worry about the car Sir, I'll see t it tomorrow for now good night Sir"

Ashutosh: " Dr Nidhi, you didn't answer my question,is it too personal for you to tell?"

Nidhi: " What question Sir,?" she asked why bitting her lower lips as she knew this would made him in a depressive state.

Ashutosh: " Fine Dr Nidhi, I understood that you don't want to answer my question so Good night" and he just hang the phone without any more question.

Nidhi could help chuckling while throwing herself on the bed. She knew that Ashutosh was much concern about what Rohan is to her, and this makes her happy and she knew that he won't stay at peace as long as he doesn't get the answer of his question,but she won't tell him either that easy.The pain killer she took was making her feel sleeping by now.

It was around 8.30 pm when there was a knock at Col Verma house.CV was thinking who that can be and went to open the door. To his great surprise there was standing Dr Ashutosh . C.V " Dr Ashutosh, what a pleasant surprise please come in." Ashutosh " Good evening Sir, I'm sorry to disturb you at this time but'" C.V " No Dr Ashutosh you are not disturbing me at all, actually its good you came everybody sleeping and was feeling quite alone I must say" Looking at his watch Ashutosh was thinking how come Nidhi was already asleep as he wanted to talk to her, to get some answer for his questions. Ashutosh " Oh I'm so sorry I didn't know that you sleep so early it's just that I brought Dr Nidhi's car as I thought that maybe she'll need it tomorrow". C.V " So kind of you Dr but why did you bother yourself, I would have come to take it myself, I'm sorry Nidhi is sleeping I think because she took some medecines , by the way I wanted to call you to thank you for taking care of Nidhi when she fell" Ashutosh "No need to thank me Sir, this is my duty,ok I'll take your leave now." C.V "No Dr Ashutosh, how could you leave like this you have to take a cup of tea with me please, you have to accept" Ashutosh couldn't refuse CV plea and accepted. " Dr Ashutosh, there is a problem, its just that Chotey Sarkar is sleeping soi have to make the tea myself so please don't blame me if it's not good." Both men laughed and Ashutosh seated himself waiting for CV to bring the tea, when suddenly there was a power cut. C.V " Oh my god this had to happen now Dr Ashutosh please me seated I'll have a look at the main switch will you." Ashutosh " Do you want any help Sir," C.V " No thank you Dr I'll be fine just a few minutes.

In the meantime, Nidhi woke up and wanted to drink some water. She switched on the light but found that there was no electricity. She took her torch and made her way in the kitchen.She didn't even see Ashutosh sitting on the sofa, but Ashutosh saw her, walking semi sleepy and with her pyjama so he didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable, so he just sat there and look at her, God how gorgeous she was looking even in her pyjama he thought, but lower his gaze quickly,when suddenly the key he was holding in his hand fell down. Hearing the noise, Nidhi thought of a thief in the house. Holding a saucepan in her hand she made her way where the noise was and suddenly she saw a silhouette near the sofa and was sure it must be the thief. She quickly sitch off the torch and approached her target slowly. Ashutosh was amused and also confused to see Nidhi approaching him silently, without knowing that she didn't know it was him. Holding the saucepan firmly and was about to hit him when she suddenly heard a familiar voice " Dr Nidhi what are you doing". She couldn't believe it, was she dreaming or she going crazy because even the thief's voice was sounding same like Dr Ashutosh. She quickly switch on the torch and found that it was really Dr Ashutosh there sitting.

Nidhi: " Sir, you what are you doing in the dark here, I heard a noise.I thought you were a burglar'.." Nidhi confessed feeling a little stupid.

"And you thought saucepan would be the appropriate weapon?" Ashutosh questioned with no humour in his voice which made the question even more hilarious.Nidhi eyed the saucepan in her hand, seeing for the first time what she was really holding and a tiny laughter burst out of her throat. At first, she tried to control it but then she saw his expression, reflected in the dimly lit room from the torch. Nidhi just laughed,and it seemed like for the first time because this time there was no hint of sadness looming around the corner. She was laughing because it was funny right then, not at a passed memory or to prove a point. She would've laughed longer,enjoyed the sensation a few seconds more but she realized the expression in Ashutosh's face had changed from a serious curiosity to a happy shock one, not surprised just shocked.Nidhi stopped laughing and handed her weapon to him as she started moving toward the kitchen for the tea she had wanted, then suddenly turned back to him " But what are you doing here alone in the dark in my house?" Ashutosh " Wow all these questions at the same time ok first, it was not dark when I came, second I dint come inside by myself but your father opened the door, I brought you your car, and he was about to make tea when suddenly there was this power cut. So did I answer all your question Dr Nidhi Verma?" Nidhi felt her cheeks boiling but kept her self control " Oh baba is not sleeping yet where is he?" Ashutosh" he told me he's going to check the main switch I think". Ashutosh " So I have an idea Dr Nidhi while waiting for your Baba to come why don't you make the tea for me yourself?" Nidhi " What, me making tea but'.." she didn't want to tell him that she never made tean before but since he asked she would sure try to make it."OK Fine I'll do it if you insist" she told him making her way to the kitchen.Ashutosh followed her. Nidhi felt a bit uncomfortable as she was in her pyjama and didn't want him to be in the kitchen with her she would really feel awkward." Don't worry Sir, just sit and I'll bring you the tea" Ashutosh " but Dr Verma how would you see in the dark there should be someone holding the torch right?" he got her right now she thought, so there could be no more discussion on this.Nidhi pretended to be at ease, Ashutosh eyes were constantly on her looking at this beauty infront of him, he wanted just to come closer to her and hold her tightly. Nidhi tried to hide away from the inspecting eyes but she never stopped feeling his eyes boring on her. She set the water to boil and turned abruptly having had enough.

" What?" She almost yelled. " Why are you staring at me?"

"Why? Can't I? Am I not allowed to?" He challenged her.

" Well, you're staring at me! So No you are aren't allowed to!"she retorted.

"But they are my eyes'.. I can look at whatever I want to look at," Ashutosh's face had a sly smile on his face that made it impossible for Nidhi to look at his face which made her realize that Ashutosh was standing almost ten steps away from her, she realized that he had changed his clothes and was now wearing a silk white long-sleeved shirt with a v-neck,showing off his sparkling skin wearing only a short sleeve shirt showing his muscles and perfect body and jeans.His body, as with any other guy who had played various sports since the age of 10,was healthy. Well healthy was actually an understatement, but Nidhi couldn't make herself admit that those firm abs and the tall ,slender body was hot.What did it matter that he had six pack abs? It didn't change the fact he was a kharoos.But hadn't she promised to change her view on Ashutosh?Nidhi debated silently with herself while Ashutosh had moved in on her.Before she could realize what she was staring at,Ashutosh was one palm away from her,breathing on her,making her breath go out in the wrong pattern and with the wrong volume level.She was just way too loud and she knew he could hear her.She knew he was enjoying it. Nidhi backed up as Ashutosh tried to cover the little space between them only to find that she had already been leaning onto the counter. With a click sound, Nidhi pushed her eyes to see sideways.His hands leaned on to the gas. He had turned it off.
