In television, it is the character that becomes iconic. It is Tulsi, Parvathi, Mihir etc and never Smriti, Saakshi or Ronit. I am not decrying the contribution of the actor but the character reigns supreme. If you look at the top ranking shows on the TRP charts, most of them have leads who are not particularly known or even particularly good actors. Yet, something about the character makes the audience connect with it and live its life vicariously. Of course the actor is the face of the character but, in serial land, the character returning with a new face is an oft used technique to kindle interest and hike TRPs.
It is the script and the script alone that holds and sustains audience interest. If that appeals, they will watch irrespective of who is playing it. Even Tulsi, who is possibly one of the most iconic characters of Indian TV, got a change of face. So did Mihir, more than once. Smriti did return to play Tulsi again but the show did not shut down in her absence,
Coming to Dr Ashutosh, the show is niche and the chances of the character emerging an icon were always minimal. While it did appear nuanced initially, pathetic scripting destroyed it all too soon. The show's popularity started dipping even before the face change, although there are those who believe that it never really got off to a flying start as people expected. So, any chemistry did not really work wonders on the TRPs. And when the scripting is bad, no actor or no chemistry between the lead pair can save the show.
Given the snail pace of the show in the current track, the tendency to repeat themselves and insult an audience's intelligence despite claiming that the show is aimed at an intelligent audience and, not to forget, the attempt to outdo saas-bahu shows in depicting emotional atyachaar, I don't think it would make a difference even if Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, with their legendary chemistry, had replaced the current leads!
