Some things are overdramatized in the serials. Even if a bahu knows cooking, in real life I have never seen anyone leaving her alone in the kitchen to cook for the entire family soon after the marriage because it is the 'rasm'. For the rasm, mostly she will just enter the kitchen, in the best case cook a sweet dish or something. Or mostly, just touch whatever is being cooked once.

I never learnt cooking specifically at home. But then, I have stayed in hostels all my life, so didn't even have to occasionally help at home. I stayed independently after my education was over. I never sat down to specifically learn cooking even then. But cooked once in a while for myself, because I wasn't a noodles person. 😆

Now married (not arranged), I still don't do daily cooking. We have a cook for that. And when we do cook on our own, me and hubby do it together. Both of us do not believe in stereotypical gender roles. In our cooking expeditions, often both of us are on phone with our respective Moms. 😃

Overall, as a not-so-regular-cook, I find that cooking by itself is not tough. What is tough is to do it without fuss, like how I see Mom making pooris alone (I need someone to help or else I first belofy it in batches and then fry it), or cooking two-three dishes in parallel, or reflexively knowing what all is needed and having it on the kitchen top before starting the cooking process (many a times I would start making dough and then realize that water is not enough. So, hubby has to get me more water. 😆 or I would start frying sabzi, then realized that I forgot to cut onions! So, have to switch off the gas and go back to cutting onions).

But when I come to it, I have entertained a party of up to 10 people with home cooked food. So, I am capable of cooking. Cooking once in a while for party is fun and for each other is romantic. ☺️ But I can not do it on a daily basis.

Hubby is actually more enthusiastic about cooking and eating than I am (though both of us are equally lazy about it 😛) . Funniest thing is that my in-laws are willing to believe that I can cook. It's my parents who never believe it. They think that whatever cooking is done at our house must be done by my hubby. 😆

And yeah - I envy people who find cooking to be a stress-buster. You have such a constructive and positive way of dealing with stress! 😊

Fab post!I don't know if it's necessary to know cooking before marriage but it sure does come in handy if you do.When I got married I didn't even know how to even make tea properly and every time I tried to cook something than I had to call up my mum as I was totally clueless but now I can safely say I have improved in my cooking skills quite a bit.No one's a born cook,we all have to learn as we go along.

My cooking is just theek tha, but I really enjoy eating whatever I cook myself.
About my Roti kya kahen pehle toh papad jaisi banti thi aur Ab khane laayak ban jaati hai , round shape toh shayad agle janam me ban paaye.
Roz Mummy ki daant padti hai ki Shaadi ke baad kya hoga tumhara.

Lovely post see-xaan
I think boys also should know cooking, Biwi bhi beemar padti hai. Cooking toh sabko Aani cahiye
