Love on pause mode in telly soaps

A still from Parichay

No touching, no touching, only seeing only seeing, that chartbusting Himesh Reshammiya song (from Damadamm) could very well sum up the kind of romance portrayed in daily soaps these days.

While there are plenty of cliched love scenes in the prime time shows - long eyelocks (without blinking!) the hero firmly tugging the nubile beauty's long, flowing dupatta or the leading lady 'falling' conveniently into the hero's waiting arms, there's no real passion. If courting couples on telly are shy, awkward and content with just all of the above, newly married couples have to patiently wait for weeks and months before they can consummate their relationship. Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Bade Achhe Laggte Hai, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, Parichay, Dharampatni,Diya Aur Baati Hum, Phulwa, Sasural Simar Ka and Saath Nibhaana Saathiya are perfect examples of couples who are supposedly in love/halfway in love, but virtuously refrain from even embracing each other (it's a family show, viewers might get offended to see some serious PDA!).

Most TV producers insist that the audience is not prepared to see too much love too soon on a TV show. "While, the expression of love is missing, the actual romance and consummation among the leads is what the audiences wants to see. People want to see classic age-old romance on TV and not supersonic instant love. We try to show consummation as time progresses," says producer Nikhil Sinha. On the other hand, some show makers say there is enough romance for viewers. "I feel the TV shows are actually advising couples today to take it slow and spend quality time with their spouses/partners," says Romesh Kalra, director of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. Even after the couples are married, the consummation sequences don't follow immediately! "There are limitations, we can't show consummation scenes as the target audience is the entire family. TV couples also need time to understand and share a comfort level with each other. Smooching scenes are a big no-no as kids also watch television," Romesh adds ruefully.

Channel heads however, disagree that love is missing on television. Virendra Shahane, fiction head of a GEC says, "Pulling dupattas as an expression of love is passe. Consummation is a high point on all TV shows, so a lot of drama needs to unfold before it can take place."

After marriage, the entire definition of romance changes and there is more intimacy involved. Keeping in mind the censor board rules, soapmakers insist that they carefully monitor content and never go overboard in their shows. Siddharth P Malhotra, producer of Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hain says, "My shows only have romance. I feel kissing is progressive and it should be done on TV, but as per rules, smooching is not allowed even in the post 11 pm band. So, we show romance in the form of hugging."

Those of you who have wondered why TV couples are in the coy, hands-off mode even during love scenes, for now the dupatta romance and wistful eyelocks will have to suffice, until the viewing rules are changed!

He he he he...I have just burst into laugh after reading this article and cant stop laughing...😆 😆 I mean she researched on this very well 👏, found the mindset or thinking process of the show maker / producers / directors.😕...( Alas , she did not take interview of us, the actual viewers and what we think about this )...But still she did a very commendable job...👏 👏 👏
But what put me in split is the fact she included Kuch Toh Log Kahenge with these serials 😆 😆 😆: Bade Achhe Laggte Hai, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, Parichay, Dharampatni,Diya Aur Baati Hum,Phulwa, Sasural Simar Ka and Saath Nibhaana Saathiya ...😲 😲
Madam KTLK did not even show any touch scene yet...😆...The other shows are far ahead in means of romance...But yes, for me our lead pair is far better from oher serials making us crazy even with their no touch romance...❤️❤️❤️

Nice article. I feel , Love should be more with great conversation , The Man should bring the smile in the women he is dating or is in love as small talks would bring an ocean of happiness in them

The maturity in a couple shows when they can sit down and speak their hearts out understand what each one feels.

Consummation should be the last on teh list as the times change authenticity in a relationship comes with a lot of understanding and when two beautiful people sit and talk viewers would defiantly find this more interesting and the love and passion falls in place

well said Shanti. Consumation is the last thing...
Funny part is compared with other Shows, in KTLK romance happens with BDs and the leads do not even sit next to each other. Some times I feel they both are like student and teacher.
To be honest compared with same aged couples in other shows, in KTLK because of the age difference, these two lovers should show some passion then only the scenes will click. Otherwise it will be half baked romance... which we are seeing now

I agree, and there should be good conversation and something with a lot of maturity and concrete interms of what are individuals midset and exploring eachothers nature.

Only if a couple sits together across a table they will know how compatible they are and how this can go a long way

Sometimes when they show silly things like hair dye, specs and the food likes and disco its seems too immature for these will fall into place later also depending how comfortable the two lead their life and these are all secodary aspects which you can gauge later

Hopefully after the Vday things will fall into place and have the actors F2F and always be around when they play the part of their characters and show that needed conversation to bring out the aspect of how we being the couple with the age gap still have many things in common which we can share and bring happiness to each other

Love dwells into such relastionships

I Am sure..Writer Missed some thing...By Mistake He/she Added some other shows name in this article...This article is strictly written for one show-KTLK...

KTLK is the only show where Leads stand 5 ft away while romancing,Eye locks are mostly between BDs with wierd expression...(why is this expression...AshBD and NidhiBD faces are still unknown😡)

In all other shows...Bahus and Betis Bahao Lotts of Tears..Their Patidev/BF atleast wipes tears by their hands...but our Ashu in this situation Gives Hanky to Nidhi..This is Heights of No Touch Romance..👏

Parichay-Leads touch,Kiss..

BALH-Leads recently hugged each other...so they Touched...

IP-Their Kiss is so famous itss all over internet...

and so on with other shows.also..So I request Not to degrade our show by comparing it with other serials...our show is really UNIQUE show..with No touching no touching...But only seeing BD only seeing BD...

P.S...We do get Episodes like V day...and we thrive on such episodes for atleast 2 months...Sigh...

BB loved the above bit dear...For me too this lead pair is better than any other on TV at present...despite their touch-me-not attitude...Whenever I see Ashni love scenes I always think of the following lines from an old song...Aankhon hi aankhon mein ishara ho gaya, baithe baithe jeene ka sahara ho gaya...Love the song one of my all time favourites...Ashni's nainon ki bhasha is simply awesome...But still miss the hugs...
