Some thoughts which I would like to discuss with all of you after watching the last few episodes...
1. When I look at Dev and Sonakshi, I am reminded of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet... The reason being both Lizzie and Darcy core values and individual characteristics were similar... But, the worlds inhabited by each of them are completely different...
That is why, at the beginning of Pride & Prejudice, we can easily distinguish and differentiate them but as the story progresses and we get to know about the characters, we realise that their qualities are too similar...
When Lizzie calls Darcy proud and prejudiced, we later come to discover that the same qualities also exist in her, but the way they come out is different...
In the end, they only came back together, when they are realised the similarities between themselves and forgot about the differences that existed between them... This allowed them to embrace each other completely and without inhibitions.. They realised that the only way that they could find happiness lies in being together and their relationship is worth fighting for...
The above thought continues to reside inside my mind since the time in yesterday's episode, Asha told Sonakshi, that both she and Dev are too similar...
And, I realised that it is easy to notice the differences but difficult to find the similarities between two people... And, since, their positives are same, therefore, they continue to disregard each other's goodness and only focus on the negatives, to justify their anger and hurt...
2. We have spoken a lot about Dev's affairs as well as Sona keeping Soha away from her father (not intentionally) for nearly seven years...
I found that even in this situation, they are both are acting and behaving in a similar fashion...
Sonakshi kept Dev's right as Suhana's father sacred and untouched, even though, Jatin was really a good replacement/ alternative to fill the void... By this gesture, she continued to remain faithful to Dev...
Similarly, Dev, even though, had a multitude of affairs, only kept the right to his heart and affections for Sonakshi... And, this is why, even though, he was engaged in a lot of relationships, he never allowed anyone to take Sona's place in his heart nor allowed her memories, whether good or bad, to be faded or lost... And, hence, this is how Dev continued to remain faithful to Sona...
@Sam's discussion between transcendental and physical love was quite thought provoking... And, she believed that Dev is a representative of physical aspect of love while Sona represents the former... And, I still agree with you, but I believe that in the absence of each other for the past 7 years, their concepts and stance of love were reversed...
While, Dev continued to love Sona from his heart and soul, and hence, for his relationships with others were meaningless since he never involved his heart... On the other hand, Sona remained close to Dev physically through Soha (as the symbol of their love)...
3. Yesterday, we explored a lot of different shades of both of the protagonists as well as some interesting parallels...
Elena's conversation with Sonakshi was interesting, to say the least... We all sympathise with Sona, since she was left homeless and pregnant.. Hence, the responsibility of not only getting her family out of the financial crisis but also, raise Soha singlehandedly (not ignoring, Bose family's as well as Jatin's contributions and emotional support).. This is quite similar to the initial struggles of both Dev and Ishwari...
And, while Dev came out of the marriage relatively unscathed, in terms of the financial sense, he lost everything in the form of Sonakshi.. Through divorce, he didn't only lose his wife, but also, his best friend... The one individual who truly loved him for who he is and not, because he is Dev Dixit...
And, while, he still considers his responsibilities and his obligations important... He has learnt the difference between true family and relationships built and bound by blood...
The above statement was clearly proven yesterday, when he accused Vicky for stealing from the funds that he kept aside for Golu's future... During the confrontation, he referred to Golu as 'his Golu' ('mera Golu') and not as his nephew...
And, unlike, Sonakshi, he didn't have anyone to emotionally depend on and hence, Golu's entry into his family was like a breath of fresh air... (This also shows how much he has become distant from Ishwari, in the emotional sense)
In some sense, he moved away from his torments of his childhood years as well as redeemed himself slightly by being a source of joy and happiness for Golu, something he failed to do with Sonakshi...
I am not saying that his redemption is complete or but what I am trying to say, that while Soha was Sona's salvation.. Golu was not only Dev's salvation but also, the beginning of his redemption and moving away from the demons that have continued to plague him since his childhood...
4. Sonakshi's statement regarding 'apna-paraya' just again reinforced my first point... While Dev in the seven year gap, has come to understand (to an extent) the difference between true family and family based on blood.. Sona is slowly beginning to learn the difference between the two...
Another interesting point which I observed, that while Sonakshi called herself as the 'bahu' of the Dixit household, she continuosly refuses to call herself as 'Dev's patni'...
Which I might believe, is the way in which her subconciousness is telling her that while she has tried to fulfil (and mostly succeeded in meeting) all the demands and expectations of being the daughter-in-law (bahu) of the house, she has failed to fulfil the demands and expectations of being Dev's wife (patni)... That, she never truly invested in her relationship with her husband while focussing most of her energy in pleasing others in the family (so, that they accept her as the daughter-in-law and hence, as Dev's wife)...
5. And, since, we are talking on this topic, I can't forget the conversation between Sona and Dev in the kitchen...
Sonakshi tells Dev in very simple terms that he is temporary and hence, disposable.. The only reason, she is with him is because of Suhana... This was clearly evident by the words, 'they (Sona and Soha) were happy before he entered their life and will be happy, if he is no longer present in the picture' ('Hum tumhare aane se pehle bhi khush the or tumahare na hone par bhi, khush rehna seekh jaayenge')...
(We all know that she didn't really believe those words, but still I feel that it reveals quite a lot of her hidden feelings and fears)
Hence, by going by her words, (and since, Dev takes everything on face value, we can safely assume that he is going to believe them), we can say that she considers Dev as an 'outsider' (paraya) to her inner family... (And, I still believe that some part of it is true since she never really felt part of his family or for that matter, his world)
This statement is quite ironic since she accused her ex-husband of a crime in which I believe he is completely innocent...
Dev has always believed that she is part of his family... That, she is his (apna) family in the real and the true sense... He is the same man who dragged his girlfriend to a family photograph and considered rituals and customs as a mere formality... He allowed Sona to become involved in Neha-Ranveer's marriage talks by asking her opinion (on what is more important, money or love or for that matter, designer lehenga issue)..
(I think, this is the reason why Sona feels so comfortable in entering into Dixit's family matters since Dev allowed her... But, what she fails to understand, he only allowed her to participate in his family's decision making process as his partner, and not as an executive member of the family.. He also gave the same rights to Ishwari.. But, Ishwari knows the extent of control that she exercises on Dev's decisions while Sonakshi does not..)
He always exposed his inner demons/ thoughts to Sonakshi because he believed that she will still love him, regardless of his actions and not be judgemental when he made mistakes, but will assist him in being a better man... Hence, I will never agree when someone will accuse Dev of considering Sona as an 'outsider'...
He loved her too much to think on such lines... But, where he failed was to assure Sona due to his lack of action... He failed to convince her that she truly is part of his family...
Sonakshi, had stopped believing his words, long before their divorce even happened and hence, needed some solid evidence to see whether his actions actually convey the same message that he is trying to communicate through his words... When he didn't, she came to the (wrong) conclusion that he always considered her as an outsider and was a 'mere toy' for him to play with... (Words used by Sonakshi at their wedding night, after Ishwari drama...)
6. Till now, Dev, in both during the breakup fiasco (when he told her that this relationship between them is over) as well as his words during the slapgate ('Get Out') and the ensuing confrontation in the farmhouse, were words spoken out of anger and hurt, with the only intention that Sonakshi gives him some space and time to think for himself... He never truly believed those words and hence, were meaningless and hollow...
This is quite similar to what Sonakshi said yesterday during hers and Dev conversation in the kitchen... She only needed a little bit of individual space and time, but she doesn't know the extent of the damage that her seemingly hollow words can cause in their already fragile relationship, since Dev believes them to be true.
Hence, for the first time in the series, she is standing on the same spot as Dev when he said those hurtful (but actually, hollow) words to her... And, now, I feel that she'll understand Dev's perspective as well as get a lesson on 'why words said in anger should be forgotten.'
I hope, by this statement of hers, she also begins her journey to understand the extent of her control on Dev as well as understand the rights that he gave her, including the right to hurt him...
7. Phew, I guess, this was a lot of analysis on Devakshi's relationship... But, in yesterday's episode, some other really beautiful parallels were drawn by the creatives of this show...
The most obvious being how Saurabh and Ronita cancelled their honeymoon for Sonakshi... It resembles a lot of the events and circumstances that led to Dev and Sonakshi cancelling their own honeymoon trip..
But, at the same time, there were some stark contrasts between the situations, most namely being Saurabh asking Ronita's permission before mutually deciding to cancel their honeymoon and the lack of emotional drama (which ensued after Dev and Sonakshi's decision or to be more precise, Dev's decision which was supported wholeheartedly by Sona...)
Also, the lack of anguish and tears was nice to observe, unlike in Dev and Sona's case, where they were both hurt by this decision, yet did it because of their family's benefit.. (I am not ignoring the pain that must have been felt by Saurabh and Ronita, but in comparison.. It was more of a mutual understanding rather than a sacrifice on both of their part, which was certainly the case during Devakshi's decision)
(And, I know believe that Saurabh and Ronita's marriage will not fail... They will face struggles but will be able to surpass all of them since they prioritise their marriage and hence, value their relationship.. Without knowing, they are both learning from Dev and Sona's mistakes)
But, what I am most interested in, is not how of each of these pairs dealt with a similar situation but now, what happens next when Ronita's mom comes to know of this decision and the reason behind it will again fuel her insecurities...
And, again, Sonakshi, without any fault of her own, will be standing on the same spot as Neha was standing during the honeymoon disaster...
During that time, Bijoy accused Neha of not understanding the importance of Dev and Sona spending time together and this time, if Ronita's mom does the same thing, will he tolerate it??
Also, if the ensuing chaos, if the truth regarding the theft of jewellery comes out, will Bijoy again hold a grudge against her son's wife's mother like he did, in case of Ishwari??
(I always believed that the animosity between Bijoy and Ishwari were one of the prime reasons for their children failed marriage.. And, the origin was not the first breakup, but the accusations that Ishwari held against the Boses when they came with the marriage proposal.)
8. In the last few episodes, especially the last one, another interesting dynamic came into light...
Vicky always wanted respect but never really worked for it. Hence, he never earned it... He believed that money and status might end up giving him what he desired the most..
But, now, he is reaping the (unwanted) rewards for his actions.. Nobody still respects him and he is slowly, but surely, losing the love of both his wife (if not already lost) as well as his son, to his elder brother (the person he hates the most, yet he desires to become like him)..
And, in his jealousy, he is slowly losing the control of his senses, and turning into a completely black character with no redemption in sight... If he continues on this path, he will surely destroy his whole life...
And, with his destruction, Mami's will also lose the most important person in her life... And, this looks like an exciting future for me and I believe, a fair punishment for all the hurt that these two caused in Devakshi's life..
9. And, finally, kudos to our cute Golu, who told or reiterated the most simple, yet the most intriguing aspect of one's life to his beloved Bigcha, 'We only cause pain to those people who are closest to us.'
Finally, the analysis is complete and now, I can go back to my everyday life, since the thoughts that were being an obstacle in my path, are finally removed...
