The Inclination Of A Vague Heart

The first time i saw Sonakshi was in the summer of 3rd grade. I remember that day clearly. The ceaseless buzzing of the classroom and the unlimited amount of energy the students had increased, which would be a rare sight if the class was under their teacher's supervision. Me and my friends were kicking a soda can around the classroom while two girls screamed as we impinged onto their table.

I was so engrossed in winning a goal that i didn't took notice of our Ma'am walking towards us, hand in hand with a girl.
My then-best friend Rohan tugged on my sleeves stopping me from hitting the can and making my head snap up. I blinked a few times, in an attempt to help my eyes adjust to the illumination of colors directed right at my defenseless figure.

A petit girl stood with a hip jutted to one side, her right arm draped across her slender body, clasping the elbow opposite. She was wearing an orange polka-dot shirt with a yellow skirt accompanied by red boots. It made her stand out like a goth at a pep rally. With black tousled hair of wool and her head held high, she waltzed on with an effortless saunter, as if her choice of clothing didn't make her look like a Joker.

"Children, meet your new friend Sonakshi" Our teacher chirped happily and Sonakshi waved her hand at us. "I hope you will help her out."

All the students took their respective seats while continuingly gawking at her. I was one of those who couldn't help but look at her quirkiness.

The teacher motioned her to take a seat and her her eyes scanned the room with determination in search of someone, when her eyes met mine she smiled. I froze.
As she made her way towards me, i kept chanting 'Please not here' but the odds just weren't in my favour.

"Can i sit here?" She asked politely, her head lolled down to one shoulder.

Now let me tell you how 3rd grade worked at that time. Once your classmates get an impression that you like someone, they wouldn't let it go. I was so sure that if i said yes, then in the coming years my friends would even start rhyming "Dev and Sonakshi sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g".

Keeping in mind my reputation for coming years, i shook my head 'No.'

She flinched but didn't let my rudeness waver her smile as she said, "Your loss".

***

Now when i ponder on these days, i realize she stood out like a bright star in the dead of night. She was the shades of colors in my black and white life. And i wonder if things would have been different now if i hadn't told her no. Or if i hadn't shoved her in the pit of mud in 4th grade or humiliated her poem in front of the classroom in 7th grade or hid her homework just for fun in 10th grade.

In my heart I retract all the bad things I ever said or did to her, they were never a reflection on her, only on my inner demons.

I just wanted to make things a little clearer.. i explained it in the prologue that Dev was Sonakshi's bully during their school days. I actually took this bullying idea from real life. While it hasn't happened to me, it did with someone i knew closely. There will be an explanation to why Dev was so rude to Sona later in the chapters

Chapter 1

Sonakshi's POV

It was sunset. I watched with an unwavering gaze, as a fiery red orb of light slowly sank beneath the horizon, and threads of light lingered in the sky, mingling with the rolling clouds.

The site was so breathtaking that i just wanted to stand there but knowing my new roommate would be expecting me upstairs in my new flat, i carried my feet towards the stairs. Hostels weren't my best suit so i, in my 2nd year of medical college, decided to finally get an apartment on rent which i found after nearly 2 months of searching. It was a 2BHK flat which landed safely in my buget and even though i had never met my roommate, the flat called out to me.

As soon as the door open and my eyes landed on Hetakshi Sharma, i knew i was going to like her. The brunette was wearing a bedsheet around her neck as a cape, a weird cap and a 3d specs making her look like a comic book hero. She had the prettiest hair, tight curls of gold, all moving freely over her chubby cheeks.

I chukled. "Are you trying to save someone?"

She blinked at me and then laughed as she stepped back from the door, gesturing me into the apartment. "Welcome my dear new flatmate. My name is Hetakshi but you can call me Hetvi."

I looked back at Hetvi with a huge grin on my face, feeling good about the entire situation. "I'm Sonakshi. Nice me to meet you."

"Sona" she repeated, grinning at me as I took my first steps inside the ground floor apartment. It smelled great. Fresh and clean.

"I'm in 2nd year of architecture."

"That's Interesting." I threw Hetvi a smile over my shoulder. "I'm a medical student."

The walls were hung with fine grey canvas, it had a large, silvery grey, silky carpet, and the furniture was covered with dark green silky material. There were tons of books lying idly around the flat.
Hetvi hurriedly collected her novels and shoved it in a cupboard. "Sorry I'm a bookworm." Her lips curled up apologetically.
"Don't worry about it, i actually love reading." I gave her a soft, reassuring smile and she answered it, her shoulders relaxing

Hetvi then showed me the rest of the flat. The walls in my room were painted blue and had a mural, a tree with every colour of fall leaf imaginable painted by Hetvi. It had high ceilings, a massive bay window, gorgeous French Rococo bed.
"Do you like it?" Hetvi grin sheepishly as she took off the hat and cape leaving the 3D specs on.
"I had seen the flat about 3 months ago but that time it wasn't furnished and it looked plain as porridge." I admitted. "But i like it better now."

We talked a little about books and she showed me her book collection. Her eyes lit up when she bragged about her parents and her boyfriend who lived next door. His name was Abhik and they have been going out for 7 months now.

Seconds later, I found myself alone in the bedroom unpacking my boxes as Hetvi made tea in the kitchen. She offered her help but i declined; i liked doing things on my own. She told me i had two hours before her neighbor come in with food.

After an hour i was mostly done with unpacking when Journey sang 'Don't stop believing" really loudly at me. I slipped my phone out of my pocket and smiled at the caller I.D.
"Hey dad." I answered warmly.
"Have you moved into your new flat yet? Is everything okay? How is your roommate?"
I sat on the edge of bed. "Dad everything is fine. My roommate is pretty cool."
"Okay, call me if you need any help."

I bid my dad goodbye as the doorbell rang. That must be Hetvi's neighbours with food. The rich aroma of paneer wafted down and beckoned me. I rushed out of the room and towards the kitchen as i heard some muffling. Two guys stood in kitchen with Hetvi, there back turned towards me. I tried not to make any noise as i walked towards the table.

"Did you get a bottle of Sprite and some sweets for my new roommate?" I heard Hetvi asked one of the guys and i picked the mug of untouched tea resting on the table.

"Yes just like you asked."

My eyes widened at the familiar deep voice but before i could do anything, he turned around and his confused black eyes met my horrified ones.

"Munchkin?" He breathed out the name he gave me since the 7th grade when he discovered in PE class that i had the smallest height in the class.

My fingers trembling around the mug as the cold sweat broke out across my skin and blood rushed in my ears. My legs twitched, fighting the impulse to whirl around and run away far from this place.

"Dev." I gritted out.

Dev Dixit. The guy who made my life miserable with his little petty ideas. He pulled every little thing from beneath my feet and was indifferent to the fact that I could no longer stand. I offered my soul, my friendship to him like a brilliant white light, a force to heal an ailing world of cynicism. Yet what he did was wound me inside out and pushed me further away. I despised him. With all my heart.

AN: The first chapter was very small because i just wanted you all to get to know the character a little better now. The next chapters are gonna be a lot bigger than this once.
