They are worn by most married bengali women.
The white one is called Shakha and the red one Pola.

It is, as someone else said, "Suhaag ki nishani"😃

In the olden days If someone's husband died, they would hit these two bangles against the floor and break them marking an end to their married life and the entrance to a life for widows.

Some people still do that.

Shankha or the white bangle is made with Shankh as in conch shell and can be intricately carved or woven with gold (Shankha badhano) and Pala the red bangle is made with coral and also can be woven with gold (Pola badhano). Both mine had gold woven in them.

Along with it, we wear loha or a bangle made with iron covered in gold with or without diamonds or other stones (mine was with diamond). But loha is worn only in one hand. Shankha pola in both hands, traditionally as long as you are married. But is taken off if husband dies or get divorced.

My pala was like the one in the picture. Shankha was different. The gold bangle on one hand is loha (iron) covered with gold.
