Excellent analogy, Pehchaan.Kaun. I think by now, most of us are clear that who is definitely not a hero from any angle. But that was a good point made. Raj who went halfway across the world to fight for his love and win back everyone of her family member is a hero.
Dev is not hero from any definition.

I am a DDLJ fan myself, but I really have to suspend my feminism to enjoy that movie as I grow up, and I honestly don't know if it's totally healthy for us to continue to glorify Raj as a perfect suitor. That scene where he "jokes" that Simran, a lone girl, lost in a foreign country without her passport, had sex with him while black-out drunk... and then after she starts crying says he knew all along what her virginity meant to an Indian girl? WHY would he put her through that then? ๐Ÿ˜•

But more importantly, in order for Raj to be the hero, Simran has to do nothing but sit around and wait for his instructions for the entire second half of the film. Her agency gets shot down when he refuses to run away with her and insists that they win her father's approval. Forget the fact that she has grown up with Baldev. Forget the fact that her mother, who advises the same, has been married to him most of her adult life. In order to make Raj a hero, both of these women are shown clueless about someone they have spent their lives with. They sit and watch as Raj, who has never met Baldev ends up understanding him best of all! All Simran is left with is to have faith, support Raj, and laugh at the expense of Kuljeet and Preeti's feelings.

It's a cynical view, yes, but one that can't be denied. I'm not saying you have to watch the movie that way, or that you have to enjoy it's entertainment value less, but it's good to be aware of how embedded these constructs are, sometimes in art that we love and think is pure good.

Dev is not a hero, he has never been written as one, and I think that is a good thing. In fact he shows us how the expectation from society to be the flawless, catch-all, charming, problem-solver, like our hero Raj, can reduce someone to empty promises and vague, grandiose statements that can't be carried out in the real world as nimbly as they are in a heavily overdetermined, three(and a half?)-hour film.

To be honest it's almost a sacrilege even mentioning someone like Dev with Raj. Dev is Kuljeet only.

๐Ÿ˜ƒ Fighting for love, agreeing to go through so much of torture and humiliation by your FIL for valid reasons still having faith that FIL will understand his love - one gotta love real deep to not lose faith and still want to keep fighting. Why do I love Raj ? 100000 reasons, one being the expectant look he gives to Baldev in the end and the hope he has on his face when Simran was pleading relentlessly, he didnt lose faith that his love will make its way ๐Ÿ˜Š ..

For Dev I cannot even see 0.000001% of that zeal to fight for it, instead slap your FIL when he talks some sense ๐Ÿ˜› Hero of Y2K age !!

Interesting.

How I see that though is different. Raj didnt have sex with her, neither he was the one who put her into that condition. She got drunk herself and being the prankster that Raj is, he played a prank which did no harm to her. Those dialogs of understanding Indian values didnt make Simran or 1000 other girls fall for him, but the prank and the fun did. The reliability which Raj created was sexy, not the sentences ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Sometimes a third person sees things in a way the 2 people in a relationship fails to see that. Simran and Laajo had seen Baldev from a family man's perspective, but Raj knows how an honest man always sees through the struggle of somebody. Eloping is never encouraged, and Raj made them see that through his story of his mother. He wanted to give it a try, a fight ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Thats what lovers do. If in the end Baldev didnt agree, Raj might have agreed to Simran and her mother and would have eloped. But they believed in each other and fought for it. And out of all, they didnt think of saying 'tata bye bye, daddy doesnt agree' to each other ๐Ÿ˜•

Dev is a fabulously blind and perfect son but a pathetic lover, he doesnt know how to keep the respect of the lady ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

How can an iconic character like Raj be compared with this creature called Dev Dixit?
I made my son watch DDLJ and told him see this is how a decent guy should be. And whenever he watches kuch rang I tell him this is how a man should never be

My wish. Seriously not answerable to anyone . Have I or anyone else here ever come to posts fawning over Devakshi romance and ask how can you like it when Sonakshi is going to be humiliated the next minute and the great lover will not even care?

We don't as we know that everyone is entitled to do what they want/like what they want. At least I don't even open such posts. Me going into those and start moral policing there would be quite stupid in my opinion.

Because everyone has there own free will, choice and taste. No one has any business to preach others as to what they should do or like.

Time pass karne ke liye dekhte hai. Is that a problem?
And unlike some people, I can't fangirl for a show just for the cheesy and two minute romance of the couple. I was promised something through the promos and I wanted to see how they progress their story. Unfortunately, most of the shows succumb to old tactics of saas bahu saga and go down the drain. Exactly what's happening with this "amazing" show.
