The whole point of inserting the scene with him asking Ishwari to go in the engagement is to show that he has now begun to DEFY his mom's wishes. He is going to go we know but Ish will expect he will stay away as he always follows her advice.

It is to serve this purpose that despite her saying it so clearly he still went ... it is a big blow for Ishwari's pride !!! this is the reason for this scene.
