Chapter 18:
7:30 AM, New Delhi, India.
Elina Bose was never a light sleeper. Therefore it was not a surprise when she managed to miss six calls and continue sleeping. But the caller on the other end was no less persistent. Finally on the seventh ring she picked up the phone swearing loudly.
"Ye koi time hai call karne ka...by god it's so early. Who the hell is this?" She muttered sleepily.
"Elina...me..Sonakshi"
Elina was wide awake hearing her cousin's panic stricken voice. Since her arrival in India this was the first time Sona was calling her..and knowing her cousin's nature she was sure it had to be an emergency.
"Sona...kya hua? Tu theek to hai na?"
"Main..wo actually..." Sonakshi stammered.
"Sona...please bata kya hua...you are scaring me now"
But Sona could not speak. Elina had no clue what to comprehend. All she managed to hear was Seattle...scared...Ritwik'. Ritwik?
"Hold on...Ritwik as in Ritwik Sen? That senior from your school? The same guy who..?" Now she was wide awake.
"Yes" came her muffled reply.
"What the f**k is that bas***d doing there" Elina's tempered flared but she controlled it immediately. Afterall Sona is the main priority at that moment.
"Sona...listen to me..Relax...you are in USA...it's been seven freaking years and kisi ki koi himmat nahi hai kuch bhi karne ki...bas tu sambhal khud ko. I will do one thing..there is this very good friend of mine ..i will ask her to come and stay with you till the time I am not back to NYC"
"I am in Seattle...office work. Will be leaving for New York Tommorow"Sona was feeling hopeless now.
"ok...just relax then. Kuch ghante ki baat hai uske baad you will be around two thousand miles away from Seattle." Elina tried to calm her down.
"He is our company's client. Important client. I won't be able to avoid him.And Elina..he has not forgotten me either."Sonakshi explained.
"Why are you scared of him Sona. Itne time ke baad bhi you are still..."
"I work for Dev's company" She said quietly.
"Dev who? ...Don't tell me...DEV DIXIT? God!!!!! When?How?Not once you thought of mentioning this to me the whole time I was there right infront of you?" Elli was flabbergasted.
In response Sona just sobbed.
"Sona...whatever has happened in the last few weeks..tell me everything'
And Sonakshi obliged.
When she was done Elina had no idea what to say.
"Okay..do one thing. It must be night there. Stay in your room and kal apni flight lekar NY pahuch. Once you are there we will think ki kya karna hai ok? Maybe there is nothing to be so worked up about. But please don't be so scared Sona please."
"Hmmm..." Sona disconnected.
There is a very wise saying that one must never let the sadness of the past and the fear of future ruin the present happiness. But it's easier said than done. For Sona it felt like her world is going to collapse around her while she will just watch..helplessly...Again.
Dev was very happy today. Everything went well. His Seattle trip was a success and he was in the mood to celebrate. But Sonakshi was not picking up the call. He remembered her condition the last time she was infront of him. Is she all right?' he wondered while knocking her door.
When finally she opened the door his entire excitement evaporated in the thin air. She looked terrible.
"What happened???"
"Nothing...just not well"
"But hua kya?"He tried touching her forhead.
I always have this fear that one day you are going to discover that I am not as great as you once thought I was' She thought bitterly.
"You are a doctor or what? And kuch nahi hua...just want some peace"She said rudely while attempting to close the door.
But Dev was stronger than her. He just entered her room and locked the door from inside.
"You are behaving weirdly since the evening..Please tell me kya hua" The businessman was persistent.
"Dev you are so stubborn..when I said..."
"Accha main ziddi hu and tum kya ho fir?" he interrupted.
"You know the main problem is that you want to know everything"Sonakshi avoided his eyes.
"Why are you not looking at me?"he was quick to catch that.
"Because I don't want to...understand?" She tried to move away but he caught hold of her wrist.
"Sona look at me...please" he tried to make her face him.
"You were crying?"he asked
"NO!" She protested...a little too loudly ,thus refuting her own claim
Dev watched her bewildered! Not knowing what to do he just hugged her.
That was her last straw. She burst into tears again
"If it is because of yesterday night I am s..."He was feeling guilty by the second now.
"I wanted that..and I am not sorry" She managed.
"Ok...then stop crying. Bahar chalte hain...this is your first trip here right"
"Dev?"
"Hmmm..."
"Just hold me for some more time" She requested softly.
He did not say anything after that. They both stayed like that for god knows how long. She had missed him so much for all those years .If only time could stop.
Why do you love me so much Dev ..after everything' She thought.
The monsoon time in Delhi can be quite messy but that day Sona couldn't care less. She needed to meet Dev as soon as possible. She knew that she could never ever forgive herself for what she was about to do.
They were meeting after a week. Because of some problem in his family Dev had not been able to communicate with her since last few days and she was also out of station for the past few days.
Maybe because she was seeing him after so long or because of the hell she has been through since last few days ,she just could not stop herself from hugging him once he came. Dev was unusually quite.
Sona...today.." Dev's voice was shaky.
"Dev first let me say before I lose all my courage" She spoke rapidly.
"I want to break up with you." She said expecting a strong reaction from him.
He just watched her expressionlessly.
"Okay" He said after few minutes of silence. Turned back and was about to leave.
"Dev ..wait" her entire courage came crashing down.
"JUST GO OK!" For the first time in her life his voice was so rough to her.
Use koi fark bhi nahi para' She thought shakily.
Elina was waiting for her. Sona filled her in with whatever happened few minutes back.
"He didn't even ask me once the reason for all this" She could not control her tears now.
"I haven't even imagined my life without him Elina. But what else could I have done?What will I do now"She wailed.
Asha Bose came in just then. Seeing Sona in that condition she was concerened.
"Beta..dont cry...abhi to tumhe apne dost ko himmat deni hai. He needs you right now"
"Kaun dost maasi" Asked Elina.
"Dev"Asha Bose replied.
"Huh?"This was confusing.
"Arey usne bataya nahi...his dad died last night. Hum log unke yahan jaa rahe hain."
Sona didn't hear the rest. She was rushing on her way to his home.
"Why was she crying then?" Asha asked Elina.
Dev felt angry, betrayed and numb. But right now his family needed him so he had to act strong infront of all.
Sona did try to talk to him which he roughly ignored.
"Dev I am here as your friend..."
"Sonakshi Bose...you are not my friend. And please if you ever was my well wisher do not show me your face in life again"He said calmly yet firmly with as much hatred as possible.
"Sonakshi...tumhare papa ka transfer ho gaya hai Kolkata. We will be leaving next week" Everything which could go wrong just did.
Elina knew the entire story but Sonakshi had forbidden her to say anything.
"Dev will hate you for his entire life Sona"Elina was sad for her cousin. This was so not fair.
"Maybe yahi sahi hai" Sonakshi had done a lot of thinking since past few days.
"Tum usse sach kyu nahi batati?" Ever hopeful Elina tried again.
"Nahi...he already has lot of things to worry about. I have no right to burden him more. Maybe this was it. I wish I could say him last goodbye. If at all he asks about me then please give him this letter."
"Sona...he was angry ...he did not mean anything which he said"
"I know that. He loves me more than I can imagine."Sona smiled sadly.
"If he is not satisfied with the letter then? What if wo tumhe khojta hua Kolkata aa jaye?" knowing Dev this was very much possible .
"Then tell him that I am getting married"
"I am sorry Dev"
"For?" Dev was not sure if he heard it right.
"Everything"
"I am sure you have your reasons" He will definitely talk about everything..but not here...not like this.
"Poochoge nahi wo sab reasons?"Sona looked him in his eyes.
"Fir kabhi...I think we have enough time to discuss all that"
"How can you be so sure?"She asked
"If not then destiny would have never made us meet again"he smiled.
"Since when do you believe in destiny?"
Dev just kissed her forehead.
"I have started to" was his answer
"Are you all right now?"he asked her.
"hmmm"she managed.
"Ok then...it's pretty late. We have a flight to catch tomorrow"he reminded her.
"Yes"
The next morning Sonakshi woke up relaxed. Somehow she had a feeling that everything will be all right.
Hopefully this nightmare will end soon...she prayed.
Dev as usual was busy with his call while she observed the people in airport.
A man in his late 60s approached her and handed her a bouquet of tulips.
"These are for you mam"
"From whom?"she questioned.
The man only shrugged.
There was a note attached to it:
Orange tulips...your favorites. I hope you will like it.
