CHAPTER TWO
"Sona... relax relax..." Dev rubbed that small back of her as she puked in the basin. Sona held onto his arm as she leaned herself on him, suddenly feeling too drained. Dev held her firm as he helped her rinsing her mouth and carrying her in the bridal style, bought her to the bed. Placing her in a sitting position softly, he sat beside and pulled her in a hug.
"Relax... lagta hai tumhari tabiyat zyada kharab ho gayi hai... mai Dr. Sethi ko phone karta hoon..." he said as he took out his phone.
"Dev... meri vajah se poora din kharab ho jayega... I have ruined the whole festival... I don't know why is this happening with me..." Sona suddenly cried burying her face in the crook of his neck.
"Hey... pagal ho kya... Kuch bhi bol rahi ho... tumhari tabiyat kharab ho gayi toh isme tumhari fault hai kya... what's there to cry for..." Dev assured her kissing her hair intermittently.
"Let jao... let me call the doctor..." Dev made the call to his family doctor and turned to her again.
"Sona Dr. Sethi ek emergency me hai and she is not having much time off today but her secretary agreed to give me an emergency appointment after a couple of hours... tum chal sakti ho ya mai kisi aur doctor ko bulao..." Dev asked her in a tone dripping with care and love.
"Dev mai itni bhi weak nahi hui... I can come... vaise bhi we will go in the car na... don't worry.." she assured. He nodded and caressed her head to calm her. Seeing her eyelids drooping, he tucked her in and kissed her nose softly letting her sleep for a while.

"What do you feel...nauseant, mood swings, fatigue, cravings, desire to sleep more or not sleep at all..." Dr. Anita Sethi, their family doctor asked Dev and Sona
"Doctor... I don't know... I haven't noticed much... maybe all this is just fatigue or I may have an upset stomach... Its Durga Pooja I have been eating quite a lot of unhealthy oily foods these days... " Sona said quite unsure. She had been so excited the past few days that she had failed to notice how her health dulled.
"Doc I have noticed she has been sleeping a lot these days... she often sleeps sooner at night than she used to... and she also has become quite sensitive to smells... like today she puked after inhaling her favourite strawberry ice cream and she fell unconscious while working in the kitchen... and yes she is having definitely having a change in her taste buds... like she was relishing palak ki daal a couple of days ago which she usually hates the sight of... she may not have noticed but I have..." Dev gave an account of all the strange changes he had been noticing her quite for some time but hadn't voiced them.
"Dev... its just that us Daal ka taste thoda different tha and I liked it... doc he is just exaggerating things... you know how he is..." Sona retorted feeling a lil embarrassed on god knows what.
"Well dear you have quite an observant and super caring hubby..." she laughed and Dev bushed slightly.
"Yes the symptoms first looked like she is having an upset stomach but now that he has given a brief account of them, I think it's something else... so answer me some questions..." the doc said and Dev and Sona nodded. Dev leaned forward quite curious of her questions.
"Well tell me how long have you guys been sexually active without any protection..." the moment she asked the question Dev immediately leaned back and Sona blushed hard.
"Uhmmm... doctor... well its like... we haven't done it without any protection...I am on contraceptive pills..." Sona uttered with crimson cheeks.
"Yes doc... but is there an issue... coz we have a completely smooth love life..." Dev joined her concerned.
"Hmm... not that it's something to worry about but Sonakshi you please accompany the nurse and give her your urine samples. I need to do a couple of tests. You might need to wait for some 20 25 minutes..."

Sona and Dev anxiously waited outside the doctor's cabin since the last 20 minutes. Dev was worried like hell to know about what had happened to her and was continuously disturbing the receptionist at regular intervals by repeatedly asking "How much time will the reports need to be given..." making Sona exasperated.
"Dev relax... tumi akdum impossible..." she said holding his arm and making him sit beside her on the couch when he again started to get up.
"Mr and Mrs. Dixit... aapko Dr. Sethi ne andar bulaya hai..." the moment he heard a ward boy come to him, he sprang on his feet and literally pulled her inside with him.
"Please have a seat Dev...Sonakshi... I have got your reports..."
"And what is in the reports doctor...please tell..." Dev cut her mid sentence and urged like a baby urging for a candy.
"Well it's a good news for both of you...Sonakshi I wonder you being a doctor yourself haven't guessed it... but no worries... let me do the honours...You're pregnant...Congratulations!!" She said with a smile as she handed the reports to her. Sonakshi and Dev immediately looked at each other, surprise visible in their eyes.
"Sona..." was the only word that left his mouth as the news sinked in and turned his insides fuzzy. He was going to be a dad... and the feeling was something out of this world. Dev being overprotective hubby had imagined worst things for a moment when the doctor called them in, but not even for a fraction of a second had he thought he is going to get such a wonderful news. Sonakshi just realised the symptoms she was having, so much indicated a pregnancy but she had been so immersed in her preps for the pooja, she had not even given it a thought for a moment that she might be pregnant.
Sona opened the file and went through it...She is pregnant... Oh my god.. she is soon gonna have a baby of hers... a baby they had both created... a baby who was a proof of the love the felt for each other. The realisation immediately managed to warm her insides and as a result a bout of tears brimmed her eyes while her lips stretched into a wide beautiful smile.
Dev looked at his beautiful smiling wife. She was wonderful in every sense. He took the reports from her and went through...though he couldn't understand much but he didnt know why the word "positive" typed at a corner of the page managed to give him a happiness, which even a 100 crore deal couldn't have given. Emotions of all kind flooded his heart and the moment he saw her wet eyes, he smiled a bright 1000 watt smile and squeezed her hand.
"But doctor... I was on pills..."
"Had you consumed any other medicine with the pills?" The doc asked.
"Yes... I think I had a flu a few weeks back and I had taken sone medicine along.
"Sometimes contraceptive pills don't work when taken combined with some other medicine... maybe that's how you conceived..." she said while Sona was still contemplating on her words. She blushed hard remembering how they had danced in sudden October rain while returning from some party and then made crazy exhausting love after reaching home and the next day both had caught a flu. She was sure it was that night she conceived and the accident turned out to be the most beautiful surprise of her life.
"I can definitely understand how you guys might be feeling... Sonakshi you are around 5 and half weeks along... I have a patient in the ICU... I'll be back in a minute... then we can have a thorough routine check up..." Dr. Sethi smiled a motherly smile and moved out to give the couple some space and let them absorb the news.
"Sona... you heard that...yes yes yes yes... We are gonna have a baby..." he uttered happily moving his fists in air like a kid who ranked first in the class.
One, two, three and then the tears started streaming down her cheeks freely.
"Sonaaa... Kya hua... why are you crying... tum khush nahi ho..." he asked as he moved forward and cupped her face. She just buried her face into the crook of his neck and sobbed. Dev felt a little scared looking at the way she was sobbing into his neck, his shirt felt damp and that was when he couldn't take it. It always ripped his heart apart to see her like that.
"Oh god... sweetheart what happened... you don't want this baby..." it came out of his mouth even before he could stop himself and he felt a sharp stab in his heart at his own words. He wouldn't even want to imagine she didn't want their baby.
"Nooo Dev... tum aisa soch bhi kaise sakte ho..." Sona came out of his hug with a jerk.
"It's just that am so emotional... I am going to be a mother... I am so happy... I feel like... meri samajh nahi aa raha ki mai kya bolu... am just so happy Dev... I can't describe it in mere words... sabhi aasoo bure nahi hote... Kuch achhe bhi hote hai na..." she said looking like a mess of emotions while Dev felt her blabber to be the most adorable thing in the world.
"Oh god... tumi akdum impossible Sona... maine kya kaha tha... achhe bure... mujhe tumhare koi aasoo pasand nahi... this is the time to celebrate...Oh god... mai papa banne wala hoon... and how wonderful that sounds..." Dev said in a voice filled with awe as he wiped her cheeks. She smiled and he very tenderly kept a hand on her flat tummy. Sona found it to be the cutest thing in the world.
"Dev... am so happy... hamara bachha... tum Durga pooja par mujhe isse achha koi gift nahi de sakte the... thank you so much.." she couldn't help say covering his hand with hers and he pulled her in a hug.
"Looks like I should have come a lil later..." Dr. Sethi teasingly uttered as she entered her cabin. Dev and Sona immediately parted with a blush.
"No doc... just that she had become so emotional..." he trailed off with a shrug.
"Ah... thats very common... you are bound to be emotional when you get this news...you guys are better... I have seen couples who scream and cry with happiness and excitement as soon as they get the news..." Dr. Sethi said with a small laugh making then chuckle.
"To be honest... even I feel like doing that... just hospital etiquettes ne mujhe rok rakha hai..." Dev said making good them chuckle at his child like excitement. His face was glowing with the proud happiness of a would be dad and Sona's heart had a sudden urge to kiss this wonderful man who happened to be her husband.
"Okay so let's have a check up..." the doc said as she took her to the examination room while Dev followed them.

"You are completely healthy Sonakshi...BP, pulse rate everything. You will soon hit six weeks and your morning sickness has started.. you might go through a stronger version of the weakness and quesiness you experienced today but you need not worry. Drinking ginger tea might help... And you can follow your daily lifestyle..." Dr. Sethi said as they came out of the room and took their seats.
"Doc... will she be sick the whole of nine months and what do you mean by daily lifestyle... you don't mean she can work... right?? How can she... she is pregnant na..." Dev asked impatiently.
"Mr. Dixit... she is pregnant and not sick... she can work, do the normal daily chores she does and everything other than running around or any heavy work... Infact thoda bohot kaam karna is good for her health... and as for morning sickness... yes it starts around six weeks and stays upto 24 to 25 weeks..." she explained while Sona rolled her eyes at her curious innocent hubby.
"But..."
"Dev... tum bhi na... doctor... anything else we need to know..." she asked shutting him up while he pouted making the doc smile at the couple. She was yet to see such an adorable couple who cares for the other more than themselves.
"Yes doctor... what are the dos and don'ts we have to keep in mind..." he asked curiously.
"Dos and Don'ts..." the doctor chuckled a little and continued.. "Being a nutritionist you very well know ki ab tumhe healthy diet lena hai... Full of protein and vitamins. Drink a lot of water and fresh fruit juices and eat at regular intervals. Include at least one citrus fruit in your diet and drink pasteurised milk at least once daily. Thoda zyada khaana shuru karo coz ab tum do logo ke liye khaogi, do light exercises like walks and breathing exercises..." the doc said and smiled.
"Doc... thats her problem... vo khaati hi nahi hai... hamaari koi baat nahi sunti khaane ke maamle mein... she is very conscious of her figure... please tell her stop that now..." Dev complained.
"Sonakshi... you have to stop that now... eat your fill...and yes she might have odd cravings at even odder hours of the day... and you should let her eat everything she desires... except things like eggs, papaya, unpasteurised dairy products etc... rest she herself knows... I'll prescribe some vitamins and now you just enjoy your pregnancy..."
That statement made both of them to smile. They were indeed going to enjoy each and every moment of this blissful phase into each other's arms.
"Doctor... I wanted to ask... I mean...can we..." Sona nervously looked at the doctor not knowing how to put forward her query. She being from the medicine field, knew that there is nothing to shy from in front of a doctor but she couldn't help it.
"I know what you wanna ask... yes... you can have a completely normal love life till the first trimester ends and the rest I will tell you in the next session..." she uttered with a smile making her blush while Dev passed on a shrewd tongue-in-cheek smile to her.
"Now you guys need to come after 3 weeks... we will have your first ultrasound scan... where you can have a look at your baby for the first time..." she had started saying only to be cut by Dev again.
"Really... I can see my baby... I mean that's wonderful..." he said making her smile again.
"Yes, you can see your baby... and I know you might be super excited... its very normal for new parents to be... now there is a responsibility for you Dev... pamper her as much as you can because after 7 and half months you guys will have someone to pamper to death..." she said as she handed them the prescription. Dev nodded and pulled her to him, sliding an arm across her waist. She smiled and they left the hospital.

"Dev..."
"Hmm... bolo...Kuch chahiye..." he asked as he stopped humming, turning to Sona when she called him after putting the seat belt on. Opening the belt she landed into his arms in a span of a second making him chuckle.
"Are... Kya hua..." he asked caressing her hair.
"Kuch nahi... just needed to tell you that I love you..." she mumbled coming out a little from his arms.
"Love you too... much more than you can think... and now even more because of the gift you are giving me..." he uttered kissing her on the lips.
"We are giving each other..." she returned the kiss.
"Chalo jaldi ghar chalo... sab ko batana hai... maa will start dancing out of happiness..." she said backing off.
"Abhi nahi... Kal Navami hai... Kal visarjan ke baad sabko batayenge... Kyuki jaise hi tumhari pregnancy ki news sabko pata chalegi, uske baad sabka dhyaan tum par zyada hoga and pooja par kam.. and I don't want that... I know how much you love this festival..." he said making her emotional once again.
"Tumhare mood swings bhi na... ab nahi rogi tum..." he warned mock angry and she nodded like a school kid.

"Dev murti itni bhaari bhi nahi hai... Sonakshi uthana chahti thi na visarjan ke waqt... use uthaane de na..." Ishwari said to Dev as they all started leaving for visarjan. She had heard Sona say numerous times that she always does the visarjan at her place and will do this year too.
"Maa... rehne dete hai na.. vaise bhi vo itna kaam kar rahi hai... thak gayi hogi.. mai utha leta hoon na..." Dev fumbled making Sona suppress her giggle. He had strictly prohibited her to do the visarjan as the idol of Durga maa wasn't so light that she can lift it in a pregnant condition. As per their plan, they had decided to disclose the news the moment they reach home after visarjan.
"Are par... Uski ichha thi na... karne de use..."
"Uhm... vo..." he fumbled.
"Maa... maine hi in se kaha ki yeh murti utha le... meri tabiyat theek nahi lag rahi thi..." she came to his rescue and he let a relieved sigh. They had been through so many instances like this past 24 hours when they had to toil hard to hide her pregnancy news and Dev's pampering had made it worst. For example that morning he had himself made her a cup of ginger tea with the help of Internet, to relieve her of her morning sickness and all the family members were dumbstruck to see Dev in the kitchen. He had them all wonder for the reason behind his over caring weird behaviour.

"Kya hua... aise kyu khade ho tum dono... Sonakshi jao aaram karo beta... tumhari tabiyat kharab hai na.." Ishwari asked seeing Dev and Sona struggling standing across the kitchen counter. They both were standing beside each other and fiddling with their fingers as if nervous to tell something.
"Dev tumi bolo na.." Sona urgingly whispered to him and his eyes popped out.
"Sona... are you crazy... mai maa ko kya bolunga... come on... tum batao na..." he whispered back. They all had just returned after the visarjan and wanted to reveal the news but were too shy to say anything directly.
"Dev mai kaise bolu... aur kya bolu..." she said in lil high pitched defending voice which made its way to Ishwari's ears.
"Kya kaise bolu... Kya khusur phusur laga rakhi hai tum dono ne... batao na kya batana hai..." she asked as she moved around the room and took a seat on the couch.
"Maa... vo mai... I mean Sona... mera matlab hai... hum... mai...vo..." Dev blabbered not knowing how to reveal the news.
"Offo... Dev... beta tu mujhe kuch batane ke liye kab se itna hichkichaane laga... bata na... Sona tu bata de beta..." she urged lovingly.
"Maa... vo... aapko batana tha ki... Dev... mera matlab hai mai... mai... mai...vo.." Sona just wasn't finding a way to reveal it in a less explicit way when an idea struck her mind.
"Hamare ghar me bohot jald ek chhota sa Dev aane wala hai..." she trailed off knowing Ishwari won't need to bear anything else to get what she wanted to express.
