The past few episodes have given us such rich insights into the complex inner-lives of the Dixit family, especially with regards to Dev, Neha and Ishwari. I love the way the stories that were running parallel thus far, are now merging once again with the issue of marriage rearing its ugly head. The Dixits maintain a very delicate balance of goodwill in their family, mostly by avoiding discussion of real, and sensitive issues; they all try to keep each other free from worry and it was working as long as Dev was happy in his work with this deal nearing completion, Neha was given time, freedom, and guidance to do something for herself, and Ishwari was happy with the satisfaction of her children. But with Mr. Gujral's proposal, they are all thrown into chaos once again.

*sigh* Ishwari: I have never encountered a character that I feel so much sympathy and exasperation for all at the same time. On the one hand, she is mature, compassionate and wise, but she can also be so stubborn and childish, and is also mired in some very arcane attitudes about the correct protocol for raising male vs. female children. It always amazes me how well she can read her kids' feelings and then irritates me to no end that she often does nothing with the knowledge she has. This is especially true with Neha. She is always able to sympathise with Neha in front of others (e.g. Ranveer today and Dev in the past) but is unable to apply that knowledge in a way that is productive for Neha herself. I think that's because the Dixits simply don't discuss anything real or profound with each other, which creates this constant hypocrisy in the way their household runs.

Dev benefits the most from this hypocrisy because it allows him to believe that he is doing everything he can for his family just by providing for them materially; he can throw himself into his work and see everything as black and white, right and wrong without often having to consider the grey area of feelings and emotions. Ishwari has worked very hard for a long time to maintain this facade for Dev so he can concentrate on becoming a man of means, but as a result, it has distanced him from the emotions of his loved ones, as well as his own feelings to the point where he sees emotion as a luxury he can't afford. After all, there's no emotion that can't be bought out for the right price!

Neha bears the heaviest burden of the hypocrisy on the other hand, which is why she keeps trying so hard to dismantle it with her cutting, cynical truth-bombs. I am not at all denying that Dev suffered, but his suffering yielded tangible and gratifying rewards, both personal and professional, along with the hardships. Dev had a chance to discover who he was, what he stood for and be recognized and appreciated for it. That's what Neha wants a chance to do and even now, all she is really being offered in the form of a future is marriage. Since she doesn't want to assume the responsibility of marriage and a household right now, the condition that Dev will only marry after her feels like another instance of the family demanding her happiness in exchange for Dev's.

Into this complex mix, three different people are introduced: Sona, Ranveer and Natasha. Ever since she was introduced, we see Natasha noting minute details of the Dixit family in order to endear herself to them, but these are all superficial observations, part of the facade that the Dixits put up, even for themselves. Sona, on the other hand, notices and caters to things about Dev that even Ishwari doesn't totally understand, like his sleeping pills. If Dev were to marry Natasha, she would become one more person for whom he'd feel compelled to be a super-hero, one more person to protect from the ugly realities he faces. Sona on the other hand, as evidenced by the phone call in the precap and so many instances before, is someone who he has come to trust with the part of himself that doesn't have all the answers all the time.

That's what Sona and Ranveer have in common. Just by being themselves, and with wit and patience, they managed to break down some of the Dixits' defensive walls without Dev or Neha being any the wiser; if they had known it was happening, they never would have allowed it! But what makes this moment in the story so interesting is that each love story has battled its way into the very emotional core of the Dixit family, where Neha knows she likes/loves Ranveer but holds herself back from expressing it because of practical concerns and Dev expresses his affection for Sona freely (I believe he's been lattoo for quite a while now) in tangible ways but doesn't question the feelings that drive his actions, choosing to hide behind easy explanations. In acknowledging their respective feelings, The processes that Neha and Dev need to undergo to accept their respective feelings will rock the foundations of their family and signal a major paradigm shift.

Wow very well written post
Agree with almost everything . Ishwari is not bad but like every human being she has some flaws . Yes I feels for Neha character more than Dev because she didn't taste/ get anything in terms of perks against her sacrifice and hardwork . If you observe Dev and Iswari are most of time in praising each other and emotional towards each other sacrifices . But Ishwari is not at sentimental towards Neha's sacrifice . Although she did mentioned about Neha hardwork and sacrifice during marriage fiasco but not like everyday. Whereas she is always on " Dev has done sacrifice " mode .
Loved how you mentioned difference between sona and Natasha as life partner . Dev can't share his childhood memories with Natasha considering she won't be able to understand the struggle of life without money . Like how she said - she didn't believe that sona doesn't have passport and she thinks that sona is joking .
Dev and Neha need someone who can heal their wounds with love. They don't need extra- ordinary people in life but someone with whom they can share bitter stories of life . Someone with whom they can smile while remembering their childhood . Someone who understands the pain of struggle , life without money .

Wow! You said it all so beautifully, but I especially loved the last line in bold

And I think you are spot on with regards to Neha's biggest issue. Ishwari will acknowledge Neha and the sacrifices she made for the family only in private and never in front of Neha herself. I so distinctly remember one of the first episodes when Dev was praising Ishwari's dedication and she was talking about that silver cup with Dev's name on it. Nowhere did either of them mention Neha, and yet none of this would have been possible had Neha not done her share of the work with full sincerity.

On the other hand, I love Neha's relationship with Ria. I can't wait until the day Ria becomes even more successful than Dev and gives Neha all the credit! 😉

Wow.. you have beautifully analyzed the entire plot of the show. Ishwari's character is somehow symbolic of the gender bias that is prevalent even today.. she is happy that neha is learning English now, when they have the means to afford it but even today when it comes to wanting the best for her children, it is always Dev that crops up in her mind.. I love how neha is unconventional and stands up to both Dev and Ishwari.. Both sona and neha's characters are so complex and beautiful.. I wish they had more scenes together as I feel Neha would be the first to understand that Dev needs Sonakshi in his life who understands him at a deeper level and not Natasha is almost his twin.. like they say, two peas in a pod died of inertia!!

Wow!
What a brilliant post...I actually read some lines of your post more than once because of the words you chose to frame them.

Very insightful and profound...I didnt realize until you said it that Sona and Ranveer have actually managed to gently tear down the innumerous walls, that Dev and Neha had built around their hearts, just by being themselves and by giving Dev and Neha time and space to open up at their own pace and comfort.

Sona brings out a side of Dev which probably he had forgotten existed in him because of the pile up of responsibilties over his head. With his family, he always has be to be the level headed one, the responsible one, the mature one, the problems-solving one.

But with Sona he can just be...himself. He can unload whatever issue is troubling him with ease knowing that she would have the solution for it. With her, he doesnt have to be the responsible one...and he doesnt even realize that yet.

He is yet to realize how Sona has gently woven a path into his life, not his mother's, and has become an integral part of it. Ishwari, who can read her son like a book, who knows everything about him , is unaware of a very important fact about him...his sleeping pills. But Sona does...and he didnt feel the least bit uncomfortable about her finding them or didnt even doubt that she would go tell his mother. That is how much he trusts her.

She effects him in away that he cant really ignore...like if she says something, he ends up listening to her whether he wants to or not...for example the sleeping pills. When he felt restless and gets up to have the pills, he couldnt help but remember her words. Try as he might, he couldnt ignore them . In the end, he says, "Ab main yeh bhi nahi kha sakta"...something like that. Even though she wasnt there and she wouldnt even have known if he had taken the pills, he couldnt disobey her.

Till now, only Ishwari had commanded that kind of submission from him.

For years, he has been addicted to coffee but no one had the guts to stop him. Ishwari did but he hardly listened to her. Only Sona managed to actually reduce his intake of coffee.

Ishwari clearly is not happy with the idea of Natasha and Dev's match but for the sake of his business, she is willing to put her uneasiness aside. Right now, she knows she holds the power to make or break this match. But, later...when Dev will finally start thinking with his heart rather than his mind and the deal goes off because of his feelings for Sona, like you said, it will rock the foundations of the Dixit family.

P.S Love the title of your post!

Couldn't agree more, especially on the whole Dev and Natasha thing. By how he interacts with Natasha now, indicates he'll always have this cover, this facade that makes him look strong (not physically but emotionally) but in actuality he isn't. He'll keep pressing things in till the point he breaks. Slowly, but surely that facade is breaking with Sona, and I think it's beautiful how they're showing him opening up his worries and stresses to her, he can't always carry everything around with him. I hope they somehow make him question his actions towards Sone like everyone else does, then start realizing it's not just care, but a liking and comfort. I don't think they should go right for love between them, I hope they first show their realized and accepted attraction towards each other, getting to know each other better, then fall in love, then after a while get married. I hope they show the realistic point that happens in real life, no one just automatically falls in love and gets married, it takes time. I think they have to show more on Dev's friendship angle towards Sona building up into more instead of showing her daydreaming and being sad about him. I think it'll be interesting how he justifies his "friendship" with Sona😆. All in all, I think even if Natasha and Dev got married it wouldn't last, plus I don't think CV's would make such a stupid move of marrying him off for a deal. It'll be too dramatized which I hope never is the case in this show.
