Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh come together... for the kids

Jamal Shaikh
Sunday, November 20, 2005 20:56 IST

For the children's sake: Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan.

Love for your children can make you do more than you'd imagine. Close on the heels of baby Samaira being the get-back-together factor in Karisma and Sanjay Kapur's lives, actor Saif Ali Khan and wife Amrita were seen together at the annual day function of Dhirubhai Ambani International School on Saturday night. Saif and Amrita's daughter Sarah studies in 5th grade in the school.

"Amrita Singh came in earlier and took a seat in the fourth row of the auditorium," said Karuna Latish, a guardian who was present at the event.

"The school doesn't differentiate between film star parents and non film star ones. So when Saif came in, his seat was further into the audience. He kept coming in front though and when the seat beside Amrita got vacant, he grabbed it. The two spent most of the evening together."

Saif and Amrita went through a bitter divorce a little over a year ago after a 10-year-long marriage. The bone of contention was apparently Rosa, an Italian girl Saif was seeing. While the separation was mostly hush-hush, certain messy facts came out when Amrita broke her silence on a TV channel and Saif reciprocated in his own way

Meet Nimmo's new lover boy...

Hiten Tejwani replaces Cezanne Khan as the man in Nimmo's life

Reena Thapar Kapoor

After Cezanne Khan opted out of Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka, Balaji Telefilms
had been under a lot of stress to find his replacement on the show.
But finally the soap factory has zeroed in on their blue-eyed-boy
Hiten Tejwani to play Nimmo's love interest, Kunal.

This will make it Tejwani's fourth show with Balaji. (The other
three being Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kavyanjali and Kesar
where his track is over) The association has certainly worked in
Tejwani's favour as it was Ekta Kapoor herself who recommended him
for the role. Confirming the news, Tejwani says, "I'm supposed to
sign the contract today. I was always game for playing Kunal in Kya
Hoga… but was waiting for the confirmation. Since they have made an
official announcement about me being a part of the show, I guess I
am on."

Apart from Hiten, Mohit Malik (from Palkhee) has also been roped in
to essay Vikrant's role in Kya Hoga… "I've played a small part in
Palkhee but this will be the first time that I'd be doing a full
fledged role in a show. I'm looking forward to it," smiles Mohit.
The model-turned-actor has endorsed various products in the past.
It's only been a year since I came from Delhi. The minute I landed
here, I knew I'd work with Balaji some day. But didn't know it would
happen so soon." Mohit adds that he has already informed the makers
of Palkhee about being unavailable. "We're scheduled to start
shooting from December 7. I'm willing to work 24/7 for the show
because it is just the beginning of my career. Anyway my role in
Palkhee had almost ended. So, I'm all for Balaji now."

They are the hottest twosomes on television. Eijaz Khan and Natassha of 'Kkavyanjali 'and Iqbal Khan and Neha Bamb of 'Kaisa Yehh Pyaar Hai' speak about their on-screen chemistry

THE 'KKAVYANJALI' PAIR

First impression

Eijaz: I entered 'Kkavyanjali' as a replacement. So I was nervous whether I would be able live up to the expectations of the unit and the audience. I had met Natassha (Anjali) earlier but didn't know her too well. But I found her to be quiet and sweet. She had a naughty look about her too. Her expressive eyes and smile attracted me.
Natassha: Eijaz (Kavya)is a wonderful co-star. He has brought a refreshing change to the character. At first I wondered whether I would be comfortable with the new actor. But I found him to be very co-operative.

Chemistry
Eijaz: We rehearse a bit before the shots and also discuss the scenes with an open mind. That has helped us bring spontaneity to our acting.
Natassha: We know how to make each other comfortable and that has worked for us.
Plus
Ejaz: She is very open to suggestions and helps me take the right decisions on the sets.
Natassha: He is a thorough professional on the sets. Off the sets, he is a lovely person to talk to. I like the way he stays focused on things.

Ilove playing rash characters

Says Amrita Singh of Kkavyanjali and her forthcoming film Kalyug

Subhash K Jha

Amrita Singh has never felt better. After playing Nitya in Kkavyanjali, her career is once again on an even keel.

"Everything is working out just fine…My television serial Kavyanjali started badly. I got scared. Shit, was I going to be a flop right at the start of my fresh lease as an actress? Fortunately, I had a gritty producer Ekta Kapoor who took it upon herself to turn the show around. And now Kkavyanjali is rocking in the TRPs."

The comeback queen says she enjoys playing the shrew on Kkavyanjali. "She's such a comic bitch, I thoroughly enjoying playing her."

Another high point in Amrita's life is Kalyug, her comeback vehicle, "I was initially very uncomfortable with the idea of playing the businesswoman who runs a po*nographic portal. Obviously this woman Simi Roy was far removed from me. But I guess the topicality tilted the scale in the role's favour. I guess the challenge for me at the moment is to play characters that allow me to be what I am not."

Amrita says that there is no dearth of movie offers, "But I chose Kalyug. Mukesh Bhatt just called me one day out of the blue and offered me the role, I was part of the Bhatts' Vishesh Films when their banner was launched with Kubzaa. Now many films later, I'm back in their Kalyug. When Mukesh offered me Kalyug, I very arrogantly asked him if it was worth my while. He said he wouldn't have offered me the role otherwise."

Amrita says she enjoys playing fiery and aggressive roles, "Though I'm not really any of these things in real life. I never was. That was an image. I'm never bad-tempered and rash. But I enjoy playing such women. It's great to be back on the large screen, more so since Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt are producing Kalyug. I enjoy the challenge of playing unusual women now when I've nothing to prove and nothing to lose. Working in a film like it gives me a chance to do something I believe in. And the whole team was so young. It's so nice to work with young people. I'm learning so much from them."

Amrita is looking at several scripts, "I'll be doing another film early next year. Both my serial and Kalyug are great highs."

She refuses to react to the gossip about her, "I'm a product and if anyone gets mileage out of mentioning my name, so be it."

Tidbits from Karisma's janamdin party
By: Tushar Joshi
December 22, 2005

Karisma Tanna with Karan Patel and Sachin Sharma
Pic: Yogen Shah
When Karisma Tanna sent out personal messages to a few select people, from her phonebook, inviting them for her birthday party on December 20, we were convinced that the whole world would turn up for the party.

But to our surprise, the bash turned out to be a very private and a classy affair.

Attendees consisted of her close actor friends (from the Kyunki gang) and those from her other daily, Paalkhi (Zee).

Trendsetters

Like always, Gauri Pradhan and Hiten Tejwani stuck to each other. Gauri always leaves her Nandini image behind and comes dressed in trendy western outfits. And Hiten is a die-hard party animal, and loves to hit the dance floor.

Shooting rut

Anita walked in by herself in a brown ensemble. When asked about her Kavyanjali co-star Eijaz Khan, she said, "I think he isn't keeping too well." Perhaps shooting day in and day out is taking a toll on both of them.

Welcome change

There were two actors who turned out to be the surprise package of the evening. Pallavi Kulkarni, on a prolonged break, post Kehta Hai Dil; and Rajeev Khandelwal, who, for a change, has forgotten about work and is seen chilling out at parties these days.

The two seemed to be engrossed in a long conversation for quite some time. When asked, Pallavi said, "We were just catching up and exchanging pleasantries.' On the other hand, Rajeev, who usually is mellow and reserved, was seen hopping around, meeting and hugging people. A welcome change for sure.

One at a time

Karisma's Paalkhi co-star, Abhay Vakil, was brooding about the early morning shoot he had to go for the next day. The actor, who has been getting offers from other shows, prefers to stick to one daily at a time. "At the moment, Paalkhi is getting all my time. If something interesting turns up, I will think about it." Abhay will be going to the US for the festive celebrations this year.

Cake ritual

Birthday girl Karisma was spotted asking people to join her on the dance floor. However, during the cake cutting, she made it clear that no one should spoil her make-up by smearing the cake on her face. And no one dared!

Late Latif

In her usual style, Balaji head honcho Ekta Kapoor made a late entry post midnight. Creative head of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Sandiip Sikcand, was also spotted

Anita Hassanandani
Despite shooting for a Balaji daily (Kavyanjali), Anita Hassanandani gets seven days off from her schedule to head south for her second Kannada film.

Anita, who plays the lead role of Anjali in the Star Plus daily, has worked in almost a dozen south Indian films in the past.

Southside story

"In the south, they are extremely hard working and professional. Their style of working is very different from Bollywood. Everyone comes on time, finishes the shoot and leaves. The job satisfaction is another obvious reason for accepting these films."

Talking about her latest film, titled Gundagali Kumar Rama, she said, "It is a historical, where I play Ratna — a poor girl who is sought after by the king of the dynasty she's living in.

The film has its usual dose of romance and drama in it. The twist in the plot happens when both the king and his son fall in love with me. I say yes to the king's proposal, as I am unaware of his son's feelings for me. In the end, I commit suicide by drinking poison."

Costume drama

The Kannada film will be ready for release by August next year. Describing her look, the actress said, "I wear loads of accessories and very ethnic, traditional outfits. It was fun dressing up for the role."

Isn't language a barrier in such projects? "Not really. There is adequate help, with assistants prompting and helping with dialogues. Also, by now, I can speak decent Telugu, but I still have to work on my Kannada."

All work, no play

On the small screen, Anjali's sufferings continue at the hands of the evil Nitya (Amrita Singh), in Kavyanjali. "After my miscarriage, there will an interesting track happening between Nitya and me," she explained.

Suprisingly, Anita will be working on New Year's Eve. "I am planning to perform at a stage show. I like working and keeping myself busy. I have anyway been partying throughout this year."

TV stars on their New Year resolutions
By: A hitList Correspondent
December 24, 2005

Smriti Z Iraani
(Tulsi in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi)

My New Year is going to be spent entirely with my family. I am not a party person, so I won't be partying anywhere. Also, I will be very busy with my political meetings for the BJP. I would be working on January 1, as I am a very superstitious person and believe in working on the first day of the New Year, as well as my birthday. I just hope that the TRPs of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi remain steady and apart from that, my daughter will be going to school in the New Year. So, I wish that her first day at school goes well and that she adjusts to her school and wish that both my kids do well. What else can a mother ask and pray for her children?

Saakshi Tanwar
(Parvati in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii)

I will be taking a 10-day break from work starting from December 22 To January 2. I will be going to my hometown, Alwar and spending time with my family.

My brother had a baby boy in November, but due to work commitments I have not been able to spend time with him, which I intend to do now. My New Year's resolution till now, has mainly been to stay in shape and be fit and try to lose some weight, but this year, I'll think of something else to do.

Anita
(Anjali in Kavyanjali)

I am a workaholic and am planning to do a show on New Year's.

I love working and believe that if I work on New Year's Day, I will keep working for the whole coming year. My New Year's resolution is to lose about three-four kilos and keep fit for the whole year.

Ronit Roy
(Mihir in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Mr Bajaj In Kasautii Zindagi Kay)

I will be attending a wedding around this time and would be spending New Year's with my family. This New Year's, I will chill out with family members and watch fire works. I might go out of town as I have worked the whole year without taking a break. I will bring in the New Year with my wife, daughter and mother.

Hiten Tejwani
(Karan in Kyunki saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi)

This New Year's, I am planning to go to Goa with my wife and chill out. I don't usually plan anything ahead and in advance. I do everything at the spur of the moment. Maybe, both of us will see places and have a candlelight dinner and just chill. I do not believe in New Year's resolutions. I believe that one has to do whatever he has to do. So then why wait for the New Year to do what you have to do?

Juhi Parmar
(Kumkum in Kumkum)

No plans, really. My group of friends is figuring out how to go to Goa, as we are never free together at the same time. If not, then I shall go out and party the whole night through.

I am looking forward to taking a four-day break where I will not be shooting. I do not make any resolutions as it is very difficult to stick and adhere to them.
