Plots are pass. Nowadays serials are more obsessed with fashion shows, jewellery launches, film premieres and item numbers than minor things like storylines. Viewers can't seem to get enough and every second soap has jumped on the stage show bandwagon. All they have to do is collect some models, Indian Idol finalists or actors from sister serials and throw them on stage under the flimsiest of excuses. Last week in Kkusum (Sony) we saw a bevy of television lovelies (including Karishma Tanna, Nigar Khan and Mini Mathur) taking to the stage to showcase a line of jewellery. Not to be left out hero Abhay (Anuj Saxena) underwent a quick makeover and sauntered in as well. We couldn't quite say what exactly he was showcasing unless it was the glittering stud in his ear.
It was, however, left to Kkavyanjali (Star Plus) to put on the grandest show of them all. In a veritable burst of small screen power, actors from several Balaji serials (including Kaisa Ye Pyar Hai's Angad and Kripa, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii's Monalika, K Street Pali Hill's Smriti and Kahiin To Hoga's Akshat) performed on stage. The onlookers — the cast of Kkavyanjali and assorted junior artistes — seemed to enjoy the spectacle except for Nitya Nanda (Amrita Singh). The lady looked positively apoplectic because one of the acts (a triangular complication performed by Aryan and Shruti of Kahaani and Mooohini of Kyunki) was a replica of what had happened in her own life.
Balloons, bubbly and two personable young men — Eijaz Khan and Hiten Tejwani — added to the ambience. Heroine Anjali (Natassha) hung around, wearing her standard sulky expression. Are we expected to believe that viewers voted for this sullen creature over a vivacious young thing like Miilee in the favourite naya sadasya category at the recent Star Parivaar Awards? Despite reports in the Press that Miilee was leading by a huge margin, when D-Day arrived it was the perpetually petulant Anjali who sashayed home with the trophy. It certainly pays dividends being Ekta Kapoor's ewe lamb. And by thanking Shobha 'Aunty' Kapoor at least a thousand times, Anjali ensured that she would get an award at the next SPA too. Clever girl.
