Kituu kya kya janti hai?
Ami Trivedi speaks about her soap and how it has affected her TV-viewing habits
Swapna Nair
AMIDST cloned faces programmed to carry off fake eyelashes, atrocious lip colours and heavy accessories with effortless ease, there's one that stands out as a 'misfit' for the small screen. Not just because of the innocence it exudes, but also because it emotes like real-life faces would. That's 23-year-old Ami Trivedi for you, effervescent and predictably modest. The lead character of Kituu Sabb Jantii Hai on Sahara One confesses, ''Playing a journalist has been an eye-opener. I never knew the humane side of the fourth estate. I thought the media just aired whatever they were invited for. Infact, it's only after Kituu that I even began watching TV.''
Having said that, she also tells you why she's all game for sting operations, especially since there's going to be one in the serial too, to expose the rape accused. ''If some injustice has taken place and it gets exposed with a sting operation, then why not? But intruding into someone's private space and pinching them till they speak what you want to listen, is certainly not recommended,'' she opines with reference to the casting couch sting operation by a TV channel. Daughter of theatre veteran Tushar Trivedi, Ami has also been actively involved in Gujarati theatre. With eight plays to her credit, this graduate in Physics from Jaihind College Mumbai, decided to take a plunge into television when her father's friend told her about the audition for Kituu. Born and brought up in Mumbai, she speaks Gujarati very fluently and is a native of Palitana. She's even lent her voice for The Incredibles along with SRK. But she was on a high when director Priyadarshan appreciated her role. ''That's only because Puneet Gandhi, who's associated with Kituu, works as associate director with Priyadarshan. He coaxed him to watch the serial,'' she reasons. However, she tries convincing us Kituu is ''the only'' project she's working on. ''No,no! Ekta Kapoor has not called me up yet...I really have no offer from any production house. Obviously, everyone knows that with Kituu taking up 30 days of the month, I can't give them a commitment. So I have only compliments, no offers,'' she gushes. Ami doesn't really feel any work pressure, since she's always excited about the shoot, she says. Referring to the Kuljeet Randhawa suicide, the youngster says, ''I do not think it is work pressure alone that drives someone to take the extreme step. After all, we are here to put in hard work and become famous. It is more about not having an emotional support, I guess.'' Her best critic, she says, is her father, who despite being a seasoned actor ends up feeling that "I am living the character!." ''He tells me, 'Earlier, I thought your boss was wrong, but now I feel he's right. And I have to remind him, 'Dad, he's not my boss,''' she smiles. On the sets, she's particularly fond of her on-screen mom, Shama Deshpande. ''I address her as maa, even when we are not shooting. She's fond of me too,'' she avers. Unlike girls her age, especially those from the television industry, Ami is not fond of ''looking fashionable.'' Even parties don't entice her, ''except those with college friends.'' ''These TV parties are so stressful. You have to look good, behave in a very polished manner,'' she says. So what does she do during her free time?

''Free time is very rare. But if I do get it, I sleep, go out with my cousin for a walk by the beach. I am still waiting for my holiday,'' she says.
