Online junta support?

A scene from Kis Des Mein Hai...
A scene from Kis Des Mein Hai...

Continuous inflow of new faces in TV industry is making life tough for older actors who carry baggage of their past shows. Practically every show has at least one newcomer making his/her television debut. Now older actors are increasingly finding it difficult to get important roles in serials.

For most of them, one of the common and effective ways of getting work is networking with casting directors. But some actors have found a new way. They are banking on their so-called fans' support on social networking sites to get work in serials.

Recently, Tanuj Garg who heads Balaji's film division was flooded with messages to cast Harshad Chopra and Aditi Gupta (of Kis Des Mein Hai Mera Dil fame) in Balaji serials. Tanuj had to clarify to the actors' fans that he doesn't look after Balaji serials.

Sony's business head Sneha Rajani says she got lots of similar messages for Hiten Tejwani and his wife Gauri.

"It's a big nuisance and it annoys me no end," fumes Sneha who ignores such requests. While she wonders whether they are real fans or chamchas acting on behalf of actors, Sneha says such requests don't really work. "Casting is not done on the basis of buzz on social networking sites.

That's not our benchmark for popularity because mass entertainment channels don't cater to people who use internet sites. Our audience is different and we have our own research and independent team to look into casting requirements," she explains.

While senior TV director and ex-Sony fiction head Sanjay Upadhyay says whether the online buzz is genuine or rigged, he thinks it doesn't benefit actors. "All big production companies have casting directors who are well aware of actors' availability, equity and sincerity. But the channel's brief is final," he adds. Aditi says actors have a huge fan base online.

"They want to see their favourite actors and on screen couples on different channels. I am not an Internet buff but I am aware of the support I get from fans on social networking sites. However, it doesn't help," she admits.

Hiten too admits that online support doesn't help in getting roles but online popularity is an added bonus. "It is an indication of how popular an actor is. So it works in some ways. At least it keeps you in limelight," he says..

Harshad Chopda

He has a smile that melts hearts. He has body and persona that exude magnetism and change his fans into fanatics. Who are we talking about? Well, none other than handsome and charming Harshad Chopda. Fans have been eagerly waiting to see him back on the tube after his last show Dharampatni went off air in a jiffy. Well, the wait is now over as the man, who personifies awesomeness, is all set to enthrall the masses as Raghav in Saubhagyavati Bhava on Life OK. In a candid interview with Tellychakkar.com, Harshad talks about his character, his link-ups and more. Excerpts:

Tell us something about your role in Saubhagyavati Bhava?

Ohh… that's a tough one. Where do I start from? Let's see… Actually my role has got many layers to it. My character's name is Raghav, he is someone who fights for the weak and is completely heart-driven. Whenever he does something he doesn't think about its repercussions. He can't see injustice happening to somebody.

Why did you opt for the show?

I have always taken up projects which excite me and Raghav is definitely a very interesting role. It is something which I have always wanted to do. I
would love to be remembered for my role in Saubhagyavati Bhava.

Have you watched the serial? Did you like it?

Yes, I have and I think it's a brilliant show. Both the actors are extremely talented and I love the chemistry between Karanvir and Sriti. They share a great equation and the combination is brilliant. I am looking forward to work with them.

Okay. But many people are of the opinion that the show glorifies
domestic violence. Your take on it…

See everyone has his or her way of looking at things. Unfortunately, people are giving more importance to the negatives in the show rather than the positives. Here is a case of a man who is mentally imbalanced and Saubhagyavati reflects that the problem can be solved with psychiatric help. Moreover, domestic violence is prevalent in our country and the show is just creating awareness about it.

Now, usually it has been observed that no two big actors are friends. Will it be the same with you and Karanvir?

Karanvir is popular and it's a good thing. I believe he deserves all the success and the fan following that he has got. He is doing a great job in the show. I believe as an actor what I give to the show is important and I don't find any reason for fights. We both are a part of the same show and it is our
responsibility to keep the momentum alive.

The channel (Life OK) is very new and was launched recently. So did you have any inhibition to take up a project in a lesser known GEC?

TRPs or GRPs don't bother me as long as work is good. I always give importance to content not the medium or channel.

So are you super excited?

Yes, I am very excited and just waiting for the shooting to commence. I can't wait to go to the sets.

Now, let's talk about your last show Dharampatni. It was a high-profile show but went off air within months of its launch. Are you disappointed?

Different people said different things about Dharampatni. Many said that it was not handled and treated well but I still consider it as one of my best works, irrespective of its final outcome. Yes, it is true that it was short-lived. People say I have a huge fan base, but no matter how popular you are, in the end it is the content of the show which matters. I worked extremely hard in Dharampatni and also Tere Liye but the sad part is that both the shows couldn't complete its desired journey.

What did you do in your break time?

I enjoyed the time to the fullest. I completed all my pending work. I spent some lovely time with my family and my dog. It was an awesome feeling to be with my loved ones all the time and now that I will start shooting, I wish that I can spend those moments on sets too (laughs).

On a personal note, you have always been linked to your co-stars, be it Aditi Gupta, Anupriya Kapoor or Aasiya Kazi. Are you the lover boy of the TV industry?

(Laughs) What should I comment on this. I have nothing left to talk on this topic. Media has always cooked up imaginary stories about me. And in the future, I think I will be linked to a girl who will not be alive or will be imaginary (laughs).

Finally, any message for your fans?

I would like to thank them for loving me continuously. I know you guys are waiting desperately to see me back on screen. So now you can watch me in Saubhagyavati Bhava.

Harshad Chopra:

He has recently entered Life OK's Saubhagyavati Bhav as the second lead or we should better say a hard to beat competition to Viraj Dobriyal aka Karanvir Bohra. Harshad Chopra, who so far has essayed quite different roles maintaining his ideal lover boy looks, has opted for a completely different look for Saubhagyavati Bhav. Though it's been hardly a couple of days that his character has made way into the story line but the response he has bagged for it is simply mind-blowing. FromKis Desh Mein Hai Dil Mera's Prem to Tere Liye's Anurag and now the sturdy Raghav of SB, Harshad is sure to make fans go gaga over his stupendous charm!

That television in India is no longer 'small screen' is a fact that's almost accepted. So it comes as no surprise when some soapbox characters assume larger than life proportions and become part of the viewers' lives. In fact, the viewer connects so strongly to the character that the actor playing that role becomes incidental. The boundary lines merge and when the actor stops being himself/herself and becomes the character is sometimes difficult to say. Prime time television shows can boast of some truly memorable characters who have and continue to hold a special place in viewers' hearts. Here's a quick look at the top 10 all time top favourite male characters who've made the viewers smile, made hearts beat faster everytime they've walked into the screen and looked at their audiences.

Shaktimaan (played by Mukesh Khanna) in Shaktimaan: Indian telly's first superhero who inspired an entire generation of kids, often making them take on daredevil acts) and not so young to watch his various capers to save the world from evil. If f he was a poor copy of Superman, then no one noticed really, because he had the audiences hooked in an age when TRPs didn't dictate viewership patterns!

Karamchand (played by Pankaj Kapoor) of Karamchand: A televised copy of Agatha Christie's Hercules Poirot, Pankaj Kapoor was the bumbling, carrot-chewing private eye whose impassive face was deceptive, but his mind razor sharp. Okay, he had no kick ass scenes, but here was the first thriller series with a comic touch that made Kapoor immensely popular, especially with his famous oneliner, Shut up Kitty! It's another matter that when the show was revived with a fresh starcast and an older Kapoor, it had no takers.. Magic can't be recreated.

Mihir Virani (played by Amarr Upadhyay) of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi: Yes, Mihir was truly the first hero who sent the nation (the televiewing part of it) in a tizzy when he 'died'. Amar Upadhyay became TV's biggest star there after, and after zillions of frantic fanmails later when he returned from the dead, the audiences sent prayers to the divine and Ekta Kapoor. The ideal son, doting husband and charming lover, Mihir was a fave for a year, until his character was played by two other stars. But neither could take it to the highs that Amarr had done.

Sujal Grewal (played by Rajeev Khandelwal) of Kahin To Hoga: Tall, dark handsome and rich. Sujal Grewal was the first Mills & Boonish hero who stole hearts with a hint of a smile. Rajeev Khandelwal became the first telly heartthrob of thousands of nubile hearts. Even though it was aired at a late night band (11 pm), Sujal became a household favourite almost instantly. Or rather Rajeev made him one, because once he quit the show, the replacement actor got reduced to being just a screen name!

Ranveer Sisdodia (played by Karan Wahi) of Remix: High school boys don't usually have an entire show dedicated to them. But Ranveer Sisodia was the first teenage heartthrob to find space on prime time TV for himself and built a fanbase that was enviable. Mint fresh good looks and a cute smile gave Remix great viewership, even on a niche channel like Star One.

Gattu (played by Deven Bhojani) of Baa Bahu Aur Baby: Well, he wasn't really heartthrob material, but Deven Bhojani as the affable, chubby, childlike Gattu made a firm place for himself in people's hearts. He made people smile through their tears and for a little while even a comedy series had audiences! Pity the second season of the show couldn't whip up enough TRPs despite Gattu's charm.

Armaan Mallik (played by Karan Singh Grover) of Dill Mill Gayye: The dimpled dil ka doctor was an instant hit when he flaunted his basketball playing skills in a medical show. Karan's countless shower scenes, a knowing twinkle in his eyes, fab abs, the ability to hold his co-stars in his arms, and a smile to die for made him a huge teenage icon in 2007 and kept the show on top on the channel it aired on. Even one and half year after the show's off air, there are demands for a second season with Karan Singh Grover in lead of course!

Prem Joneja (played by Harshad Chopra) of Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil: Harshad Chopra as the tycoon with a heart was just what made Prem Joneja, the perfect husband, son and brother material on screen.

Maan Singh Khurana (played by Gurmeet Chaudhry) of Geet Hui Sabse Parayi: After playing Lord Ram, Gurmeet hit the jackpot when he signed in as Maan Singh Khurana, the unsmiling biz tycoon who finds love in the arms of a bubbly teenager. The fiery on screen rapport that Gurmeet shared with his co-star Dhrasti Dhami made him telly's favourite hottie and his kick-boxing scenes and the ability to catch the falling heroine in his arms made him very popular.

Arnav Singh Raizada (played by Barun Sobti) of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?: He's prime time TV's first anti-hero who's got everything that makes him the ultimate hero. The perpetually angry, Bluetooth bearing Harvard returned tycoon who doesn't have a heart is completely smitten with a spunky beauty from Lucknow. Barun might not have been first choice for the role, but he has taken the role and the show to new TRP highs and has ensured that he's inching closer to the TV numero uno tag. As for Arnav, he's the kind of guy, whose totally droorl worthy even when he's sporting a dirty ganji and lies helpless in the baddies' den!

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, whose debut film "Kai Po Che!" is yet to release, says he might be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next project after "Ramleela".

Asked if rumours about him working with Bhansali are true, Sushant told IANS: "May be yes. It is in the very initial stage and it is very inappropriate to talk about it right now. But yes, he is very fond of me and I am his huge fan. Maybe it (the movie) might come after 'Ramleela'. I will work with him soon."

Bhansali was a surprise visitor at Sushant's birthday party recently.

Says Sushant: "I was very high (on alcohol) when he turned up for my party and I had no clue that he is coming. That is the most pleasurable gift I had in 26 years of my life."

The actor, who also aspires to be a director eventually, says he would like to assist Bhansali in his films someday.

"If he allows me, I would surely want to assist him. He is one of the ace filmmakers in Bollywood. I might also work with him as an actor also soon. Let us see how things fall in place," said Sushant, who won praise through small screen show "Pavitra Rishta".

~Retro Reel With The Eternal Love Birds Prem Heer~

Posted By Surya.Ravi On January 14, 2013 @ 2:00 pm In RETRO REEL | No comments

[1]Balaji Telefilms is indeed very much popular for giving its audiences some striking, hit pairs on the small screen. There was a time when the pairs that the production house created turned into gold and immense fan following was received by the on-screen couples. One such pair which was Balaji Telefilm's baby was Prem and Heer's pair. Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil was produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, aired on Star Plus from March 3, 2008 to February 5, 2010. The lead protagonists of the show were Harshad Chopra and Aditi Gupta portraying the characters of Prem Juneja and Heer Maan respectively. The story was like a breath of fresh air and Preem Heer's pair sweeped the viewers of their feet and one could not help but fall in love with Prem and Heer. Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil showcased Prem Heer's undying, unconditional, irrevocable love for each other. There were many tragedies and misunderstandings created between Prem and Heer but they say true love always finds the heart that beats for him or her. The same happened with Prem Heer's love story, though their were people who did not want them together, who created misconceptions in their relationship too but Prem and Heer always found their way back to each other and a way back in each other's lives. It was as though Prem and Heer's lives were inter-linked and connected with the bond of love.

Prem, Heer's love story witnessed many ups and downs. Whether it was Prem going to tie the knot with another or whether it was Prem being shown dead in the show. Whether it was someone from Prem's family who did not want them together or if it was a leap and separation just like any other Balaji camp show. But Prem Heer's love always won triumphing over all the evil eye and evils said and done. The fan-following for this particular pair was very strong back then and even today Harshad and Aditi's fans want these two actors to be paired together as the leads in a show. Prem Heer were called as 'PreMeer' by their admirers. This pair generated the feel and aura of romance on-screen and the audiences lived, smiled, laughed, cried along with Prem and Heer.

Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil saw a big twist when Prem Juneja's character was killed in the show. It was always a known fact that the character of Prem Juneja played by Harshad Chopra would be killed and Heer (Aditi Gupta) would end up marrying her brother-in-law Preet (Sushant Singh Rajput). At that time it was rather expected by the audience that Prem's character will not be killed as his character and 'Premeer's' pair was extremely loved and popular on the small screen. However, the character of Prem Juneja was killed. Fans protested, petitions were drawn, demands were made and finally Harshad was brought back in the show in full style. Once again making the love story of Prem and Heer come alive. Prem Heer's love story was one of a kind. The love story of a responsible guy and a sensible girl. Their story went through umpteen number of phases, but at the end of every phase it was Prem Heer's relationship which withstood the storm and continued to stand together against everything and anything. The story of Kis Desh Mein hai Mera Dil ended with Prem and Heer being together along with their daughter Chahat(Muskaan Uppal). Prem Heer's bond and love surely made a hard hitting impact and is unforgettable.

Prem and Heer's love story had and has the capability to take one on a dream ride of love. Their love story is still adored and cherished among one of the most remembered on-screen love stories on-screen. They are truly eternal and one cannot forget them. There is a famous phrase which goes like this 'Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind', but in the case of Prem and Heer, their love story and aura of romance they added on-screen is still remembered.

Actors Harshad Chopra and Aditi Gupta portrayed the characters with such perfection that the audiences were left in a daze and one could not help but fall in love with Prem, Heer and their love story..

The fans of the on-screen couple hope that Harshad and Aditi are paired again in another show. We are not sure if this will happen. But we wish the fans good luck and also we would like to convey our good wishes to the actors future endeavors!!!!

'Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil' 4th Anniversary special..show ended but is still fresh in everyone's memories!!

'Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil' (3rd March, 2008 to 5th February, 2010) was a beautiful
romantic story with touchy screenplay, marvelous performance and amazing
cinematography. Harshad Chopra and Additi Gupta's chemistry created waves onscreen and added icing on the cake.

Ekta Kapoor..how can I forgot to mention her name here, she was captain of the ship..Hats
Off to her!!

Show ended...years passed, but Prem-Heer are still alive in the hearts of fans. According
to them Harshiti(name given by fans to their beloved Harshad and Additi's jodi) is immortal
and will always stay alive in audiences' hearts.

3rd March is not just a date for the fans of 'Kis Desh..', for them it's a day to rejoice, as it
marks the anniversary of their favorite show. Before this special occasion, I caught up with
Heer(Additi Gupta) and Prem(Harshad Chopra) and here are they sharing their sweetest of
memories again.

HARSHAD CHOPRA is one of the most popular face in Telly world and has immense
popularity amongst the females. Chocolate faced actor is all set to return to the
fascinating world of glamour and glitz with "Dil Se Di Dua Saubhagyavati Bhava"

Kisdesians almost forced me to take your interview on 4th Anniversary of the show. They
are all set to rejoice that special day in their own way.

Harshad: I was not surprised, when you told me about fans are planning to celebrate 4th
Anniversary of 'Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil'. As a artist it's the biggest achievement for
me that people still appreciate and remember my character. I don't have words to explain my feelings.

Do you remember the episode in which Prem's entry was aired?

Harshad: Off course I do remember, how I can forget the date. I always remember the dates
on which my entry is aired. Prem entered on 12th March, I also remember the year(laughs).

Are you and Additi at loggerheads?

Harshad: There's no truth in that rumor at all. It's all rubbish. We are good friends.
Then why you are not giving joint interviews with Additi?

Harshad: Why will I have any problem? Why would I say no for joint interview with Additi?
Why would I destroy what I earned in years with my own hands?
You will surely get it, whenever time permits. While she was free I was busy with
Dharampatni, and when now I am free and she is shooting round the clock for her show

I am sure Harshiti(Harshad-Additi) fans will go weak in the knees, when they see you
back together. Agree?

Harshad: Indeed, Additi and Harshad coming together is a rare event, I want to cherish that
moment and desperately craving for it.

The ravishing and adorable ADDITI GUPTA is currently doing 'Zindagi Kahey-Smile
Please'. You can't help but smile when you meet her, she always has a blush to her
cheeks, carries a charming smile and has a jovial voice.

Guess why 3rd March is special?

Additi: I know I know..it was the day when my first show 'Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil', went on air.

Kisdesians almost forced me to take your interview on 4th Anniversary of the show. They are all set to rejoice that special day in their own way.

Additi: Awww...so sweet of them. They will always be precious to me. I know that they will
for sure celebrate this occasion. It's a sweetest gesture from our fans. The show went off-air
but there's still a lot of love for us is floating in the air.

Do you remember your entry sequence?

Additi: OMG it was the weirdest entry ever. I shot my first scene with Virendra Saxena sir
and Gary sir was directing it. My dialogue was 'Babuji Lassi'. It was my first shot; I thought
it's very easy to act. I was little bit afraid because I didn't know anything about acting.
Acting ka 'A' bhi nahi pata tha."

Go ahead..

Additi: I smiled and said 'babuji lassi', After that I had taken a deep breath and thought my
job is done. Later I came to know that every scene is picturised from different angles.
'babuji lassi..babuji lassi..babuji lassi' I don't even remember how many times I said these
two words.

For you 'Kis Desh..' is?

Additi: It's a part of my life which I don't want to forget. It was the time which will stay in inverted comma's throughout my life.

Are you and Harshad at loggerheads?

Additi: It's better to remain silent, so no comments. Next question please.

Joint interview with Harshad is possible or not?

Additi: I know fans are demanding and spamming here and there for joint interview. I just
want to say I am always approachable for separate interview. Joint interview is a bit tough.
I am really sorry if I disappoint my fans, I hope I can make them understand.

actress tasneem sheikh

Known for her role as Mohini in "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", actressTasneem Sheikh is itching to get back on television and is waiting for something interesting to come her way.

The actress took a four-year hiatus when her daughter was born.

"I will be back soon. I have got many offers but couldn't take it up as they didn't suit me. I am looking for something interesting enough for me to leave my daughter and come on the set," she told IANS.

She was last seen in "Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil" as Daljeet Maan.

Tasneem was offered a role in the recent show "Anamika" too, but didn't take it, as it involved a lot of night shoots.

"I was in love with the character but couldn't take it up as it involved a lot of night shoots, which I knew I wouldn't be able to manage with my daughter. Then it is not fair to take something up which you can't fulfill," she said.

The actress said there is no joy in the world like motherhood but at the same time it is a huge responsibility too.

"Earlier when I was working, I used to be busy, but still had a personal life. But motherhood is a full time job. I like to spend all my time with my daughter," she said.

During her sabbatical, Tasneem took up oil painting and has even held an exhibition recently.
