CHAPTER 16
Gaurav opened the main door of Claire's house. There was Preet, standing in a very nervous way and holding a bouquet of colourful Orchids. Meher loved Orchids so how could he forget to bring them for his proposal. Gaurav smiled brightly seeing Preet at the door and suddenly Claire came from inside and waved hi to Preet in a very excited way.
Gaurav: Shhh Clairu! Meher will hear you. Let Preet come inside silently.
Claire: Oh yes sorry. Come Preet don't worry, Meher will say a yes.
Preet: Hmm, so Ash informed you two, right?
Gaurav: Yeah she called me. But now be prepared for the best moment of both of your lives. Meher has gone into Claire's bedroom to tie up her hair before starting to make dinner. So go and grab the chance.
Claire: All the best Preeto. *Showing thumbs up*
Preet: Hehe. *Being nervous* Yeah alright. Thanks to both of you.
Saying this, Preet headed towards the bedroom of Claire's.
Claire's bedroom
In front of the dressing table, Meher was searching for her hair band which she had kept in one of the accessory boxes of Claire's. But she could not recall which box it was.
Meher: I think I was too drowned in Preet's thoughts that I did not notice in which one I am putting the band in. Meher, you are too much. You have to forget Preet.
Preet: Why do you have to forget me Meher?
Meher was shocked to hear Preet's voice. She looked in the mirror of the dressing table and saw Preet standing at the door. Preet's chances of hearing everything which she had said just before few seconds made her nervous like no other thing.
Meher: Pre..Preet?! When did you come?
Preet: Just now Meher and found out that you were trying not to miss me. But I think you failed miserably. *Smiling face *
Meher: No, umm noth..nothing like that Preet. Did you hear everything I said? *Stammering*
Preet: Yeah I think almost everything if not everything.
Meher: Uh, see Preet, I did not mean to hurt you by anything. But the incident of last night was really very weird for me and I needed some space. Yeah I was tensed about you the whole day but I could not really face you so I had to leave. I hope you are not angry with me, please understand. *Looking down*
Preet: Come here Meher, sit on the bed first. Let me sit beside you too. Now look at me Meher. Look. *Holds Meher by her shoulders*
Meher looked at Preet.
Meher: I am sorry Preet.
Preet: Hey! Why are you even saying sorry for? You did not do anything wrong. I can totally understand Meher. Whatever happened last night between us was awkward for me as well. But actually I thought that I would sort out the issue in the morning with you. I am sorry Meher. Whatever happened, it was none of our fault I guess. We were just a bit lost. Still I am sorry. But I feel that there are more issues with the matter? Can you please share Meher if there is any?
Meher: Preet, you are my sister's brother-in-law. We are living in abroad and that too in a same building. I have to be careful with some matters because the reputation of my parent's and the life of my sister are on the stake here. I am not saying, you or your family will do any such cheap activities but the people around can. I just don't want to create any problem in Heer didi's life or put down my parent's reputation. After last night, I had so many things going on in head that I had to leave my apartment for some days. I thought I would explain this later to you. Preet, I don't want to lose my closest friend too. You know that you mean a lot to me and I don't want to hurt you too. Please don't break our friendship. *Almost about to cry*
Preet: Seriously Meher?! Have you gone nuts? Why would I break our friendship? I also can't afford to lose you, I mean my closest friend. But as far as the matter of what will people say, don't worry about it Meher. In fact, who is here to see us even? Still I can understand you. Don't worry, you have trust on your childhood best friend, right?
Meher: Hmm Preet. *Starts crying*
Preet: Arreh Meher, why are you crying now? Trust me, everything is fine. Please don't cry and please let us go back to our building. Nothing like yesterday will happen again. *Wipes Meher's tears away*
Meher: Thank you Preet. I will come home but tomorrow not tonight. Because Claire has already called Gaurav for dinner and she was so excited for my sleepover so I can't break her heart like this.
Preet: Hmm, I think then I can stay for the dinner too. I haven't eaten anything much filling in the whole day. By the way, these flowers are for you. You love Orchids right? *Giving the bouquet to Meher*
Meher: Yeah I certainly do. Thank you so much Preet. *Smiles broadly* But wait what?! What did you do the whole day? You did not order anything from outside?
Preet: Erm, no. Was too lazy in the morning so had an apple and a glass of orange juice. Then, actually I tried making lunch. Started trying with the omellete but failed again. Then being frustrated had some biscuits for lunch. I blame you for this so now you will cook me some good dinner tonight.
Meher: Preet, you are impossible. *Makes an irritated face*
Preet: Yeah I know that. *Laughs* Now go and wash your face. I am waiting for you in the drawing room with GR and Clairu.
Meher: Okay Preet.
In the drawing room
Claire and Gaurav were waiting impatiently for the two love birds to come out. Seeing Preet coming out they became very excited and stood up.
Preet: Okay guys, before you jump on me with excitement or anything, I want to make it clear that I did not propose her.
Gaurav: What?! But why Preet?!
Claire: Yes why?!
Preet: Listen guys, Meher has gone to the bathroom to freshen up her face because she was crying. Let me explain you quickly what happened inside. *Tells everything to them* See, I don't want to rush the things for Meher. I want things to go slowly and smoothly. PB and Heer bhabi already know about my feelings and they have given their consent but I really need to know what Meher's father and mother will think about it too. If they will have some issue with our relationship, then I would like to clear it first with them and propose to Meher. I know Meher loves me, her eyes told it all but I don't want to make anything difficult for her.
Claire: Yeah I think Preet is right. But how will you get to know about her parent's view?
Preet: Leave that on me. I will think of a way.
Gaurav: Okay Preet, whatever you do we both will be with you.
Meher: Hello everyone. I am back.
Preet: Oh hi! So are you in a good mood now?
Meher: Yes. But now let me run to the kitchen. You know what guys? Preet didn't have any proper meal today.
Claire: Let me help you Meher. I am coming too.
Preet: But ladies please wait. I have a great idea. Let us order pizza for tonight and watch movie. This will be fun.
Gaurav: Great idea Preet. After the dinner and the movie, I think I would like to do a sleepover at your place for gaming. What say?
Preet: Cool! Totally nice. Let the girls have their good time and we can have our good time.
Meher: But Preet, you wanted me to cook for you and I actually want to cook for you too.
Preet: Meher, I think you can cook for me tomorrow in your apartment or mine wherever you want. But tonight we all will enjoy only, okay?
Claire: So Meher is going back tomorrow huh? Fight ended and Meher again going back to her fanboy.
Preet: Right you are. By the way, GR I think we should order the food now. Oh let us not forget to order the cokes too.
Gaurav: I am making the order right now. So, no worries.
Meher: Wow, so all of you want pizza and movie. But still I will make some quick pakodas (fritters) now because the pizzas will take at least 30 minutes to reach and Preet needs to eat something right now.
Preet: But Meher you don't need to.
Meher: No ifs and buts Preet. Clairu, can you please lend me a hand? Then it will be super quick.
Claire: Sure, coming right away.
Movie time at night
Meher: I don't know why on earth you guys decided to go horror tonight.
Claire: But Meher this is fun. I am watching it for the 3
rd time.
Graurav: Yes, I was so waiting to watch this movie.
Preet: Yeah this movie is a good movie to watch. This is getting scary.
Meher: I know this is getting scary. This is why I am not feeling good.
Claire: Are you getting scared?
Preet: Hahaha Meher is a scared kid.
Gaurav: Preet?! You are laughing?! Strange. I thought you were scared of ghosts too.
Preet: Who told you that?
Gaurav: Umm, Ash told me once.
Preet: Hmm, so I think Ash and GR are getting very friendly these days. *Teasing voice*
Both the girls gave Gaurav teasing looks on hearing Preet's words.
Gaurav: Can we please focus on the movie?
Meher: Haha surely we can but Preet are you actually scared of ghosts too?
Preet: Well, not really. I mean, I was when I was a kid and a teenager but now not anymore.
After a while, Preet held Meher's hand tightly because she was sitting beside him and started trembling.
Meher: Preet?! *Surprised* Why are you trembling? Are you okay?
Claire: I think Preet is back to his childhood or teenage. *Laughs*
Preet: Yeah crack jokes as much as you want but this movie is surely too scary.
Gaurav: Preet's era of telling lies about his guts came to an end. *Laughs too*
Meher: Don't worry Preet, I am with you. I don't like horror stuff too.
Preet: I don't know why I agreed with GR and Clairu to watch this movie.
Just then the electricity went out.
Meher: Aaa Preet! *Screams and holds Preet tightly*
Preet: Meher! *Screams too*
Claire: Chill guys. I think the electricity board of my apartment is again giving problems. I will go and check.
Gaurav: Let me come and help you Claire.
Preet: I am coming too.
Meher: Me too. I can't stay alone.
Gaurav: Both of you stay here. We don't want to hear screams while fixing the problem of the electricity board, right Claire?
Claire: Yes exactly. Both of you, please go to the balcony, there you will get lights from the surroundings. Stay there together and we will be back soon.
Preet: Erm, okay.
Meher nodded positively quietly and headed towards the balcony with Preet.
In the balcony
Preet was staring at the lights of the city as Claire's apartment was on the 19
th floor and Meher was busy bitting her nails because she was scared.
Meher: Preet, I don't know why but I feel someone is around.
Preet: Wh..wh..what?! *Scared* Meher stop over thinking. This will only cause fear. Look at the city lights, they look wonderful.
Meher: I just can't look at anything and stay still. I need to divert my mind.
Preet: Umm okay. Let us play a game.
Meher: What game?
Preet: Let us look at each other without blinking. The person who blinks first, loses the game. Okay?
Meher: Okay.
They started the game. Both of them were lost in their eyes at first but after a while Meher looked down making a scared face.
Meher: Why are you staring at me and smiling Preet? This feels scary. You are not a ghost, are you?
Preet: What?! Are you kidding Meher?! I was just trying to be a bit roma...I mean dramatic so that you blink but I think you are too scared to play this game.
Meher: Yeah maybe.
Preet: I don't know why they are taking so long. Let us go and check.
Meher: I think you are right.
But before they could cross the drawing room, the electricity came back.
Preet: Phew! The electricity is back.
Gaurav: So are we. The fuse had some issues.
Both Preet and Meher almost jumped out of fear on seeing Gaurav and Claire suddenly and hearing Gaurav's voice.
Claire: Hahaha, Meher and Preet what do we do with you guys? So, want to continue watching the horror movie? *Tries to control her laugh*
Meher: I think we better not. Let us watch another good movie and finish the pizzas and cokes.
Gaurav: Okay okay, no problem.
Preet: I do what everyone agrees to do.
Gaurav: Preet, you better don't even say anything dude. Your face is clearly saying what you want.
Preet: Someday our day will also come. Then we will see you both, right Meher?
Meher: Yes Preet!
Claire: Okay let choose something else.
Preet: Guys, give me a moment. Viren is calling me.
Preet picked up the call, talked for a bit and cut the call while smiling.
Meher: What happened Preet? Is someone coming to your place?
Preet: Yeah, Viren is coming at my place day after tomorrow.
Meher: Wow, that is great. But suddenly? That too on week days?
Preet: He has to miss classes for 2 days because some emergency has appeared regarding his father's business. He needs to be in Melbourne for two days regarding that.
Meher: Oh okay.
Both Preet and Meher looked very happy on the news of Viren's visit but the other two people sitting in that room were not happy at all.
